Hurting at home, China's Li Ning courts U.S. glitz

By Donny Kwok and Adam Jourdan

HONG KONG/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's biggest sportswear brand, Li Ning Co Ltd , launched its newest brand at a gala event in Texas last month with U.S. basketball star Dwayne Wade, resplendent in gold bow tie and plaid suit, showing off sports shoes he helped design.

But his fans can't buy them yet.

Li Ning, founded by the Chinese Olympic gymnast of the same name, has no stores in the United States and recently shut the e-commerce section of its U.S. website.

While luring Wade from rival Nike Inc last year in a sponsorship deal worth an estimated $100 million over 10 years is a major coup for the Chinese firm, it has left analysts puzzling the logic of splashing out on an expensive NBA superstar with no apparent U.S. retail strategy in place.

Sports industry analysts said the Wade signing was more about marketing to Chinese consumers than trying to build brand recognition in the United States, where Nike and its Jordan brand control 90 percent of the basketball shoe market.

"The primary idea here is to say to the Chinese consumer, 'One of the best players in the NBA is wearing our shoes and you should too,'" said Matt Powell, an analyst with Boulder, Colorado-based sporting goods research group SportsOneSource.

The Chinese firm is paying top dollar for an elite athlete just as Nike and other established sportswear brands are scaling back on big-name endorsements because of disappointing returns.

A decade ago, Nike reportedly paid Wade's superstar teammate Lebron James more than $90 million for a 7-year contract, but high-potential rookie players now command shoe contracts worth just $1-$2 million a year, Powell said. James is the world's fourth highest-paid athlete with endorsements bringing in $40 million a year, according to a Forbes ranking as of June 2012. Wade ranked 35th, with $12 million a year in endorsements.

"It (the Wade deal) has a positive effect in boosting Li Ning's image ... but it doesn't necessarily generate more sales," said Elyse Wang, an analyst at Haitong International Research in Shenzhen. "The deal is not justified as for sure it's offering a very high price."

Li Ning declined to comment on details of the Wade deal. Nike declined to comment on Li Ning's strategy.

OLD STOCK

Li Ning, valued at around $600 million, is expected to report a net loss of close to 1.1 billion yuan ($177 million) on Monday, according to Thomson Reuters SmartEstimate, after spending as much as $288 million to buy back unwanted inventory from its distributors. Turnover is forecast to have dropped 16 percent last year to around 7.5 billion yuan.

A recent visit to one of Shenzhen's busy shopping areas, where Li Ning and local rivals had stores last year, showed the company had shut up shop and moved to an upper floor of a nearby department store. Rivals ANTA Sports Products Ltd and 361 Degrees International Ltd were still at street level, though their stores were full of old stock.

Like industry peers, Li Ning raced to open hundreds of stores in the afterglow of the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but has been forced to retreat as sales have slumped. Li Ning shares have tumbled 86 percent from an April 2010 peak - the Hang Seng Index <.hsi> is up 2.3 percent over the same period - and 15 of 22 analysts who track the stock rate it a "sell" or "strong sell", Thomson Reuters data show.

A burst of excitement over new Wade gear would give a much-needed boost, but none was sighted in Shenzhen stores last week.

"They're out to prove that they, and by extension Chinese brands, can compete head-to-head with the global giants. The issue is that they're having trouble being successful at it," said James Roy, senior analyst at China Market Research Group.

Li Ning has also kept its U.S. plans tightly under wraps. Its shop.li-ning.com website, which offered online shopping as recently as February, is now just a single page linking to another bare-bones site promoting Wade. Calls to a U.S. customer service number during business hours were answered by a recorded message directing customers to send an email. A Reuters reporter seeking comment from the firm's U.S. headquarters in Chicago was advised that all queries must go through the China office.

Will DeGirolamo, an executive at PR firm DiGennaro Communications that represents Li Ning's brand initiative director Brian Cupps, said there would be more news soon on the Wade deal, including the U.S. launch of a new line of sneakers. "The sneakers will be available for the first time in the U.S. in early April," DeGirolamo said.

In an emailed response to Reuters questions for this article, the company's founder said: "The recent successful launch of the Wade brand is a great example of the high performance, high quality product lines that we are developing for our customers. The response so far has been very positive and we look forward to sharing 'The Way of Wade' with fans across the U.S. and China."

