Iran says blogger may have died as a result of "shock": report

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Thursday a blogger who died while in police custody may have lost his life as a result of a form of shock, the official IRNA news agency reported, adding that investigations were not yet concluded.

In a case that has sparked international outrage, 35-year-old Sattar Beheshti who wrote a blog critical of the government was arrested on October 30 after receiving death threats and died some days later, having complained of being tortured.

Under increasing pressure at home and abroad for an investigation, Iran's parliament said it had formed a committee to examine the case and the judiciary said it would deal "quickly and decisively" with those responsible.

"In its latest report, the seven-member medical committee says ... it is not possible to determine the exact cause of death," IRNA quoted Tehran prosecutor's office as saying in a statement.

"But the most likely cause leading to death may be shock," the statement said, adding that excessive psychological stress could have caused the shock.

Iranian authorities arrested seven people suspected of involvement in the death of Beheshti and a judiciary official said a forensic examination had found bruises on five parts of the blogger's body.

The statement on Thursday said investigation was still underway and the results would be made public.

The Beheshti case has renewed international concerns about human rights in Iran. In October, the European Parliament awarded its human rights prize to Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer who, opposition websites report, is on hunger strike in prison.

Observatory: Grasshoppers Adapt Their Love Songs to Overcome Roadside Noise

Grasshoppers that live near highways change their tune to overcome roadside noise, a new study reports.

Male bow-winged grasshoppers produce their song, which serves as a mating call, by rubbing a toothed file on their hind legs against a protruding vein on their front wings. These songs are produced with low- and high-frequency components.

Grasshoppers living in noisy environments had higher-frequency components in the low-frequency portion of their songs, said Ulrike Lampe, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Bielefeld in Germany and one of the study?s authors. This makes sense because road noises can mask the grasshoppers? signals at the lower frequency, Ms. Lampe said.

She and her colleagues studied the insects in a laboratory environment and exposed males to females to encourage them to sing. They recorded more than 1,000 songs and found that even in a quiet laboratory setting, males collected from roadside habitats produced significantly different songs.

?So we are relatively sure that this is a long-term effect,? said Ms. Lampe. ?It could be a genetic difference, or it may occur during larvae development.?

Although the grasshoppers are not an endangered species and seem well adapted to the sounds of traffic, noise caused by humans may be affecting other insects in negative ways, Ms. Lampe said. Such noise has previously been shown to affect the acoustic communication of birds, frogs and mammals.

The study appears in the journal Functional Ecology.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 22, 2012

A report in the Observatory column on Tuesday about grasshoppers? adapting their songs to account for roadside noise referred incorrectly, in some instances, to the insects in which the phenomenon was observed. They were bow-winged grasshoppers, not crickets.

Former pitcher Pastore hurt in Calif. crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Former major league baseball pitcher-turned-Christian radio personality Frank Pastore has been critically injured in a freeway motorcycle crash.

Pastore was a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds from 1979 until 1985 and for the Minnesota Twins in 1986.

The California Highway Patrol says a car collided with Pastore's motorcycle and he was ejected on Interstate 210 in Duarte, about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. He was found unconscious on the freeway Monday night.

Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center spokeswoman Rosa Saca says the 55-year-old Pastore remains in critical condition Wednesday.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune (http://bit.ly/TYlh8x) says Pastore was on his way home from work at radio station KKLA at the time of the crash.

A statement on the KKLA website asks people to keep him in their prayers.

Practical, protective foot health steps for people with diabetes ...

(BPT) - Healthy feet are essential for overall good health, no matter your age, fitness level or physical challenges. For people with diabetes, however, taking care of their feet is especially vital. More than 60 percent of all non-traumatic lower-limb amputations worldwide are related to complications from the disease, according to the American Diabetes Association.

A recent study by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) indicates Hispanics with diabetes are particularly in danger since more than 90 percent of those with the disease or at risk for it have never seen a podiatrist as part of their health care.

?Regardless of ethnicity, foot ulcers and infections are the leading cause of hospitalization among people with diabetes, but most of those problems are largely preventable,? says Dr. Joseph Caporusso, a podiatrist and president of the APMA. It?s important for those with the disease to ?knock their socks off? and receive regular foot exams by today?s podiatrists.?

