LCH.Clearnet to raise 300 mln stg, Nasdaq to up stake - report

Feb 27 (Reuters) - LCH.Clearnet will raise 300 million

pounds ($454 million) through a capital raising in the coming

days that is expected to see exchange operator Nasdaq OMX Group

raise its minority stake in the trans-Atlantic clearing

house, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

LCH Clearnet is in advanced stages of finalising the

fund-raising as part of a takeover deal by the London Stock

Exchange Group, Sky News said on its website.

The LSE plans to pay 366 million euros ($479.8 million) for

60 percent of LCH, which as a clearing house makes its money by

acting as a middle man in financial trades and guaranteeing to

complete deals if one of the parties involved can't.

The deal offers the LSE diversification from its equities

base into the many debt and currency markets in which LCH

operates, but the exchange has already cut its offer price after

estimating that regulatory demands could require LCH to raise

300 million euros in additional capital this year.

The two parties last month set a deadline giving themselves

until Thursday to finalise detailed terms of a deal and Sky News

said the companies are on the brink of an agreement even though

they could still miss the deadline.

LSE Group and LCH declined to comment.

As part of the deal, yet to be finalised as of Wednesday

afternoon, Singapore Exchange operator SGX could

potentially snap up a minority shareholding, while Nasdaq was

also in talks to raise its minority stake in the business, Sky

News said.

Nasdaq declined to comment. SGX could not be reached for

comment outside regular business hours.

Keep your Feet Healthy and Happy | Best Self Magazine | Atlanta GA

By Sarah E. King

These days, we all lead demanding and active lives. In a single outing, we can run to the store, pick up the dry cleaning, spend a few hours at the office, throw in a workout, stand in line at the bank and take the dog for a walk. We are constantly on the go, and always on our feet, ready to tackle the next errand or take on the next "to-do."

But have you ever stopped to think about the intricate and biological wonder that has taken you to all those places? Your feet. Made up of 52 bones and more than 100 ligaments, tendons and muscles all working together, this crucial part of your body works hard to keep you on the move. When was the last time you took into account how much your feet affect your lifestyle, and for that matter, how much your lifestyle affects your feet?

"The foot is the most complicated part of the body, but the most neglected by most people," says Raymond Margiano, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Foot Solutions, Inc., which focuses on providing a line of shoes, arch supports and foot care accessories. "A lot of people don't understand it, but the feet are the foundation of your body, similar to the foundation of a building. Over time, you start seeing stress cracks in the foundation, and the building starts to lean. The foundation of your body is critical to your alignment; everything above your feet needs that solid support."

Margiano, who has been in the footwear and pedorthic industry for more than 20 years, is not alone in his opinion. Dr. Carl Kihm, podiatric physician and surgeon with Village Podiatry Centers, says we oftentimes take our feet for granted until we experience an ongoing problem that is painful or debilitating.

"Our feet are our foundation and they allow us to be mobile and live," Dr. Kihm says. "If the bones and joints of your foot and/or ankle are in poor condition, this can affect your posture, pace, the pressure distribution and time spent on each foot while walking, which can ultimately lead to knee, hip and back pains."

Dr. Kihm, who sees patients at Village Podiatry Center's Marietta-Kennestone and Douglasville offices, says early assessment and treatment is the optimal way to keep your feet healthy. "Do not ignore your feet. If they hurt, you should listen to your body and you should not try to deal with the pain," he says. "Consider which factors make them feel worse and avoid these."

Clearly, paying attention to your feet and what your body is telling you are the first steps in obtaining happy and healthy feet. But what are we dealing with here? And what do we do to tackle common foot problems?

The Usual Suspects

Dr. David Scott of Resurgens Orthopaedics, who specializes in foot and ankle issues as well as trauma and knee surgeries, puts foot health into simple terms. "When you don't take care of your feet, they hurt, and you don't get to do what you like to do," he says. "Take care of your feet, and you get a lifetime of foot health and wellness." However, despite the straightforward advice, 10 to 20 percent of people have some kind of recurring or chronic foot problem. Here are a few of the more common ailments:

Bunions:

A bunion is a condition where the big toe gradually dislocates, and can get more severe and painful over time. This condition is caused by the bone structure of your feet, which is hereditary. Dr. Kihm says some shoes can make the condition more painful, but shoes are not the cause of bunions.

Treatment: "Wide-toed shoes and padding may be helpful to reduce this kind of pain," Dr. Kihm says. "However, because bunions are a bone condition, sometimes, surgery is required to address and correct the bony etiology and painful deformity."

Hammertoe:

A hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes, in which the toe is bent at the middle joint. If left untreated, a hammertoe may become fixed and require surgery.

Treatment: "Everything in your body has some kind of balance, such as the bicep and the tricep in your arm," Dr. Scott says. "The hammertoe is a sort of imbalance in the toe where the first knuckle is bent up and the second knuckle gets bent down." Dr. Scott says a hammertoe can be surgically straightened by removing the knuckle and lengthening the tendons. The knuckle is then fused straight. "You have to balance all of the joints to correct the hammertoe," he says. Dr. Scott also says forefoot problems in the ball of your foot may be the result of tight calf muscles. "When your calf muscle is tight, it puts more pressure on the ball of your foot when you walk," he says. "People who experience bunions and hammertoes should have their calf muscles checked, and if tight and causing more pressure on the ball of your foot, they should be lengthened during surgery."

Corns:

Corns are pressure-induced callus formations on the toes. Dr. Kihm says each patient is assessed individually to determine why these are occurring.

Treatment: "Your podiatrist can usually trim your corn and this can allow for an immediate relief of pain," he says. "If your shoes are too tight or if you have hammertoes associated with these corns, these can be causative factors that need to be addressed to prevent the corns from returning." Padding around the toes can also reduce the pressures that create corns. However, Dr. Kihm says he cautions people with poor sensation, especially diabetic patients, not to use medicated corn pads. "These contain salicylic acid that dissolves away the corn, but can also dissolve away healthy skin and create wounds and more severe problems."