FADING STARS

Not having shoes on the market now means Li Ning may be missing out on a golden opportunity as Wade's team, the Miami Heat, is on a run of 25 straight wins, the second-longest streak in NBA history after the Los Angeles Lakers' 33-game run in 1971-72. Li Ning sponsors the Miami Heat and has previously signed one of Wade's former teammates, Shaquille O'Neal, who retired in 2011.

SportsOneSource's Powell said sales of Lebron James' shoes were at an all-time high thanks to the Heat's success. Nike reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings on Thursday, and future orders for delivery in March-July rose 11 percent in its North American market.

Other Chinese sportswear brands have struggled to turn NBA endorsements into sales success. ANTA, which signed Boston Celtics player Kevin Garnett to an endorsement deal in 2010 and featured him on the cover of its annual report, saw its 2012 profits fall by more than a fifth.

"NBA stars have a very big influence in (the sportswear market in) China," ANTA's chief operating officer Lai Shixian told Reuters in February, adding the company would consider more endorsements for suitable athletes.

Powell said even Nike was finding it tough to turn big-name endorsements into profits, noting it was only now making money off Lebron James gear, a decade after signing him. "Athletes just don't sell product like they used to," he said.

Kerry in Iraq to press on Iran flights to Syria

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Iraq on an unannounced visit to urge Iraqi leaders to stop Iranian overflights of arms and fighters heading to Syria and to overcome sectarian differences that still threaten Iraqi stability 10 years after the American-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

Kerry flew into Baghdad on Sunday from Amman after accompanying President Barack Obama to Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.

Officials traveling with him said Kerry would press Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other senior officials on democratic reforms and directly urge them to stop overflights of Iranian aircraft carrying military personnel and equipment to support the Syrian government as it battles rebels. Iran and Iraq both say the flights are laden with humanitarian supplies, but the U.S. and others believe they are filled with weapons and fighters to help the Assad regime.

The overflights have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq and Kerry will tell the Iraqis that allowing them to continue will make the situation in Syria worse and ultimately threaten Iraq's stability.

A senior U.S. official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," as well as overland shipments to Syria through Iraq from Iran, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly preview Kerry's meetings, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

A group of fighters in Syria known as Jabhat al-Nusra, a powerful offshoot of al-Qaida in Iraq, has claimed responsibility for most of the deadliest suicide bombings against regime and military facilities and, as a result, has gained popularity among some rebels.

However, the group has alienated secular-minded fighters, which is one reason the U.S. has not equipped the rebels with weapons. The Obama administration designated al-Nusra as a terrorist organization last December

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but the official said that since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities.

Kerry will tell al-Maliki, a Shiite with close ties to Iran, that Iraq cannot be part of the political discussion about Syria's future until it clamps down on the Iranian shipments, the official said.

As Iraq approaches provincial elections next month, Kerry will also stress the importance of ensuring that all elements of society feel enfranchised, the official said. A recent decision to delay the polls in Anbar and Nineveh provinces is a "serious setback" to Iraq's democratic institutions and should be revisited, the official said.

In addition to al-Maliki, Kerry was seeing Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also plans to speak by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions - especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

He will stress the "importance of maintaining the unity of Iraq," say that "separate efforts undercut the unity of the country" and that "the Kurdish republic cannot survive financially without the support of Baghdad," the official said.

Kerry's visit to Iraq is the first by a U.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden.

Kerry's arrival came just three days after the anniversary of the U.S.-led war that began on March 20, 2003, with an airstrike on Dora Farms in southern Baghdad in a failed attempt to kill Hussein.

The invasion and toppling of Hussein sparked years of bloodshed as Sunni and Shiite militants battled U.S. forces and each other, leaving nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis dead.

Violence has ebbed sharply since the peak of Sunni-Shiite fighting that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. But insurgents are still able to stage high-profile attacks, and sectarian and ethnic rivalries remain threats to the country's long-term stability.

Earlier this week, an al-Qaida in Iraq front group claimed responsibility nearly 20 attacks that killed 65 people across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Islamic State of Iraq said it unleashed the car bombs and other explosions to avenge the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons. Its claim came on the 10th anniversary of the start of the war, although it made no reference to the significance of the date.