While ulcers ? open sores on the foot ? are the most common diabetes-related foot problem, several others are also serious and prevalent, including neuropathy, skin changes, calluses, poor circulation and infection. The nerve damage that diabetes causes may mean a person with an ulcer or injury may be unaware of it until it becomes infected. Infection can lead to partial or full amputation of the foot or lower leg.

The good news is, regular care from a podiatrist can help reduce amputation rates between 45 and 85 percent, the APMA says.

People with diabetes need to inspect their feet daily and be vigilant for warning signs of ulcers, including irritation, redness, cracked or dry skin (especially around the heels) or drainage on their socks.

Although ulcers can occur anywhere on the foot or ankle, they are typically found on pressure points on the foot, like the ball of the foot or bottom of the big toe. If you discover an ulcer or have any symptoms, see a podiatrist immediately. In many cases, the foot can be saved with early treatment.

In addition to examining your feet every day, and keeping your blood glucose in your target range, make sure to follow these foot health tips:

* Discuss your diabetes and the risks with your family. Diabetes can be hereditary, so talk to your family members about monitoring blood sugar and foot health.

* Never go barefoot. Always protect your feet with the proper footwear and make sure both socks and shoes are comfortable and fit well.

* Trim toenails straight across, and never cut the cuticles. Seek immediate treatment for ingrown toenails, as they can lead to serious infection.

* Keep your feet elevated while sitting.

* Wiggle toes and move your feet and ankles up and down for five minute sessions throughout the day.

?Successfully managing diabetes is a team effort, and today?s podiatrist is an integral player on that team,? Caporusso says.

Ong Bak, The Video Game | The Game Scouts

The Ong Bak franchise began in 2003, with the release of it's first movie, Ong Bak, which instantly became a huge international hit. Since then, we have seen the release of two equally as successful movies and a feature film for the franchise is now currently in the works!?

Yet what is more exciting is that the popular world of Ong Bak has made it's way into the gaming sphere with the game Ong Bak Tri, currently being developed by Immanitas Entertainment's Partner Studio HIVE in Thailand. This eagerly anticipated installment will be making it's way onto consoles, PC's and Smartphones across the globe this Winter.

The game will feature three core elements of gameplay, which includes intense fighting action, impressive free running sequences and highly cinematic quick time action events. Add to this the brilliant graphics which the game will be blessed with, thanks to the Unity Game Engine on which it will run, and we have the recipe for an awesome and hopefully great to play game.?

The minds over at Ong Bak have been working closely with the game developers to ensure that the game has an authentic Ong Bak feel to it. Even the movies main?protagonist, Tony Jaa, has lent his likeness to the game character, to give it that true Ong Bak atmosphere. With the game in final development, and the team working towards an imminent Winter release, it won't be long until we can trial out the game ourselves! The CEO at Immanitas Studios himself commented that,??we are confident that we will be able to deliver a game that will appeal to both gamers who love great action games as well as fans of the franchise?.?

What do you think of the franchise extending into games, will you be buying it? And are you excited??

Family Tree in Java

Hi guys!

I have to implement a family tree in Java. I have an input file with family relations that sounds like this :

John child Ben (-> John is the child of Ben ; Ben is the parent of John)

Ben (-> if the line contains only one string that means the person is the Root )

Tim brother Mary (-> Tim is the brother of Mary; Mary has Tim as a brother)

Sarah cousin Marshall (-> Sarah is the cousin of Marshall ; Marshall is a cousin of Sarah )

Marshall brother Sophie (-> Marshall is a brother of Sophie ; Sophie is a "sister " of Marshall )

Mary parent Sarah (->Mary is the parent of Sarah; Sarah is a child of Mary)

Sophie child Tim (->Sophie is a child of Tim;Tim is Sarah's parent)

John brother Mary (->John is a brother of Mary;Mary is a "sister" of John)

Note that I have an abstract class called Person with details of name, array of children, array of uncles, array of cousins and so on.
The fact is that there is only one ROOT; anybody has only one parent; the SEX doesn't matter.
I have to implement the following classes : Brother;Cousin;Uncle;Nephew;Parent;Child that extend the abstract class Person

A child is also a PERSON;
A parent can be someone's CHILD;
A brother is also a CHILD;
An uncle is someone's BROTHER;
A nephew is also a CHILD;
A cousing is also a NEPHEW;

Please give me some ideas.I would appreciate very much!