Plantar fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflamed. The bottom of the heel becomes tender and sore. Dr. Scott says there are many factors that cause plantar fasciitis. "The aging of the tendon and the stress we put on it in day-to-day life is one factor," he says. "We are also heavier than we should be, and not as athletic as we should be." Dr. Scott says while sometimes there is an event where you may injure your heel, very frequently, there is not one factor to put your finger on.

Treatment: "Given enough time, plantar fasciitis will actually go away, but you can do things to speed it up," Dr. Scott says. Maintaining a healthy body weight, stretching the upper calf muscle, wearing good footwear or anti-inflammatory medications are all possible forms of treatment. "Ninety-five percent of heel pain, however, gets better with stretching," he says.

Ingrown Nails:

An ingrown nail occurs when the side of the nail grows into the skin. When left untreated, the irritated nail can create infection. Causes include footwear that crowds the toes, not properly cutting the nail or toenail injury.

Treatment: Dr. Kihm says to prevent ingrown nails, avoid cutting your nails too short and do not cut them on a sharp curvature. If you develop an ingrown nail, see your podiatrist for treatment; an in-office procedure is oftentimes performed, which can remove the ingrown nail and prevent it from returning.

If the Shoe Fits...

Certain aches and pains can be avoided by simply paying attention to the shoes you put on your feet. Margiano says most foot problems are caused or aggravated by wearing ill-fitted shoes. "Ninety percent of people are not wearing properly fitted shoes... you want to wear shoes like the shape of your foot, with room and support for walking or running," he says. "Your foot takes the impact if you're not supporting it properly."

For women, the daily use of high-heels is a major culprit in foot pain. "Women will have five times more issues with their feet than men, and the main reason is the female tendency to wear shoes more for appearance than for comfort," Margiano says.

For a woman to avoid issues due to high-heels, Margiano suggests not wearing heels higher than 1.5 to 2 inches, as well as wearing high-heels in moderation. "You don't want to force your feet into this awkward position," he says. "Heels slam those toes into a narrow wedge, and are the leading cause for bunions and hammertoes."

But men aren't free from shoe discomfort either. According to Dr. Kihm, men are five times more likely to have a traumatic fracture of their heel bone than women. "These kinds of injuries are usually experienced when jumping or falling from a height, and since men, for example, work more frequently on roofs, this makes sense."

Dr. Scott says men also are more prone to overuse and sports-related injuries, and injuries among his male and female patients are equal. However, women still take the brunt of footwear-related pain. "I see two or three women patients for every male," he says. "Women are in for more shoe-related issues due to restrictive footwear, and I see more foot and ankle issues with women."

Flip-flops and ballet flats, which offer little arch support, are also a concern for health care professionals. Margiano says there are many foot injuries that result from the foot not being supported, like fallen arches. "Your foot, overtime, will collapse, and being flat footed puts more pressure on your ankle and knees," Margiano says. "You can purchase custom inserts for flats or heels to support the arch... a lot of things can be done for fashionable footwear. When you put in an insert, your foot feels better and feels more supported."

Dr. Kihm says there are many different reasons for fallen arches, and some may have more to do with heredity. "If this problem is noted in children, or since childhood, this typically reflects the patient's inherited bone structure of the arch of his or her feet," he says. "When this problem arises in adulthood, the cause can be the result of tendon damage and dysfunction. We commonly see this in older and overweight females, and it commonly only involves one foot at a time."

For an inherited or developed issue, Dr. Kihm suggests wearing supportive sneakers with rigid arch supports to help prevent or treat these conditions. However, when pain, fatigue or weakness is associated with fallen arches, Dr. Kihm warns that you should report for a physical exam, as these conditions may get worse with time.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Understanding the steps to take in addressing foot problems will help put you on the right track for a healthier lifestyle. And taking care of your feet can be a simple process. Dr. Scott offers this final advice:

"Keep your weight near your ideal range, pick your activities carefully. When you change activities, you should change it in a gradual way so your feet don't fracture or break. Wear comfortable shoes," he says. "Also, calf stretching and a flexibility routine are important. Those who have stayed flexible as they age tend to do better. Flexibility should be a long-term part of everyone's fitness goals."

Having the right footwear is crucial to maintaining healthy feet. But we don't think about it as much as we should. According to Dr. Kihm, the pressure on your feet exceeds your bodyweight when walking, and can reach four times your body weight when running. "We don't think about this a lot and maybe we 'put up' with our feet being sore or painful," he says. "It should not be this way and it does not need to be. Proper footwear is very important so you can support and protect your feet as they function."

The Right Support

Hiking Boots

Bubba Sloan, co-founder of High Country Outfitters, knows his way around a hiking boot. Sloan says, when it comes to footwear, making sure you have the proper fit is important. "If there was one shoe on the market that I think would fit everyone, I'd sell one shoe," he says. To find the right boot keep these tips in mind:

  • The sole: You need sturdiness in the sole of the boot so the foot stays in a stable position. Boots which cover the ankle are not meant to prevent rolling your ankle, but to protect from rocks or other abuses on the trail.
  • Socks: Merino wool lets the foot breath and doesn't cause temperatures to rise in the boot like synthetic socks.
  • Boots: A light weight, waterproof boot is a good starting point for new hikers.

Heels

For those who wear heels on a daily basis, it's no surprise to hear that high heels cause a range of foot problems.

  • Dr. Kihm: "High heels change the forces on the foot as they shift the pressure to the front of the foot. They also have a narrow toe box, which crams the toes together, and can cause corns and calluses, or make bunions more painful."
  • Dr. Scott: "It's common sense and we all know it, but we like fashion. You'd rather look good than feel good sometimes. Shoes that are wide enough for your feet, with good thick bottoms, and don't constrict the bone are ideal. Fashion footwear is tight, and doesn't fit how the human foot was made... very few people can wear high heels when they're older."

LG Optimus LTE III spotted in the wild in South Korea

Android Central

At first glance you'd be forgiven for mistaking what we see here for an LG Optimus L7, but it is in fact reportedly the latest in the Optimus LTE line -- the imaginatively titled Optimus LTE III. Spied in South Korea, the LTE III is supposedly launching sometime later this year on the country's SK Telecom network.