911 callers pleaded for help for baby shot in Ga.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) ? Neighbors of a Georgia woman whose baby was fatally shot in his stroller made frantic calls to 911, some weeping and pleading for help.

Police in the coastal city of Brunswick released recordings Saturday of three 911 calls placed right after the shooting.

One woman sobs as she says: "Somebody shot this child ... Please we need everything we can get."

No callers reported seeing the shootings Thursday. That morning, 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was killed and his mother was wounded. Sherry West says a teenager shot them because she refused to give him money.

One caller solemnly tells an operator: "No, the baby's not breathing." He says the child was shot "right between the eyes."

A woman can be heard screaming in the background just before police arrive.

The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 (Liberation Trilogy)The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 (Liberation Trilogy)

The magnificent conclusion to Rick Atkinson?s acclaimed Liberation Trilogy about the Allied triumph in Europe during World War II

It is the twentieth century?s unrivaled epic: at a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his bestselling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted how the American-led coalition fought through North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all?the titanic battle for Western Europe.

D-Day marked the commencement of the final campaign of the European war, and Atkinson?s riveting account of that bold gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows. The brutal fight in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the disaster that was Operation Market Garden, the horrific Battle of the Bulge, and finally the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich?all these historic events and more come alive with a wealth of new material and a mesmerizing cast of characters. Atkinson tells the tale from the perspective of participants at every level, from presidents and generals to war-weary lieutenants and terrified teenage riflemen. When Germany at last surrenders, we understand anew both the devastating cost of this global conflagration and the enormous effort required to win the Allied victory.

With the stirring final volume of this monumental trilogy, Atkinson?s accomplishment is manifest. He has produced the definitive chronicle of the war that unshackled a continent and preserved freedom in the West.

Senate Passes Democratic Budget

WASHINGTON ? An exhausted Senate gave pre-dawn approval Saturday to a Democratic $3.7 trillion budget for next year that embraces nearly $1 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade but shelters domestic programs targeted for cuts by House Republicans.

While their victory was by a razor-thin 50-49 vote, it allowed Democrats to tout their priorities. Yet it doesn't resolve the deep differences the two parties have over deficits and the size of government.

Joining all Republicans voting no were four Democrats who face re-election next year in potentially difficult races: Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., did not vote.

White House spokesman Jay Carney praised the Senate plan, saying in a statement it "will create jobs and cut the deficit in a balanced way."

While calling on both sides to find common ground, Carney did not hold out much hope for compromise with Republicans. The rival budget passed by the GOP-led House cuts social programs too deeply, he said, and fails "to ask for a single dime of deficit reduction from closing tax loopholes for the wealthy and well-connected."

The Senate vote came after lawmakers labored through the night on scores of symbolic amendments, ranging from voicing support for letting states collect taxes on Internet sales to expressing opposition to requiring photo IDs for voters.

Final approval came at around 5 a.m. EDT, capping an extraordinary 20 hours of votes and debate. As the night wore on, virtually all senators remained in the chamber, a rarity during a normal business day. But at that hour, most had nowhere else to go.

The Senate's budget would shrink annual federal shortfalls over the next decade to nearly $400 billion, raise unspecified taxes by $975 billion and cull modest savings from domestic programs.

In contrast, a rival budget approved by the GOP-run House balances the budget within 10 years without boosting taxes.

That blueprint_ by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., his party's vice presidential candidate last year ? claims $4 trillion more in savings over the period than Senate Democrats by digging deeply into Medicaid, food stamps and other safety net programs for the needy. It would also transform the Medicare health care program for seniors into a voucher-like system for future recipients.

"We have presented very different visions for how our country should work and who it should work for," said Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash.

The long debate got testy at times.

As the clock ticked past 1 a.m., Murray asked senators to show respect for colleagues "who may not be able to stand as long as us, or who are elderly." Sen. David Vitter, R-La., shot back that Republicans were not trying to delay anything, and wondered what flights or other appointments would be missed if senators voted until 7 a.m.

The loudest acclaim came toward the end, when senators rose as one to cheer a handful of Senate pages ? high school students ? for their work in the chamber since the morning's opening gavel. Senators then left town for a two-week spring recess.