Ah, that new car smell: NASA technology protects spacecraft from outgassed molecular contaminants

ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2012) ? Outgassing -- the physical process that creates that oh-so-alluring new car smell -- isn't healthy for humans and, as it turns out, not particularly wholesome for sensitive satellite instruments, either. But a team of NASA engineers has created a new way to protect those instruments from its ill effects.

For some people, the best part about buying a new car is its factory-fresh new car smell, a distinctive aroma created when the chemicals and residual solvents used to manufacture dashboards, car seats, carpeting and other vehicle appointments outgas and fill the cabin. While the scent may be alluring to some, many researchers believe exposure to these gases isn't particularly healthy -- so unhealthy, in fact, that some recommend that drivers keep their new cars ventilated while driving.

Outgassed solvents, epoxies, lubricants, and other materials aren't especially wholesome for contamination-sensitive telescope mirrors, thermal-control units, high-voltage electronic boxes, cryogenic instruments, detectors and solar arrays, either. As a result, NASA engineers are always looking for new techniques to prevent these gases from adhering to instrument and spacecraft surfaces and potentially shortening their lives.

A group of technologists has created a low-cost, easy-to-apply solution, which is more effective than current techniques.

Led by Principal Investigator Sharon Straka, an engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., the team has created a new, patent-pending sprayable paint that adsorbs these gaseous molecules and stops them from affixing to instrument components. Made of zeolite, a mineral widely used in industry for water purification and other uses, and a colloidal silica binder that acts as the glue holding the coating together, the new molecular adsorber is highly permeable and porous -- attributes that trap the outgassed contaminants. Because it doesn't contain volatile organics, the material itself doesn't cause additional outgassing.

"It looks promising," Straka said. "It collects significantly more contaminants than other approaches."

Advantages Over Current Techniques

Instrument developers currently use zeolite-coated cordierite devices that look like hockey pucks. Because each individual puck has limited adsorbing capabilities, instrument designers must install multiple units, which require complex mounting hardware. "These devices are big, heavy and chunky, and take up a lot of real estate," explained Co-Principal Investigator Mark Hasegawa, of NASA Goddard.

The new paint, however, overcomes these limitations by providing a low-mass alternative. Because technicians can spray the paint directly onto surfaces, no extra mounting equipment is necessary. In addition, technicians can coat adhesive strips or tape and then place these pieces in strategic locations within an instrument, spacecraft cavity, or vacuum system, further simplifying adsorber design. "This is an easy technology to insert at a relatively low risk and cost," Hasegawa said "The benefits are significant."

Since its development, Northrop Grumman, Redondo Beach, Calif.; the European Space Agency; the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder; and Spica Technologies of Hollis, N.H., have expressed interest in using the material, Straka said. In addition, NASA's ICESat2 ATLAS project is evaluating its use, pending the outcome of additional tests, she said.

The team plans to tweak its recipe to enhance the paint's performance and experiment with different pigments, mainly black, to create a coating to absorb stray light that can overcome the light scientists actually want to gather. Straka also believes the technology could be used on the International Space Station or future space habitats to trap pollutants and odors in crew quarters.

"We're ready for primetime," Straka said. "The coating is undergoing qualification tests and is ready for infusion into flight projects or ground vacuum systems."

O'Reilly AlphaTech closes third venture fund - The ... - Fortune Finance

Foursquare backer O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures?raises $85 million.

FORTUNE --?O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures has closed its third fund with $85 million in capital commitments, Fortune has learned. The San Francisco-based firm had begun fundraising earlier this fall with a $75 million target, which was slightly above the $60 million it raised for Fund II in October 2010.

OATV is one of the original "micro-VC" firms, investing in seed-stage rounds that sit somewhere between angel investments and traditional Series A rounds. Typically it prefers to lead $1 million to $2 million seed rounds -- which are relatively large -- but also will go smaller if the opportunity is right.