Like the L-Series devices, the LTE III is reported to carry some decent mid-range specs, such as a 1280x720 display, and dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 processor. Software is said to be Android 4.1.2, which is hardly a surprise given what we've seen in Barcelona this week. It also supposedly packs a decent sized 2540 mAh battery to keep things ticking along.

Will LG release this outside of its native South Korea? Possibly not, but it's a nice looking device all the same -- though the physical home button still draws its critics. It also seems to have a sweet looking flip case available for it too, similar in style to that which we saw for the Optimus G Pro at Mobile World Congress.

2 Santa Cruz, Calif., police officers shot dead

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) ? Two Santa Cruz police officers were shot and killed Tuesday while investigating a sexual assault, and a suspect was also fatally shot, authorities said.

The officers were shot around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak confirmed Tuesday evening that they died.

The shooting in the community about 60 miles south of San Francisco took place as police were investigating a report of a sexual assault, Wowak said. A suspect fired, hitting the two officers.

A suspect was shot while police were in pursuit of the shooter, the sheriff said. Authorities said that person also died.

The names and ages of the officers and the suspect have not been released.

Residents on the streets adjoining where the two shootings occurred received an automatic police call at about 3:30 p.m. warning them to stay locked inside.

About half an hour later, more than a dozen semi-automatic shots echoed down the streets in a brief shootout that killed the suspect.

Three hours later, police were going door to door in the neighborhood searching homes, garages, even closets, although the sheriff said authorities didn't know if another suspect remained at large.

Police, sheriff's deputies and FBI agents filled intersections, some with guns drawn, in what is ordinarily a quiet, residential neighborhood.

A store clerk a few buildings away from the shooting said the barrage of gunfire was "terrifying."

"We ducked. We have big desks so under the desks we went," said the clerk, who spoke on condition of anonymity and asked that her store not be identified because a suspect might still be at large and she feared for her safety.

She said she was still locked in her store a few hours after the shooting and was still scared.

Two schools were locked down during the shooting. About two hours later, the students were evacuated by bus to the County Government Center about half a mile away.

As darkness fell, helicopters and light aircraft patrolled above the neighborhood, which is about one mile from downtown Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The university of California, Santa Cruz campus is in hills about five miles away from the shooting scenes.

Santa Cruz has faced a recent spate of violence, and a rally had been scheduled for Tuesday for community leaders to speak out against shootings. But after Tuesday's gunfire, both a regularly scheduled City Council meeting and the downtown rally were canceled after teary-eyed city leaders learned of the deaths.

The surprising attacks include the killing of Pauly Silva, a 32-year-old martial arts instructor who was shot outside a popular bar and restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz on Feb. 9.

Two days later, a UC Santa Cruz student waiting at a bus stop was shot in the head during a robbery. She is recovering from her injuries.

Then on Feb. 17, a 21-year-old woman was raped and beaten on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Four days later, a Santa Cruz couple fought off two men who came in their home before dawn and threatened them with a sword.

Divisional Playoffs - Houston Texans v New England PatriotsGetty Images

When I first heard about Peter King?s report that the Patriots had signed quarterback Tom Brady to a three-year, $27 million extension, I assumed the deal was worth $27 million per year.

It?s not.? For committing to the Patriots in the 2015, 2016, and 2017 seasons, Brady gets a total of $27 million.

It appears, as explained last night, to be nothing more than an effort to reduce Brady?s cap number in 2013 and 2014, the final two years of his existing deal.? It?s hard to spread money over the years of a contract if the contract covers only two more seasons.? Come 2015, the likely reality is that a new deal will be done ? after the appearance that Brady has taken less is used to squeeze other players into doing the same thing, which the Pats did masterfully last decade.

Still, teams and agents are looking at the numbers and wonder what else could be going on.? Whispers of a side deals already have begun in league circles, even though there is (and likely will be) no proof of a wink-nod arrangement that will see Brady get compensated in other ways.

Sides deals aren?t unprecedented in pro football.? The Broncos lost a second-round pick, a third-round pick, and paid a $950,000 for violations relating to $29 million in deferred payments to John Elway and Terrell Davis during the team?s Super Bowl window of the late 1990s.? Again, there is (and likely will be) no proof of a side deal in this case.

Now that more and more teams are pressed against the salary cap and trying to finagle spending space, suspicions of side arrangements and briefcases full of cash will return to the NFL ? even if no team is ever caught or is ever guilty.

In Brady?s case, the facts as presently known raise natural red flags.? At a time when the high-water mater for quarterbacks is $20 million, the notion that Brady would commit to playing for less than half that average over a three-year window starting three seasons from now makes no sense.

At a minimum, agent Don Yee has provided his competitors with more than enough ammunition for the inherently cutthroat game of chasing new clients.? At a maximum, teams and agents will probe for something/anything to explain why Tom Brady was willing to sign a contract that pays him so much less than he?ll be worth starting two years from now.

Maybe, in the end, the explanation is that, given his wife?s obscene earnings, he?s willing to take a lot less money in order to help that Pats stack the deck for another Super Bowl run or two.

Report: Saudis may drop screen for women advisers

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? A Saudi newspaper says officials may consider dropping plans for a barrier separating men and the newly appointed women in the country's top advisory body.

The reports follow the swearing-in ceremony Sunday for the first women in the ultraconservative kingdom's Shura Council. There was no barrier during the event as the 30 women sat on one side of the chamber and the 130 men on the other.

Saudi Arabia's strict Islamic codes sharply restrict mixing between genders.

The pro-government Al-Watan newspaper reported Monday that the original proposal for a barrier in the Shura chamber now could be reconsidered.

In 2011, King Abdullah said women can vote and run as candidates in the next municipal elections in 2015. The kingdom's women are still banned from driving and face many other restrictions.

South Africa: will Pistorius train while on bail?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius on Monday informed South African authorities that he wants to resume athletic training while on bail for the murder case against him, a government official said.

A spokeswoman for the Olympic runner, however, denied that he was making immediate plans to return to the track while awaiting trial for the Feb. 14 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

"Absolutely not," said spokeswoman Janine Hills. "He is currently in mourning and his focus is not on his sports."