Congressional budgets are planning documents that leave actual changes in revenues and spending for later legislation, and this was the first the Democratic-run Senate has approved in four years. That lapse is testament to the political and mathematical contortions needed to write fiscal plans in an era of record-breaking deficits, and to the parties' profoundly conflicting views.

Republicans said the Democratic budget wasn't much of an accomplishment. "The only good news is that the fiscal path the Democrats laid out...won't become law," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

"I believe we're in denial about the financial condition of our country," Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, top Republican on the Budget panel, said of Democratic efforts to boost spending on some programs. "Trust me, we've got to have some spending reductions."

Though budget shortfalls have shown signs of easing slightly and temporarily, there is no easy path for the two parties to find compromise ? which the first months of 2013 have amply illustrated.

Already this year, Congress has raised taxes on the rich after narrowly averting tax boosts on virtually everyone else, tolerated $85 billion in automatic spending cuts, temporarily sidestepped a federal default and prevented a potential government shutdown.

By sometime this summer, the government's borrowing limit will have to be extended again ? or a default will be at risk ? and it is unclear what Republicans may demand for providing needed votes. It is also uncertain how the two parties will resolve the differences between their two budgets, something many believe simply won't happen.

Both sides have expressed a desire to reduce federal deficits. But President Barack Obama is demanding a combination of tax increases and spending cuts to do so, while GOP leaders say they won't consider higher revenues but want serious reductions in Medicare and other benefit programs that have rocketed deficits skyward.

Obama plans to release his own 2014 budget next month, an unveiling that will be studied for whether it signals a willingness to engage Republicans in negotiations or play political hardball.

The amendments senators considered during their long day of debate were all nonbinding, but some delivered potent political messages.

They voted in favor of giving states more powers to collect sales taxes on online purchases their citizens make from out-of-state Internet companies, and to endorse the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that is to pump oil from Canada to Texas refineries.

They also voiced support for eliminating the $2,500 annual cap on flexible spending account contributions imposed by Obama's health care overhaul and for charging regular postal rates for mailings by political parties, which currently qualify for the lower prices paid by nonprofits.

In a rebuke to one of the Senate's most conservative members, they overwhelmingly rejected a proposal by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., to cut even deeper than the House GOP budget and eliminate deficits in just five years.

The Democratic budget's $975 billion in new taxes would be matched by an equal amount of spending reductions coming chiefly from health programs, defense and reduced interest payments as deficits get smaller than previously anticipated.

This year's projected deficit of nearly $900 billion would fall to around $700 billion next year and bottom out near $400 billion in 2016 before trending upward again.

Shoehorned into the package is $100 billion for public works projects and other programs aimed at creating jobs.

Alabama hires Bill Battle as athletic director

(AP) ? Bill Battle was hired as Alabama's athletic director Friday, coming out of semi-retirement at 71 to return the school that has won the last two national football titles.

University trustees unanimously approved Mal Moore's hand-picked successor and former Crimson Tide football teammate. Moore resigned Wednesday because of health problems.

"They told me that they were interested in me taking this job," Battle said at his introductory news conference. "My first reaction was, 'Wow, this is a great honor. But, man, do I really want to do this?' For the last two weeks, that's what I've been wrestling with." He decided if he didn't do it, "It would be a big mistake."

Football coach Nick Saban called Battle a "first-class person and leader" and invited him to practice later Friday while joking that it's against NCAA rules for him to coach.

Battle called it "a labor of love" but also said it's a big challenge to take over a program that has been flourishing ? four national championships in 2011-12 and three of the last four titles in football.

Alabama President Judy Bonner said Battle will make $620,000 annually over four years.

Battle played with Moore on Bear Bryant's 1961 national championship team. He spent seven years as Tennessee's head coach in the 1970s.

Battle founded Collegiate Licensing Company in 1981 and spent 21 years as president and CEO. He had been working as a consultant in recent years in the Atlanta area.

Moore has been hospitalized for more than a week at Duke University Medical Center. Battle said Moore has a long, hard road to recovery.

"He's in good spirits," Battle said. "He looks like he's gone through the worst two-a-day practice that he's ever gone through."

Trustee Finis St. John said Alabama is "incredibly fortunate to have someone available and willing to take this job with the integrity and experience coach Battle brings."

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Watching film of Louisville demolishing Colorado State is going to be scary enough for anyone who has to face the Cardinals over the next two weeks.