Some of the firm's best-known investments are?Bitly, ChartBeat, Codecademy and Foursquare, while exited portfolio companies include?TripIt (acquired by Concur for $120m), Instructables (acquired by Autodesk) and Parakey (acquired by Facebook). OATV also is one of the few venture firms that doesn't scrub its website of failed deals -- such as Wesabe or Devver - and to briefly explain why its original investment theses didn't pan out.

OATV is managed by Bryce Roberts and Marc Jacobsen, with Tim O'Reilly/O'Reilly Media also serving as a general partner.

Are Apple And Google Going To Settle Their Patent War ???

There?s a thought out there that perhaps?Apple?and?Google?have seen the waste of enriching only the lawyers by fighting in every courtroom that will allow them time and space to do so. That instead of fattening up legal wallets so they can afford second and third spouses, perhaps coming to an agreement would be a better idea??Well, perhaps:

Apple and Google haven?t yet buried their respective hatchets over the patent litigation between them, but evidently they are willing to put them aside for a moment in the hopes of negotiating a broader peace.

A new court filing in the pair?s infringement case reveals that Apple and Google have been discussing the idea of resolving their dispute over standard essential patents via arbitration. Earlier this month, the companies exchanged proposals about hammering out some sort of global licensing agreement over standard essential patents, and both seem to agree that binding arbitration is the way to go.

It is possible to read recent filings that way, yes. Although that isn?t quite the way that I would. Advised as I am by Groklaw that that?s not quite the way?to read them:

Its offer is like you and I meet at dawn with pistols. I have a pistol. You show up with a pistol plus a machine gun. And you say, ?Hey, let?s not shoot each other with pistols. Let?s agree that neither of us can shoot the other with a pistol, and we agree to figure out a talk solution. We agree nobody can pick up a pistol while we are talking.? How stupid would I be to say, ?Sure? while you still have a machine gun that you are free to use while I now have nothing?

It?s worth reading the whole piece there. But the important, takeaway, point is as follows. Motorola (in this specific case, but also to a lesser extent Samsung in other Apple related litigation) holds standards related patents. These do indeed have to be licensed to anyone who asks, on fair and reasonable terms (FRAND to us Europeans, RAND to you Americans). That?s fine and no one is arguing about that at all. Apple does indeed have to use, thus pay for, these standards related patents: because it uses the standards themselves.?HTC?held similar standards patents as well.

Apple (and to some extent?Microsoft, in yet other, unrelated litigation) doesn?t hold standards related patents. Or at least nothing of any particular value. What Apple (and again Microsoft) does have is a number of design and utility patents. These do not have to be licensed on FRAND (or RAND) terms: they can try and charge as much as they like for them. Refuse to license them at all if they should so wish. Which is also fine and no one is arguing about it. There might well be arguments about whether certain such patents should have been granted but this basic position is not a matter of disagreement.

Standards related patents must be licensed: the question is what is a fair price? Non-standards patents do not have to be licensed and any price, however extreme, can be charged. And, largely true even if not exactly and precisely, Google through Motorola, Samsung (and HTC) hold standards patents. Apple and Microsoft hold utility and design ones.

So far so good: no real problem if everyone does want to come to a deal.

But as Groklaw points out (most astutely in my opinion) Apple?s position isn?t ?Let?s put it all on the table and sort it all out?. It is, rather, let?s neutralise your standards patents by having a standstill agreement while we still get to use our design and utility patents to cripple you:

So here Apple suggests that Motorola lay down its standard essential patents and the injunctive relief they offer, worldwide, while Apple still gets to use its weapons and shoot at will?

It?s a great negotiating technique if the other side is stupid enough to fall for it. But it?s not exactly great evidence of a desire to reach a negotiated full and final settlement, is it?

(AP) ? A group of extremist Islamist factions in Syria has rejected the country's new opposition coalition, saying in a video statement they have formed an "Islamic state" in the embattled city of Aleppo to underline their rejection of the Western-backed bloc.

The statement was a reaction to the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, formed Nov. 11 in Qatar to unify groups trying to topple the regime of President Bashar Assad. The coalition is led by a popular Muslim cleric and is seen as a way to counter the growing influence of Islamic extremists in the 20-month old revolt that has claimed more than 36,000 lives.