The double-amputee Paralympian discussed bail terms with his probation officer and a correctional official at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court in the capital, according to correctional officials. The guidelines will determine his daily routine until his next court appearance on June 4.

"It's his wish to continue to practice," James Smalberger, chief deputy commissioner of the department of correctional services, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Smalberger said the issue came up because authorities need to know his movements whenever he leaves the home where he is staying.

The timing of any resumption of training was uncertain.

Pistorius' longtime coach, Ampie Louw, declined to comment on any training plans for the runner, referring questions to a spokeswoman for the athlete's family.

Louw had said when the runner was in detention that he wanted to put him back into training in the event that he was granted bail. But he had also said Pistorius could be "heartbroken" and unwilling to immediately run again.

Pistorius, who was released on bail Friday, is staying at the house of his uncle, Arnold, in the affluent suburb of Waterkloof in Pretoria. He faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the killing of Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Prosecutors say the pair had an argument before Steenkamp was killed; Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder and shot her accidentally.

Smalberger said officials will visit Pistorius at his uncle's home at least four times a month, and that the runner indicated his interest in training again. More planning must occur before the start of any training.

"We want a training program from his coach so that we have backup for his movements," Smalberger said.

"He's not under house arrest, but his movements need to be known to us so that we don't pitch there and he's not there," he said. "We agree on 'free time' normally during the course of the day, and in the evening we expect him to be home."

Pistorius' 2013 season had been geared towards the Aug. 10-18 World Championships in Moscow, where the South African 4x400 relay team will be trying for another medal to add to the silver it won at the 2011 edition.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair had set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to hand over his passports, turn in any guns he owns and keep away from his upscale home in a gated community in Pretoria, the scene of the crime.

He cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission and is not allowed to consume drugs or alcohol, the magistrate said.

Christians, Muslims pray to halt Israeli security wall

Families in a West Bank town call on divine intercession to stop the construction of a barrier they say will separate residents from their own land. NBC News' Yara Borgal reports.

By Yara Borgal, Producer, NBC News

BEIT JALA, West Bank -- A West Bank community plants olive trees, even though many residents don?t think they will ever see them harvested. Any day, construction of Israel?s security wall could slice through this valley.?

?We are trying in a way to keep this land ? especially for the children of Beit Jala to feel a little bit of freedom,? said Maher Matar, a resident of the mostly Christian Palestinian community of 58 families.

Appeals to Israel?s courts have failed to stop the project, which Israel says is vital to protect it from terrorist attacks.

The impending decision has prompted both Christians and Muslims in the area to gather for weekly prayers they hope will stop Israel from building the separation wall.

While the International Criminal Court has said the wall is ?illegal? under international law, Israel maintains the structure is essential.

?It is important to remember that before the waves of Palestinian terror took 1,000 Israeli lives, there was no need for a fence. There was no need for a security barrier,? said Israeli Defense Ministry spokesman Josh Hantman. ?This barrier, it saves lives. And every inch of the barrier is open to judicial review and up for appeal.?

Israel has already completed 65 percent of the planned 435-mile barrier. Human rights organization B?Tselem says that if the wall is finished, 85 percent will fall on Palestinian land.

?People abroad they think we are terrorists,? said Elaine, a Beit Jala resident who would give only her first name.? ?We are not terrorists. We are fighting for our own rights. We are fighting for our own homes for our own land.??

Baseball: UCF ousts UConn in home tournament

The Knights (3-2) rebounded after a tough loss to the University of Florida with a 7-3 win over UConn (1-3) Friday night at Jay Bergman Field.

The UCF bats exploded in the fifth inning.

The Knights sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring six runs in the frame and facing a total of three different pitchers.

Both Erik Hempe and James Vasquez had two RBIs in the inning. Hempe ended the game going 3-3 with two singles and a double.

Second baseman Austin Johnston was moved up to the fifth spot in the batting order and delivered by reaching base three times in the game.

Chris Taladay, the team leader in hits entering the game, was the only UCF batter not to reach base in the game. Taladay went 0-4 with a strikeout.

Ben Lively had another strong outing on the bump, allowing just three hits. Lively, now 2-0 on the season, struck out six batters in seven innings of work, while surrendering just one run.

Entering the game, the UCF relievers owned a 0.68 ERA in 13 1/3 innings of work.

Pitcher Jimmy Reed threw a perfect eighth inning, while stirking out the first batter he faced. Freshman Jarrod Petree struggled in his collegiate debut, allowing two runs to the first two batters he saw.

Redshirt sophomore Spencer Davis threw one pitch in the ninth inning to record his first career save.

The Knights will host Texas Tech Saturday night for the second of three games during the WaWa Weekend Classic. The Red Raiders are 4-2 on the season, dropping the first game this weekend 10-3 against Troy.

Junior Danny Davis is projected to start for UCF on the mound. Davis is 1-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA. He went seven strong innings in a win against Siena last weekend.

On the mound for Texas Tech will be sophomore Corey Taylor. Taylor is 1-0 this season, having allowed one run in six innings of work.?

Hot sauce king dies at age 68

By Jane Sutton, Reuters

Paul McIlhenny, the chairman and chief executive of the Louisiana company that makes Tabasco brand pepper sauce, has died at age 68, the McIlhenny Co said on Sunday.

McIlhenny died on Saturday, the family-owned company said in a news release that described him as "a true bon vivant" whose passions included hunting, fishing, wine-tasting and game cooking.

He was a sixth-generation member of the McIlhenny family to live on Avery Island in the southern Louisiana bayou, and a fourth-generation member to produce pepper sauces sold worldwide under the Tabasco brand.

The McIlhenny company was founded in 1868 on Avery Island. It supplies hot sauce to the U.S. presidential plane Air Force One and to Britain's royal family, the Times-Picayune newspaper said on its website.

Paul McIlhenny joined the company in 1967 and directly oversaw the production of its sauces for 13 years, expanding both its line of spicy sauces and the array of aprons, neckties and other merchandise bearing the familiar red-and-green Tabasco logo.