Hearing what coach Rick Pitino said afterward is going to be downright terrifying.

"We can play much better," Pitino said. "This is the best we have played so far at both ends of the floor. ... But we can definitely get better and improve."

It's tough to see how.

Russ Smith scored 27 on 7-of-15 shooting, three other Cardinals reached double figures and top-seeded Louisville put on a defensive clinic in dismantling Colorado State 82-56 on Saturday.

Louisville forced the eighth-seeded Rams into a season-high 20 turnovers and outrebounded Colorado State 29-24 ? no small thing considering the Rams came in with a nation-best plus-12 margin. Colton Iverson and Pierce Hornung, the country's best rebounding tandem, managed just eight. Greg Smith led the Rams (26-9) with 14 points while Dorian Green, who'd scored 26 against Missouri, was held to just six on 2-of-13 shooting.

"I don't want to put the pressure on Rick and his guys, but they're special," Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy said. "They need a little luck like everybody does to win it all, but that's as impressive team as I've been against, certainly."

Louisville (31-5) will play 12th-seeded Oregon on Friday in Indianapolis. The Cardinals have won 12 straight since a five-overtime loss to Notre Dame.

"Our preparation coming into every game has to be sky-high," Kevin Ware said. "Coach P doesn't allow any letdowns."

Playing Louisville and its relentless press is about as much fun as facing a really angry octopus. The Cardinals look as if they have eight players on the floor, what with all the arms waving and bodies smothering whoever has the bad luck to have the ball, and when one guy sits down, there's one just as physical right there to take his place.

Few teams have had much success against Louisville ? there's a reason the Cardinals are the overall No. 1 seed ? but Colorado State seemed as if it might have a shot. The Rams run a motion offense that's tough to defend, grab rebounds by the dozens, and are a savvy, veteran team that doesn't turn the ball over. In fact, when Pitino made out his "dangerous" list before the tournament began, Colorado State was on it.

"We were sick about this game," Pitino said. "We really were."

So much for that.

Colorado State actually shot the ball well ? 47.5 percent. The Cardinals just wouldn't let them do it very often, limiting the Rams to 18 shots in the first half and 40 total.

They hounded Colorado State when it was inbounding the ball; the Rams had back-to-back possessions in the first half when they couldn't even get the ball in play. They circled Colorado State when the Rams brought it up, with more than one turnover coming on a desperation heave across midcourt to beat the whistle. And, of course, they clogged up every inch of the court where the Rams might have a view of their basket, repeatedly slapping the ball away or stepping in front of passes.

The Rams reached their season average in turnovers (11) by halftime, and topped their previous worst for the season (16) with 15:33 still to play.

"We've seen them against North Carolina A&T and some other teams and kind of get prepared for it. But you see the bodies out there flying around and doing what they do, it's a lot different," Greg Smith said. "It's just total chaos. Some of those guys are just so fast, and you may think that you have an open lane or you think the pass is coming and they close it down so quick."

Meanwhile, the Cardinals were scoring at will.

Two days after matching the NCAA tournament record with eight steals, Smith's well-rounded scoring line had Louisville fans chanting "Russ Arena" ? sure to go over well with the Kentucky fans. Even LeBron James took note, saying on Twitter: "The lil homie Russ Smith putting on a show right now! (hasthtag)onfire"

After Daniel Berajano's 3 pulled Colorado State within 21-19 with 9:12 left in the first half, Russ Smith went off. His 3-pointer sparked a 22-7 run that effectively put the game out of reach. Though five Cardinals scored during the spurt, Russ Smith did most of the damage with 13 points in about six minutes.

He finished the day 4-of-7 from long range, and missed only one of his 10 free throws. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

"Just give him the ball. It's as simple as that," Peyton Siva said of his backcourt mate's hot streak. "He's a scoring machine. He makes my job a lot easier. I just have to feed him the ball, get my assists up and get back on defense."

Fuel-cell Vehicles Twice As Fuel-Efficient As Gas-Powered Cars ...

?

Hydrogen does not seem on top of President Obama?s agenda, neither does it rank very high on Martin Winterkorn?s list of priorities, but it sure is popular in Japan. Japanese carmakers, led by Toyota, are targeting a 2015 launch of hydrogen cars.