A militant website released the video late Sunday. In it, an unknown representative for the Islamist fighters spoke beneath a black Islamic battle flag at the end of a long table seating some 20 men. Reading from a statement, he said the group rejects the new opposition body, and declared the northern city of Aleppo, a major front where many radical groups have been fighting since the summer, an "Islamic state."

"We are the representatives of the fighting formations in Aleppo and we declare our rejection of the conspiratorial project, the so-called national alliance," the statement said. "We have unanimously agreed to urgently establish an Islamic state and to reject any foreign project." The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed, but the website it was released on carries al-Qaida and other militant statements.

The Syrian uprising started as peaceful protests in March 2011. It quickly morphed into a war that has deepened sectarian divisions in the country. Many of those trying to depose Assad are Sunni Muslims, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, followers of a Shiite offshoot sect.

Syria's political opposition has struggled to prove its relevance amid the civil war under a leadership largely made up of academics and exiled politicians. With its relaunch as a new organization earlier this month, it has taken a different tack by choosing Mouaz al-Khatib as its head. The 52-year-old cleric-turned-activist is respected by groups from across the political spectrum and has preached sectarian unity.

Speaking in in Cairo, where the 13-group alliance is now based, Al-Khatib told reporters that the Coalition will consider the concerns of Syrian factions who have not joined the new umbrella group.

"We will listen to our brothers who have not joined this alliance," al-Khatib said after a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr. "We will keep in contact with them for more cooperation in the interest of the Syrian people," al-Khatib said.

So far, France has gone the furthest in recognizing the Coalition, declaring the Doha-formed alliance as the representative of the Syrian people and accepting one of its members as the group's ambassador to Paris on Saturday.

The United States and Italy have both recognized its status as a representative, but stopped short of conferring formal diplomatic recognition. Turkey last week recognized it as "the legitimate representative" of the Syrian people.

Many Syrians, particularly those in the capital Damascus where fighting and demonstrations have been relatively light, fear the involvement of Islamic extremists in the civil war. Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for a number of devastating bombings in the capital and other cities, targeting state security institutions and military intelligence branches there.

Also on Monday, a Kurdish group has clashed with rebel units in the city of Ras al-Ayn, a Turkish official said. The infighting among rebel units comes just days after opposition fighters ousted Assad's troops from the strategic city in northeastern al-Hasaka province along the border with Turkey.

At least 24 Syrians were injured in the clashes and were brought across the border into the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar, according to an official in the Ceylanpinar mayor's office. The official said two of the injured men later died.

The official said the clashes erupted after a group of Kurds marched through Ras al-Ayn trying to hoist a flag of a Syrian Kurdish party.

He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules that bar civil servants from speaking to reporters without prior authorization.

An Associated Press video journalist in Ceylanpinar heard gunfire and occasional shelling coming from the oil-rich city that at is predominantly Kurdish.

While the Assad regime has been isolated internationally for cracking down on dissent, Iran, Russia and China have backed Damascus during the conflict.

Tehran has started building a $10 billion natural gas pipeline to Syria as part of efforts to boost Iran's energy sector that has been battered by international sanctions.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said on Monday that the 1,500-kilometer (900-mile) pipeline will pass through Iraq before reaching Syria.

Iran began construction of the first phase of the project involving a 225-kilometer (140-mile) stretch at an estimated cost of $3 billion. The Fars report said the entire project is to be completed in the second half of 2013. The deal was signed between Iran, Iraq and Syria last July.

Solid Advice When Trying To Invest In Commercial Real Estate ...

Purchasing commercial real estate requires new strategies and a different knowledge base compared to buying residential properties. Read on for a few suggestions and tips that could help you get a great deal.

When you are a new investor, it is best to focus on one type of investment at a time. Decide on one property type and educate yourself about the best way to handle it. It isn?t good to be just okay at many investments when you can be excellent at one.

A variety of kinds of commercial property real estate brokers exist. Some are full service brokers, and they work on behalf of landlords and tenants. Others are agents who represent only tenants. If you intend to rent rather than buy, retaining the services of the latter type of broker may benefit you, as tenant-only brokers know what works when representing tenants.