He spent much of his time in New Orleans and in 2006 he reigned as Rex, the first King of Carnival during Mardi Gras celebrations after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

"All of McIlhenny Company and the McIlhenny and Avery families are deeply saddened by this news," said Tony Simmons, president of McIlhenny Co and fifth-generation McIlhenny family member. "We will clearly miss Paul's devoted leadership but will more sorely feel the loss of his acumen, his charm and his irrepressible sense of humor."

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

(AP) ? Shane Larkin noticed during warm-ups that something was off with No. 2 Miami. The go-go, uptempo Hurricanes seemed a step slow, and not entirely ready to play.

They certainly paid for it.

Miami's unbeaten start to Atlantic Coast Conference play is history. So is its 14-game winning streak and its highest-ever national ranking, after the Hurricanes were knocked off by Wake Forest 80-65 on Saturday.

"You could just see it tonight. I had a bad feeling coming into warm-ups with everybody going slow," Larkin said. "I was trying to get people to go fast, and I wasn't even going full speed like I should have.

"Overall, we weren't prepared before the game and they came out and punched us in the mouth."

Durand Scott had all 17 of his points in the second half for the Hurricanes (22-4, 13-1), the last of the schools in the six BCS conferences to get its first league loss.

Larkin added 13 points, Trey McKinney Jones had 11 and Kenny Kadji finished with 10.

But Miami never got closer than 11 in the final 9 minutes and was outrebounded 36-35 by the younger, smaller Demon Deacons as the best start to ACC play since Duke's 16-0 mark in 1998-99 came to a surprisingly lopsided end.

"You want to go undefeated, you want to win every game, but you're still in first place," Larkin said. "That's in the past and we're just going to let it stay in the past."

The Hurricanes ? whose previous three wins came by a combined 12 points ? looked like they had another tight finish in them when Scott capped an 18-8 run with a jumper with 14? minutes left to make it 46-41.

He added a layup 2 minutes later to pull Miami to 50-45, and it looked as if the Hurricanes were going to find a way to keep their charmed run rolling.

But two possessions later, C.J. Harris turned a turnover into a fast-break dunk that started a 12-0 run that put the Demon Deacons on the fast track to their biggest victory since they knocked off then-No. 1 Duke four years ago when they were in the top five themselves.

"There's been some tough times, so staying with it, fighting through adversity, finally coming on top of a big-time win is amazing," Harris said.

Harris finished with 23 points and hit all five of his 3-pointers while freshman Codi Miler-McIntyre added 15 points for the Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9).

They shot 54 percent, led by double figures for the entire second half and reeled off 12 straight points to pull away for their biggest victory under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

As the final seconds ticked away, Harris and Travis McKie ? two of the team's three available non-freshmen on scholarship ? exchanged a flying chest-bump before the Wake Forest students rushed the court for the second time in little over a month.

An 86-84 upset of then-No. 18 North Carolina State on Jan. 22 was its biggest victory under Bzdelik.

This one topped it, by far.

"Who would have ever thought Wake Forest beating Miami at home would have been a court-rushing scene?" Larkin said.

McKie finished with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots and Devin Thomas scored 10 points for the Demon Deacons, who ? after two years of being one of the ACC's worst teams ? have transformed themselves into a tough out at home in the conference.

They improved to 5-2 against ACC foes at Joel Coliseum. The losses ? to Duke and Georgia Tech ? are by a combined six points.

"It shows hope, and if everybody has faith in us and the energy stays the way it does every game ? at home, at least ? that just shows a big future for Wake Forest basketball and the entire program, period," Miller-McIntyre said. "I know it hasn't been so well in the past few years, but we're all trying to put that behind us."

They thoroughly outplayed the Hurricanes from start to finish, hitting shots from all over the court against a Miami team that at times appeared fatigued after gutting out those three tight wins but wouldn't let that excuse fly.

"Wake Forest won this game," said Miami big man Reggie Johnson, a Winston-Salem native. "We had mental lapses on the defensive and offensive end. ... I don't want to take anything away from Wake Forest."

Harris hit three 3-pointers during a 2-minute stretch of a 28-8 run that put Wake Forest up 19 on the Hurricanes ? who until then hadn't trailed by more than 13 at any point in an ACC game during their run.

Arnaud William Adala Moto's fast-break layup with just over a minute before the break put the Demon Deacons up 42-23.

"Every player in the first half for them was very sharp. They were well rested," Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. "They had a whole week to prepare for us. They defended us well and we were just not as sharp as we need to be."

Vatican rumors spread as Cardinal Dolan packs for Rome

With rumors running wild in the Eternal City, Pope Benedict XVI is reportedly cleaning house -- which in his case is the Vatican -- as Cardinal Timothy Dolan prepares to leave for Rome in time for the pontiff's retirement on Thursday.

The Holy Father is scheduled to "meet and personally greet" Dolan and all of the other cardinals in Rome at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace.

The Vatican has strongly but obtusely denied all the scandalous rumors that have been reported in the media regarding the reasons for Benedict being the first pope to resign in almost 600 years.

"It is deplorable that, as we draw closer to the moment that the Conclave will begin and the Cardinal electors will be held -- in conscience and before God -- to freely express their choice, there is a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable, or even completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions," according to an official statement from the Vatican.

"Now as never before, Catholics are focusing on what is essential: praying for Pope Benedict, praying that the Holy Spirit might enlighten the College of Cardinals, and praying for the future Pope, confident that the future of the barque of Peter is in God's hands."

According to the Associated Press, Italian newspapers have been rife for days with anonymous reports about the contents of the secret dossier that three cardinals investigating leaks of information to the media prepared for Benedict. Some rumors are that they involve a gay sex scandal within the Vatican. The "Vatileaks" scandal began after papers taken from the pope's desk were published in a blockbuster book. The pope's butler was convicted in October of aggravated theft, and later pardoned.

The Vatican has refused to comment on the reports, which have claimed the contents of the dossier, delivered to Benedict in December, were a factor in his decision to resign. Benedict himself has said he simply no longer has the "strength of mind and body" to carry on.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, has indicated that Benedict would meet with the three cardinals before stepping down Feb. 28, in one of his final private audiences.