Toyota also says they are the most energy-efficient.

According to The Nikkei [sub], Toyota figures that fuel-cell vehicles are about twice as fuel-efficient as gas-powered cars. And contrary to popular wisdom, there is lots of hydrogen. Says the Nikkei:

?Hydrogen can be made from liquefied natural gas and obtained via industrial processes such as the refining of petroleum and the production of steel. Oil refineries produce massive amounts of hydrogen to remove sulfur while producing gasoline and other petroleum products.

As refineries start to close, oil companies will no longer need to use hydrogen to remove sulfur from petroleum products. This will create a surplus supply of hydrogen, which can then be used to power fuel-cell vehicles.?

There is another source of hydrogen: Dead trees. A group in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture. wants to produce hydrogen from gas generated by turning timber into wood chips.

The hard part is to make fuel cell vehicles affordable, and to package everything so that it fits a compact car. Toyota does not have a problem envisaging fuel cell vehicles at a reasonable cost. Two years ago already, Toyota?s chief engineer Satoshi Ogiso told TTAC that an affordable hydrogen-powered car in this decade is ?his job.?

The Writer's Author Rank Cheat Sheet | Copyblogger

Image of Google+ Logo

Mention the words ?Author Rank? and online writers typically cock their heads or raise an eyebrow.

They?ve more than likely heard of it, but defining it is an entirely different animal.

That?s because it refers to a nebulous Google algorithm that seems more legend than reality and can often cause confusion.

Yet, if you?ve been following us over the last five posts in this series you probably realize that the developments behind Author Rank (Google+, Search + Your World, and authorship markup) will help you drive more traffic to your website, increase your online visibility, and establish your online authority.

In other words, there are rock-solid benefits to this thing called Author Rank, but taking advantage of those benefits can be intimidating. Maybe you?re asking questions like ?

 • Where do I start?
 • Do I have the technical skills?
 • Will it work for me?
 • How do I know when it is working?
 • What am I trying to accomplish?
 • Do I have time for this?

Compound these worries with the notion that you could be leaving attention, authority, and leads on the table because you can?t (or don?t) have the resources necessary to work this algorithm ? and the tension builds.

Hopefully this post (as well as the earlier ones in the series) will relieve some of that tension.

A brief summary of Author Rank

Let?s start from the beginning.

Author Rank was born out of a patent that Google filed back in 2005 called AgentRank. As I wrote in Seven Ways Writers Can Build Authority Online with Google+:

AgentRank is supposed to create digital signatures for ?agents? (think writers and other content creators), which would then accumulate reputation scores based upon public reaction to their content (comments, social shares, links).

The important distinction here is that this score was ?portable.? It wasn?t tied to a site (which doesn?t move across the web), but a person (who does). That?s impossible to do, however, unless you establish a platform to identify ?agents.?

The one problem with the above patent was that the identity was not portable. It wasn?t mobile. So Google updated their patent to Author Rank, making the identity of the author capable of being traced across the web ? as long as he has a Google+ account and authorship markup implemented.

Yep, just quoted myself there. Anyway ?

Google was closing in on the PageRank loophole that allowed spammers to game search rankings. Content was definitely king, but the throne was empty.

So the goal behind updating the Google algorithm with something like Author Rank is to penalize anonymous players, while rewarding verified authors with higher visibility and clickthroughs.

As AJ Kohn said on his Author Rank post:

? you put together the launch of Google+ (an identity platform) with rel=author (a digital signature) and add in the acquisition of two companies (PostRank and SocialGrapple) who mine activity and engagement and it is clear that Google is anxious to use Author Rank to help it deal with the digital content avalanche.

Finally ? the horse is in front of the cart.

What an Author Rank score might look like

While Author Rank remains a theory (with strong evidence in its support) I think it is safe to say that content creators will probably have a score much like pages have scores in PageRank.

What might your Author Rank (let?s call it ?AR? from now on) score be based upon?