One way to do this is to use the internet. Either send out a monthly commercial real estate newsletter, or be active on social media related to commercial real estate. Keep your investors in the know so you can use them again on future deals.

Buy property that has more units. With more units, you will give yourself a better chance of realizing a significant profit from your property. Serious investors will not be interested by a building that has less than a dozen units.

See how your considered firm measure its results. Ask how the space needed is determined as well as the criteria they look for and their negotiation methods. It is important to know these answers before you engage them to work for you.

To ensure that you are doing business with the most suitable real estate broker, have them describe to you what a success or a failure is. Find out their criteria for deciding whether a result is good or not. Make certain that you comprehend their strategies and techniques. Then you can be sure you choose a broker who views things the same way you do.

List your real estate at a realistic price. There are many things that can impact your value greatly.

If you trying to choose between two or more potential properties, it?s good to think bigger in terms of perspective. Financing may be no more difficult for the large apartment building than the small one. Generally, this is the same situation as if you were buying something in bulk, the more you buy the cheaper the price of each unit.

Commercial Property

Know what your goals are when you are purchasing commercial property. Are you going to use it to run your business, or are you going to lease it? Be sure that you have goals that are specific and clear when you look for commercial property, as this can save you plenty of effort and time.

When choosing between two different types of commercial properties, it?s best to look at things on a bigger scale. Financing may be no more difficult for the large apartment building than the small one. Generally, this is the same situation as if you were buying something in bulk, the more you buy the cheaper the price of each unit.

Look at the surrounding neighborhood before you decide on purchasing a specific commercial property. Purchasing a property in a neighborhood that is filled with well-to-do potential clients will give you a lot better chance of becoming well-to-do yourself! Or if your services are for the less wealthy, purchase in this type of area.

At first, you may be required to spend a significant amount of time on a commercial investment. You have to look around for the right chance, and you might need to do some improvements on the property once you purchase it. However, don?t give up just because this will take time. You will reap the rewards in the near future.

When you?re in the market for commercial property, find your lender prior to making an offer on it. Consult with friends who have experience along with other investors in order to compile a list of lenders that you should consider using. Do your homework, and do business with the one that serves your needs prior to starting the wheels turning on a commercial property purchase. Taking your time to organize your paperwork will help to ensure that you get the loan.

Research the company and find out if they care about their customers? best interests before you commit to working with them. If you don?t do this, you could end up with a bad deal and lose more money as time goes on.

Develop the perception that you are an expert by beginning an online blog. You could find buyers or renters on the Internet when you employ this approach.

If you are looking for a space to house your business on a permanent basis, remember that you will need room to grow. Take into account any plans for expansion. Otherwise, you might just be back on the market in five years.

Commercial Real Estate

Search for opportunities to buy larger commercial buildings if you want to invest in commercial real estate. The reason a larger property will benefit you is that the cost per unit for maintenance is less. Increasing the number of units that require maintenance does not add much additional work, but it does considerably drop the cost per unit.

Now you have learned the basics of commercial real estate investment and a few helpful tips. Be sure to follow the advice of this article to get your best deal in commercial real estate, and continue on a successful path.

A bit of advice on More Information can make life less stressful. Therefore, it was wise to soak up as many facts as you can. Knowledge is helpful, especially when it comes to More Information . Be sure to read this often so that you will have the knowledge when you need it.

Animal Rescue In The Aftermath Of Hurricane | Dog Files

It has been a tough week here on the East Coast. Hurricane Sandy hit us hard and it?s going to be a while before we get back to normal. And I say this as someone that had no flooding and didn?t lose power. Many others in New York and New Jersey have lost their houses and their vehicles and my heart goes out to them. But I have no doubt we will be back as strong as ever. New Jersey and New York will represent soon enough!

As the creator of the Dog Files, I always have my eye on the animal angle of a news story and Hurricane Sandy is no different. After seeing how much people are doing to save and protect our animals, I feel optimistic and hopeful.

The days of telling evacuees to leave their pets behind is no more and I haven?t heard a single person on TV doubting whether or not we should be rescuing our animals and pets.

And that?s really how it should be. Animals are an integral part of our families and they deserve to be protected. After all, as anyone involved in Rescue knows, Animal Welfare IS Human Welfare.

Let?s never forget that.