Given the rivalries, turf battles and allegations of corruption exposed by the leaks themselves, there is some speculation that cardinals entering the conclave might want to know the contents of the dossier before choosing a new pope.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that Pope Benedict reportedly is clearing the decks of his pontificate, tweaking the rules of the conclave, finessing the religious rites used to launch the next papacy and making some eyebrow-raising final appointments before he retires next week.

The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano said in editions published late Friday that Benedict had signed a decree earlier in the week making some changes to the papal installation Mass, separating out the actual rite of installation from the liturgy itself.

He is also studying the text of a separate document governing the rules of the conclave, though it's not known if it will address the thorny issue of whether the election can begin earlier than March 15, by some interpretations the earliest the vote can start under the current rules.

And on Friday, the Vatican announced Benedict had transferred a top official in the secretariat of state, Monsignor Ettore Balestrero, to Colombia -- an appointment that came amid swirling media speculation about the contents of a confidential report into the Vatican's leaks scandal.

Balestrero was head of the Holy See's delegation to the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee, which evaluated the Vatican's anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing measures. He has had a hand in the efforts by the Vatican bank to be more transparent and is close to Benedict's No. 2, the Vatican secretary of state Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

The Vatican submitted itself to Moneyval's evaluation in a bid to improve its reputation in the financial world.

The Vatican passed the test on the first try in August, and Moneyval said it had made great progress in a short amount of time. But the Holy See received poor or failing grades for its financial watchdog agency and its bank, long the source of some of the Vatican's more storied scandals.

Some of the documents leaked in the midst of the "Vatileaks" scandal concerned differences of opinion about the level of financial transparency the Holy See should provide about the bank, the Institute for Religious Works. However, Balestrero himself wasn't named in any significant way in the leaks.

Lombardi said Balestrero's transfer had been months in the works, was a clear promotion and had nothing to do with what the Vatican considers baseless reporting.

Lombardi noted that the nunciature in Bogota is one of the most important in Latin America, with the headquarters for the Latin American bishops' conference as well as the regional organization for religious orders, and is usually headed by someone who has had experience as a nuncio in at least two other postings.

Asked if the transfer had anything to do with the broader Vatileaks investigation, Lombardi said he was declining comment in line with the Vatican's decision not to confirm or deny any specifics of the investigation.

Relativity Moves 'Turkeys' Up a Year; Amy Poehler Joins Voice Cast (Exclusive)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Relativity Media has moved up its animated film "Turkeys" by a year and will release it November 1, multiple individuals close to the project told TheWrap. In addition, Amy Poehler has joined the voice cast for the film, which Relativity and Reel FX are co-producing and co-financing, TheWrap has learned.

The movie had been scheduled to debut November 14, 2014, but Relativity and Reel FX made the aggressive scheduling move based on early footage, according to two of those individuals. Development on the project began in June 2009 and physical production began in January 2011.

Poehler, who joins Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, will voice the female lead.

Executives at the studio met about the film this week, weighing the challenges the move will pose to the filmmaking, marketing, sponsorship and merchandising teams with the opportunity to seize this Thanksgiving's family market.

DreamWorks Animation recently moved "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" from November 1 to March 2014, opening the door for kid-friendly fare before the November 22 opening of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Most of the other movies scheduled for October and November will cater to more mature audiences, spanning genres like science fiction ("Gravity," "Ender's Game"), horror ("Paranormal Activity 5," "Carrie") and action ("Malavita," "Thor: The Dark World").

Jeffrey Katzenberg's animation house has released a movie in the fall for eight of the last nine years, but its new distribution partner, Fox, moved "Peabody" to March, a month when the studio has had prior success with the "Ice Age" franchise.

DreamWorks Animation had a costly miss last November with "Rise of the Guardians," which grossed $301 million at the box office - a healthy sum, but not enough to cover costs. The company is expected to take a hefty write-down as a result in its upcoming fourth quarter earnings.

Reel FX, the Dallas-based animation and visual effects studio behind "Turkeys," actually sold "Guardians" to DWA five years ago.

"Turkeys" features the voices of Wilson and Harrelson as two spunky birds that take a time machine back to the first Thanksgiving. They want to expunge turkeys from Thanksgiving's culinary tradition. Lesley Nicol of "Downton Abbey," George Takei of "Star Trek" fame, Keith David and Colm Meaney have also been cast. Dan Fogler was already lending his voice.

Jimmy Hayward is directing the film from a script by Craig Mazin, David I. Stern, John J. Strauss.

Chesapeake fourth quarter profit tops Street, shares rise

(Reuters) - Chesapeake Energy Corp reported fourth-quarter profit that topped Wall Street estimates on Thursday, helped by lower-than-expected expenses and more profitable oil production.

Shares of Chesapeake rose nearly 2 percent to $20.60 before the start of regular trading.

The earnings report came a day after Chesapeake said an internal investigation of the financial dealings of its outgoing chief executive, Aubrey McClendon, found no "intentional" wrongdoing.

McClendon is stepping down in April following a tumultuous year during which the company faced a liquidity crunch and a governance crisis. Now Chesapeake's board and big shareholders are working to rein in spending, pay down debt and increase production of more profitable oil.

McClendon, who founded the company in 1989, was not quoted in the earnings release as he typically is.

Phil Weiss, an analyst with Argus Research, said expenses in a number of areas came in below his projections while cash flow was higher than he anticipated.

General and administrative expenses fell to $99 million in the quarter from $138 million a year earlier.

"Costs are moving in the right direction on both general and administrative and production expense," analysts at Tudor Pickering Holt & Co said in a note to clients.

The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, company said profit fell to $257 million, or 39 cents per share, in the fourth quarter, from $429 million, or 63 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding items, Chesapeake's profit came to 26 cents per share. Analysts, on average, had expected 14 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Chesapeake said production of crude oil and natural gas liquids rose 39 percent to 147,500 barrels per day, while overall output rose 9 percent.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is examining McClendon's financial transactions, while the Department of Justice and the attorney general in Michigan are investigating whether Chesapeake violated antitrust laws.

A series of Reuters investigations last year triggered civil and criminal probes into the second-largest U.S. producer of natural gas. Big shareholders Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management took control of the board in June after McClendon was stripped of the chairman job.