It?s all about the value an author brings to the table. And that value is based on who you are, who you hang out with, and what you create. Let?s start with your Google+ account:

 • Participation ? More participation on Google+ could mean a higher AR score. Google might even evaluate the content you share in detail: Are you posting text, videos, or images? Are you creating original work or just re-sharing others? Are you liking and commenting? Are you replying to the comments you get? Are you doing hangouts? Joining communities? What does your participation look like in those channels? Have you fleshed out your profile and created Circles?
 • Audience size ? How many connections do you have on Google+? How many people are connected to you? What?s the quality of those connections? Do you have thought leaders connecting to you?
 • Your interactions with content ? Google is probably also looking at how you interact with other content. Are you leaving quality comments? Are people responding to your comments and reviews? Are thought leaders responding to those comments? Are your comments getting +1s?

Of course, your score wouldn?t be tied just to your Google+ account. Google would use factors for content external to their social network.

For instance, Google looks at:

 • Average PageRank of your published content ? If you are new to the concept of PageRank, check out Danny Sullivan?s article What Is Page Rank? A Guide for Searchers & Webmasters.
 • Authority across other social media platforms ? Google will try to factor in your profiles on other social sites based on the limited data they receive from those sites.
 • Top-level authority indicators ? Mentions in authoritative websites like Wikipedia, The New York Times, universities, or government sites will suggest to Google that you?re a notable expert in your field.

But don?t forget that Google still looks at the content on your own website:

 • Content Quality ? Is your content useful, original, and ultra-specific? When readers find you, do they stick around? Would Panda punish it? Who?s sharing your content? And how often? Are authoritative sites linking to it?
 • Content Quantity ? How often do you publish on your site? What about other sites? And what?s the quality of that content? Are you getting the same quality signals when you publish on other sites?

So now it comes down to brass tacks.

Your Author Rank cheat sheet

In the following bullet list you?ll discover how to leverage the pieces behind Author Rank.

 • Create a Google+ account ? This is the easy part. Make sure you create a solid bio. Use keywords that identify your area of expertise. And don?t forget to follow us on Google+.
 • Implement the authorship markup ? When Google first rolled out authorship markup, it was intimidating. I wrote a couple of guides for clients trying to explain the process and it wasn?t easy. Google simplified the process with their authorship sign-up tool. However, you can pull it off in just a couple minutes if you are using the Genesis Framework for WordPress. Make sure you associate it with your Google+ profile, use a good headshot, and check your status with the rich snippet tool.
 • Boost activity on social sites ? Put some quality time into interacting on social media sites, especially Google+. Focus on your top three. For example, for me that would be my blog, Twitter, and Google+. For you that might mean Google+, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.
 • Connect with influencers ? Get in a habit of re-sharing content from your friends and thought leaders. ?+1? their posts and make intelligent comments. Write interesting posts on Google+ and quote these influencers by name. Build upon the content they?ve already created ? add to or challenge their work in a re-share.
 • Continue to create and publish great content ? This is what you will ultimately be judged upon, and is the core driver of the qualitative history of a writer that?s behind Author Rank. Keep writing and publishing those thoughtful, useful blog posts and building your authoritative bank of content.

Currently the rate of adoption to implement authorship markup has been slow, so there is a distinct advantage in having claimed your content. So don?t hesitate to benefit from higher clickthroughs.

The rest is up to you

Nobody is going to hold you underwater until you open a Google+ account. They?re not going to smack your knuckles with a ruler until you claim your articles with authorship markup. They won?t deprive you of sleep until you create great content.

Becoming a remarkable writer and getting credit for that writing is up to you.

So, do me a favor. If you?re a writer with just a smidgen of desire to be great, then pull a Cortez and sink the boats behind you, so there?s no going back.

Declare that this year is going to be the year you become the central character of the story ? that this is the year you?ll run the show.

It?s up to you.

Productivity And Time Management To Increase Your Internet ...

by Dan B. on March 18, 2013

Is productivity something you give much thought to in your business? What about time management? These are two areas that can make or break your business, yet many new online entrepreneurs do not give them a thought until it?s too late and the business is struggling. You need to think about the activities and tasks that are necessary and relevant to moving your business forward, the amount of time you spend learning versus actually taking action, and the more long-range plans that can take your business to the next level as quickly as possible.

During my first year online I was not very productive. I wasted lots of time attempting to find the information I would need in order to build a business. Once I had isolated the specific activities I needed to engage in each day I became more productive than ever. Within a short period of time I became much faster at what I was doing and my skills also improved. I could accomplish more in a day than I used to do in a week or more. This led me to start sharing my techniques and strategies with others. Only engage in activities that will move your business forward and you will stay on track.