Stay safe,
Kenn, Max & Remy

Behind the US gambit to seek new anti-Assad leadership in Syria

The US pulled its support from the opposition Syrian National Council, based in Paris, this week ? a signal that the Obama administration plans to put more stock in rebel forces fighting the Assad regime on the ground.

With the Obama administration giving up on the exile-heavy Syrian National Council and seeking creation of a more inclusive and representative opposition leadership, some of Syria?s rebels wondered aloud, ?What took them so long??

But the truth is that Washington has become increasingly disenchanted with the Syrian National Council, or SNC ? exasperated by infighting among leaders in the Paris-based organization even as rebels fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and local leaders stuck out the war on the ground. But it had held back from real censure in the hope the SNC would right its own ship.

That changed abruptly Wednesday, when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in effect handed the SNC a pink slip. She said the US is looking for a new set of leaders to take Syria?s helm into what the US insists is the coming post-Assad period.

?This cannot be an opposition represented by people who have many good attributes but have in many instances not been inside Syria for 20, 30, or 40 years,? Secretary Clinton said in the Croatian capital of Zagreb. ?There has to be a representation of those who are on the front lines fighting and dying today to obtain their freedom.?

From the outset of the rebellion in Syria against the Assad regime 19 months ago, the US said it was up to Syrians to choose their own leadership to fight, and eventually replace, Mr. Assad. But the Obama administration has opted now to take a more active role in the creation of a new opposition leadership body for two reasons (besides weakness and dysfunction displayed by the SNC).?

One is that the rebellion has shifted into a civil war. That has raised the profile of the fighters and rebel military leaders on the ground on the one hand, but it has also put a direct spotlight on the need for an opposition leadership that includes all of Syria?s factions and ethnic groups. Without such inclusivity, the next leadership would be at grave risk of overseeing the country?s disintegration.

The second is that the continued fighting and the breakdown of authority have opened the door to Islamist extremists, who appear to be assuming a greater role in the fight to oust Assad. Clinton was upfront about those concerns, saying, ?We also need an opposition that will be on record strongly resisting the efforts by extremists to hijack the Syrian revolution.?

Formation of this new opposition leadership, in which the SNC would play at best a minority role, is the objective of a conference set to be held in Doha, Qatar, next week. Clinton said the US had submitted ?names and organizations? of Syrians it believes should be part of any new ?leadership structure.?

Representatives of the Syrian opposition and their international supporters already tried, at similar talks in Cairo in June, to come up with a new ?leadership structure.? But that meeting degenerated into recriminations and even fistfights.

The question may now be whether, after another four months of war and more public prodding from Washington, the disparate factions fighting Assad can come together.

Canterbury businesses find ways to survive | Stuff.co.nz

MARTA STEEMAN AND TAMLYN STEWART

The impact of the earthquakes on Christchurch businesses has not been as bad as expected, a Statistics New Zealand report reveals.

The "Business demography" report released yesterday shows Christchurch's number of business sites was only 2.5 per cent lower in February this year than February last year.

The report compares the number of business locations or sites in February this year with February last year before the destructive February 22 earthquake.

Christchurch had 37,340 business sites in February last year and 36,420 in February this year. That is only 920 fewer business sites.

It's the same for the Canterbury region. The 63,470 business locations in February this year is only 960 lower than the 64,430 in February last year.

The number of employees in Christchurch was only 1600 fewer in February this year, at 184,000, than February last year. And in Canterbury there was a slight rise in the number of employees to 256,600.

But Christchurch has a lot more businesses in building and the construction industry and a lot fewer cafes, restaurants, pubs, tourism businesses and education services, the report shows.

The numbers of painting and decorating businesses rose more than a third in the year to February 2012 , the number of house building businesses increased 11 per cent and other construction businesses rose 14.5 per cent.

The number of cafes and restaurants fell 19 per cent and pubs, taverns and bars dropped 13.5 per cent.

Christchurch economist Robin Clements, of research house UBS, said he expected the impact to be a lot worse.

"That's what shocked me," Clements said.

Many businesses just got on with the job and set themselves up in all sorts of alternative locations.

It suggested the economic loss to the region was not as great as some of the "scaremongers" were suggesting.

Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said the small decrease in business sites in Christchurch was in line with feedback from membership. The region was "still in pretty good shape and well positioned to engage in the rebuild."

The report gives more insight into the flight from the CBD. It shows about 18,200 fewer employees in the CBD in February this year - nearly 40 per cent fewer - and 1975 fewer business sites (about 34 per cent down) than February last year.

The western and southern suburbs took the migration from the centre.

They had an extra 16,710 employees in February this year, a 6 per cent increase, and an extra 1250 business sites.

FAST RELOCATION KEPT QUAKE-HIT FIRMS ALIVE

Winning the race to find new premises in the western suburbs of Christchurch ensured the survival of many businesses after the February 2011 earthquake.

Hi-tech manufacturer Enatel and web development company Hairy Lemon were two of those - Enatel relocating to Wigram and Hairy Lemon to Hornby.

Enatel managing director Gary Foot said one advantage of relocating was that the business, previously spread across four separate business sites in St Asaph and Tuam streets, was now in one much larger site in Wigram.

The hi-tech manufacturer produces standby power supplies for the telecommunications industry and solar inverters which convert electricity from solar panels into electricity suitable for everyday use.

Enatel's new location is close to the airport but traffic congestion was a problem. Morning and afternoon rush hours were "just a nightmare", Foot said.

But it was something to "grin and bear" because all the activity in the area was rebuild-related.

The firm was paying higher rent than before the earthquake but that was because its premises were much larger, Foot said. "But clearly there has been a significant increase in rental as a result of the earthquake."

Before the quake, one site had been offered for $100,000 a year, on a three-year lease, Foot said. Immediately after the quake, the landlord for that site had wanted a 10-year lease for $200,000 a year.

Another tenant accepted those terms within 48 hours.

Fortunately the firm had had its eye on its Wigram site before the September quake and was able to negotiate a seven-year lease. The company spent $1 million on a new fitout.

Web development company Hairy Lemon co-founder Graham Dockrill said its relocation to Hornby had been vital.

"Finding facilities that allowed us to continue business after the event, that continuity of business was incredibly important."

However the location, fit-out and size of its Hornby office was "not ideal", with only about half the office space of their former Victoria St site.

Rent was similar to what the firm had been paying in Victoria St.

The firm is returning to the city centre and is about to sign a lease for new premises.

New tool aims to ensure software security policies reflect user needs

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Researchers from North Carolina State University and IBM Research have developed a new natural language processing tool that businesses or other customers can use to ensure that software developers have a clear idea of the security policies to be incorporated into new software products.

Specifically, the research focuses on access control policies (ACPs), which are the security requirements that software developers need to bear in mind when developing new software. For example, an ACP for a university grading program needs to allow professors to give grades to students, but should not allow students to change the grades.

"These ACPs are important, but are often buried amidst a lengthy list of other requirements that customers give to developers," says Dr. Tao Xie, an associate professor of computer science at NC State and co-author of a paper on the research. These requirements are written in "natural language," which is the conversational language that people use when talking or corresponding via the written word.

Incomplete or inaccurate ACP requirements can crop up, for example, if the customer writing the ACP requirements makes a mistake or doesn't have enough technical know-how to accurately describe a program's security needs.

A second problem is that programmers may misinterpret some ACP requirements, or overlook them entirely.

In collaboration with IBM Research, Xie's research team has developed a solution that uses a natural language processing program to extract the ACP requirements from a customer's overall list of requirements and translate it into machine-readable language that computers can understand and enforce.

After the ACPs are extracted, they can be run through Access Control Policy Tool (ACPT) -- also developed in Xie's research team in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) -- which verifies and tests the ACPs and determines whether the ACP requirements are adequate to meet the security needs of the program.

Once the ACP requirements have been translated into machine-readable language, they can also be incorporated into a policy-enforcement "engine" in the final software product -- which ensures that ACPs cannot be overlooked by programmers.

"In general, developing a program that understands natural language text is very challenging," Xie says. "However, ACP requirements in software documents usually follow a certain style, using terms such as 'cannot be edited' or 'does not have the ability to edit.' Because ACPs tend to use such a limited number of phrases, it is much easier to develop a program that effectively translates natural language texts in this context."