Winter storm blankets Great Plains with snow

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Blinding snow, at times accompanied by thunder and lightning, bombarded much of the nation's midsection Thursday, causing whiteout conditions, shutting down large swaths of interstate highways and forcing schools, businesses and even state legislatures to close.

Kansas was the epicenter of the winter storm, with parts of the state buried under 14 inches of powdery snow, but winter storm warnings stretched from eastern Colorado through Illinois. Freezing rain and sleet were forecast for southern Missouri, southern Illinois and Arkansas. St. Louis received all of the above ? a treacherous mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Several accidents were blamed on icy and slushy roadways, including two fatal accidents. Most schools in Kansas and Missouri, and many in neighboring states, were closed. Legislatures shut down in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska and Iowa.

"Thundersnow" accompanied the winter storm in parts of Kansas and Missouri, which National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Truett said is the result of an unstable air mass, much like a thunderstorm.

"Instead of pouring rain, it's pouring snow," Truett said. And pouring was a sound description, with snow falling at a rate of 1 1/2 to 2 inches per hour in some spots. Kansas City, Mo., got 5 inches in two hours.

Snow totals passed the foot mark in many places: Monarch Pass, Colo., had 17 ? inches, Hutchinson, Kan., 14 inches and Wichita, Kan., 13 inches. The National Weather Service said up to 18 inches of snow were possible in central Kansas.

With that in mind, Kansas transportation officials ? and even the governor ? urged people to simply stay home.

Drivers were particularly warned away from the Kansas Turnpike, which had whiteout conditions. Interstate 70 was also snow-packed and a 90-mile stretch of that road was closed between Salina and Hays.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback closed executive offices, except for essential personnel.

"If you don't have to get out, just really, please, don't do it," Brownback said.

Travelers filled hotels rather than skating across dangerous roadways. At the Econo Lodge in WaKeeney, Kan., assistant manager Michael Tidball said the 48-room hotel was full by 10 p.m. Wednesday and that most guests were opting to stay an extra day.

Just south of Wichita, near the small community of Clearwater, Scott Van Allen had already shoveled the sidewalks Thursday and was out on his tractor clearing the driveway of the 10 inches of snow ? just in case he might need to go out. For once, he didn't mind the task.

"I kind of enjoyed it this time," he said. "We were certainly needing the moisture terribly."

The storm brought moisture to a region of the country that has been parched for nearly a year, engulfed in the worst drought in decades. Climatologists say 12 inches of snow is equivalent to about 1 inch of rain, depending on the density of the snow.

Vance Ehmke, a wheat farmer near Healy, Kan., said the nearly foot of snow was "what we have been praying for."

"The big question is, 'Is the drought broke?' " Ehmke asked. "We desperately need this."

Near Edwardsville, Ill., wheat farmer Mike Campbell called the snow ? or any precipitation ? a blessing after a bone-dry growing season in 2012. He hopes it is a good omen as he prepares to plant corn this spring.

"The corn was just a disaster," Campbell said.

In Colorado, the U.S. Forest Service planned to take advantage of the snow to burn piles of dead trees on federal land.

Near the Nebraska-Kansas border, as much as 8 inches fell overnight, while western Nebraska saw about half of that amount, National Weather Service forecaster Shawn Jacobs said.

Areas in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle also had up to 8 inches of snow by Thursday morning. Christy Walker, a waitress at the Polly Anna Cafe in Woodward, Okla., got stuck on her drive into work. But business in the western Oklahoma town was brisk, she said.

"It's affecting everybody who is hungry and wants to come out to eat," she said. "I'm extremely busy right now."

Elsewhere, Arkansas saw a mix of precipitation ? in places, a combination of hail, sleet and freezing rain, others saw 6 inches of snow. Forecasters warned northern Arkansas could get a half-inch of ice.

Two fatal accidents were attributed to winter weather on Wednesday. In Oklahoma, 18-year-old Cody Alexander of Alex, Okla., died when his pickup truck skidded on a slushy state highway into oncoming traffic and struck a truck. And in Nebraska, 19-year-old Kristina Leigh Anne Allen of Callaway died when a SUV lost control in snowy, icy conditions, crossed the median and struck her car.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency Thursday morning and activated the State Emergency Operations Center. By midmorning Thursday, the snow was coming down so hard that Kansas City International Airport shut down. More than 200 flights were also canceled by Thursday afternoon at Lambert Airport in St. Louis.

Alex Sosnowski, a meteorologist for Accuweather, said the storm will push off into the Great Lakes and central Appalachians, and freezing rain could make it as far east and south as North Carolina. He also said a "spin-off" storm was expected to create heavy snow in New England, and could push Boston to a February record.

Accuweather said that by the time the storm dies out, at least 24 states will be affected.

Washington University student overcomes testicular cancer

While his friends crammed for exams in the library, Brendan Ziebarth spent much of his fall attached to an IV.

It was an unconventional semester.

Ziebarth, 20, is an unconventional student. When doctors told him that his testicular cancer had returned, he opted to stay at Washington University to finish out the term.

?It really appealed to me to stay at school and be with my friends, the community at Wash. U, and people who I could hang out with who would really love and support me,? Ziebarth said. ?They would definitely be worrying about me if I were at home.?

Home is Arlington, Va., where Ziebarth was when he first discovered a hardening on his right testicle last June.

The urgent care center told him everything was fine. ?I insisted I got a referral to the urologist anyway,? Ziebarth said. ?Because I knew something was wrong.?

The urologist confirmed his fears ? it was testicular cancer ? and booked him for surgery the following Monday.

Ziebarth, whose friends gave him the moniker ?Ace? after the successful surgery, returned to St. Louis in good spirits, eager to continue his studies in architecture.

He went to monthly checkups at Barnes-Jewish. August looked good, but in September, he got a call back from the hospital.

The cancer had returned.

HIGH CURE RATE

As cancers go, testicular cancer is remarkably curable.

The five-year survival rate for all men with testicular cancer is 95 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute. If the illness remains isolated to the testicle, the rate is 99 percent.

Even if the cancer re-emerges in the nearby lymph nodes, as in Ziebarth?s case, the rate is still in the 90s.

?The odds were in my favor and I had a great team,? he said.

Ziebarth began chemotherapy treatment under Dr. Bruce Roth, a specialist at Siteman Cancer Center in genitourinary cancers.

The treatment came in four three-week cycles. On the first five days of each cycle, Ziebarth went in for six hours of treatment. On the ninth and 16th days, he went in for an hour.

He opted for IV treatment as opposed to a surgically implanted port. ?To me, it was less of a constant reminder that I was sick,? Ziebarth said.

Ziebarth?s team tailored his regimen to how his body responded to certain drugs and steroids, but he still felt the sickness brought on by chemotherapy.

?I had constant heartburn,? he said. ?I would be hungry, but then I wouldn?t want to eat because of the heartburn.?

On day eight of cycle two, Ziebarth came down with a fever and went to the emergency room. That night, he had a CT scan, an MRI, a spinal tap and numerous swabs and cultures. The doctors told Ziebarth he probably had a sinus infection.

?The other thing we learned was that I was having allergic reaction to the chemo drug Bleomycin. It gave me an excruciating migraine,? Ziebarth said. ?My dad has them frequently, and I learned to empathize because it was unbearable.

?That was sort of my darkest hour.?

A SOCIAL NETWORK

But Ziebarth said school work helped distract him from the realities of chemotherapy. The university worked with him to set up a lighter load of six credits.

?I was able to take my Intro to Sexuality Studies work with me to the hospital during treatment,? Ziebarth said. ?It was a lot of reading, but it was fascinating to me.?

He even tried Skyping into class from the hospital one day. ?It was really awkward talking about sex with all these other patients listening. I was in a room with seven other people who were getting treated, and they all tended to be in their sixth decade or so,? he said.

For the younger crowd, Ziebarth made a Facebook group so loved ones could receive updates on his health and know when to offer a helping hand. Friends raced to get Tylenol and volunteered to drive him to appointments, helping to relieve the burden on Ziebarth?s local family members.

And when Ziebarth lost his hair, one of his fraternity brothers ? in an impaired state ? decided to shave his in solidarity. Others soon followed.

?I thought it was great,? Ziebarth said. He told his friends that, when asked about their newly buzzed heads, they should use the opportunity to raise awareness about men?s cancers.

Figures like Lance Armstrong have boosted attention toward testicular cancer in recent years. ?Teenagers and young 20-year-olds are much more aware because of high profile cases,? said Roth, who was on the team that treated Armstrong at Indiana University.

Roth says it?s important to instruct potential patients on checking themselves because a yearly physical may be too infrequent to catch a growing mass.

And while his patients may be young, Roth also suggests that they think long term. ?We recommend to bank sperm for patients going under chemotherapy.? Roth said many testicular cancer patients already have lower sperm counts, and some are sterile.

Ziebarth received his last chemotherapy treatment in Arlington over winter break.

It was Christmas Eve.

?I went out to dinner with my family to celebrate what we were pretty sure would be the last treatment, then we had Christmas and New Year?s,? he said. ?It was great to be home.?

He got the news he had been waiting for back in St. Louis. ?Dr. Roth did his job, cured me,? Ziebarth said.

The whole time Ziebarth had wanted to remain stoic in the face of the disease. ?The heartburn, the migraines, they were inconsequential compared to the amount of suffering that so many other people go through,? he said.

So it didn?t really hit him until he called his parents and heard their relief.

?For the rest of the day, I was just sort of happy,? Ziebarth said.

If the Internet is any indication, his friends were happy too. Ziebarth?s Facebook status relaying the good news has garnered 427 likes and counting.

?I?m pretty sure it?s the only Facebook status I?ve ever made with more than 10 or 15 likes,? he said. ?It was very touching to see how many people were there for me.?

With peach fuzz now emerging from his scalp, Ziebarth is enjoying the spring semester. He enrolled in five architecture classes and plans to complete a minor in urban design.

The best reward? Ziebarth will use the scholarship money he saved by taking less coursework toward a summer abroad program in Florence, Italy.

?I?ll be living in an apartment down the street from the Duomo,? Ziebarth said. ?Doing studio by day, drinking wine all day and all night.?

Balsam for the Bones: Chemists develop a nanopaste for the repair of bone defects

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Following accidents or cancer surgery surgeons often have to transplant healthy bone tissue or synthetic material to repair the resulting bone defects. Unfortunately, these procedures do not always have the desired effect.

Now a professor for inorganic chemistry, Matthias Epple was attracted to the interface between biology and medical science. "We have been investigating the impact of mineral tissue such as teeth, bone and sea shells for many years and are now using the knowledge we have gained to produce new biomaterials." To achieve this he has collaborated closely with medical scientists and his current project -- carried out with three of his doctoral students -- was no exception.

"The repair of bone defects presents a real challenge for surgeons," he relates. "When possible they collect the patient's own bone from various locations, such as the iliac crest, and implant it where needed to fill defects." The researcher explained that since there is only a limited amount of surplus bone material in the body, synthetic materials are now being used. "Calcium phosphate is a natural choice here since it is an inorganic mineral found in bones in the form of nanocrystals. It is a material familiar to the body, which makes it a suitable carrier." He added that the calcium and phosphate ions lead to improved new bone formation.

However, the use of synthetic materials creates a host of new problems: the bones heal more slowly, the risk of infection is greater and the mechanical stability is not ideal. Epple's team has now created a bone repair paste by coating synthetic nanocrystals of calcium phosphate with nucleic acids -- in other words, with DNA. The professor explains what happens when this paste is injected into a bone defect: "The nanoparticles are taken up by cells. The calcium phosphate dissolves and the DNA that is released stimulates the formation of two proteins important for healing: BMP-7, which stimulates bone formation, and VEGF-A, which is responsible for the creation of new blood vessels. As a result, the new bone is supplied with valuable nutrients."

The UDE researchers expect that the paste will have a long-lasting effect since the nanoparticles are released successively and thus continuously stimulate the surrounding cells. They have demonstrated that the paste works in three different cell types. Further tests now have to be conducted. Epple and his co-researchers hope that "our development will be used several years from now in the field of traumatology and in the treatment of osteoporosis."