My first year was also consumed with learning new things. I felt like I was working eight to ten hours each day, but actually I was reading, listening to audios, and attending live teleseminars and webinars for most of that time. Once I cut that down to learning only two hours each day my productivity really increased dramatically. This business is like any other; once you have learned enough to be able to do it yourself you must jump in and start taking action.

My plans when I came online were to be able to replace my income from my previous offline jobs. I just didn?t give much thought to what would happen after that because I constantly worried about earning enough money to pay my bills each month. Once that became mush easier I was able to think ahead. I encourage you to do this from the very beginning so that you have more of a direction in your life and business. I now plan each quarter so that my business moves along at a steady clip.

You can see that productivity and time management are areas where you can improve if you just give this some thought and take action on a regular basis.

Remember that the reason to start an Internet business is to give you the time and money to live the life you choose. Ole Miss takes on Florida in SEC title tilt

Seeking their first conference title since 2007, the top-seeded Florida Gators will take on the upset-minded Ole Miss Rebels to decide the Southeastern Conference Tournament champion at Brigdestone Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Ole Miss enters this contest with its NCAA Tournament hopes still alive after posting wins against Missouri (64-62) and Vanderbilt (64-52) in the first two rounds of the tournament. The Rebels have won six of their last seven games to improve to 25-8 overall, which has them in the running for one of the final at-large bids for the Big Dance. Ole Miss has not claimed an SEC title since 1981, and has not been in the tourney title tilt since 2001.

The Gators are making their second appearance in the championship game in the last three years. To get here they posted two rather convincing wins over LSU (80-58) and Alabama (61-51). Florida is a lock to be in the field for the NCAA Tournament, but is hoping earn its first SEC Tournament crown since winning three straight between 2004-07. UF is 25-6 overall and had a 14-4 mark against conference foes during the regular season when it reached as high as No. 2 in the national rankings.

During the regular season these teams met just once with Florida routing Ole Miss, 78-64, at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville. The Gators have now won five straight in the series which they lead by a 61-42 margin.

Marshall Henderson scored a game-high 23 points to lead Ole Miss to its win over Vanderbilt in the semifinals. The Rebels trailed for most of the first half, but battled to tie the game at 26-26 heading into the break. After halftime, the Rebels connected on 48.1 percent of their field goal attempts to pull away for the 12-point victory.

Paced by Henderson (20 ppg), the Rebels have been the top scoring team in the SEC this year as they average 78.2 ppg while connecting on 43.7 percent of their total shots. Henderson hasn't been a particularly efficient scorer for the Rebels, connecting on just 38.3 percent from the field, but he has shown an ability to hit shots from just about everywhere on the floor. Murphy Holloway (14.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg) is a solid contributor on the interior as he is the leading rebounder for the Rebels, who rank second in the SEC on the boards. Like Holloway, Reginald Buckner (9.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.7 bpg) is a force in the paint with his ability to score, rebound and block shots.

Florida was facing a 10-point deficit early in the second half of its semifinal-round clash with Alabama. However, the Gators turned that 37-27 deficit into a five-point lead by ripping off a 15-0 run midway through the period. The Gators would never trail again as they hit 48 percent from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line over the final 20 minutes.

The Gators (71.9 ppg) may not be as potent a scoring team as Ole Miss, but they have been a team that can score at will thanks to their impressive efficiency at the offensive end. Florida leads the SEC in assists (15 apg) and field goal percentage (.484). Billy Donovan's squad is also air-tight on defense, ranking in the top-three nationally in scoring yield (53.3 ppg) and opponent field goal percentage (.374). Kenny Boynton (12.3 ppg, 3.0 apg) had struggled to muster just 11 points in the previous two games, but bounced back with a 16-point effort against Alabama. Mike Rosario (12.1 ppg), Erik Murphy (12.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Patric Young (10.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) are also solid scorers for the Gators, while Scottie Wilbekin (9.1 ppg, 5.0 apg) has made big contributions as a facilitator.

Cemetery puts brakes on NASCAR-themed headstone

Jason Carr's headstone (Andrew Laker/AP Photo/The Republic)

A Catholic church has put the brakes on a headstone designed with the NASCAR logo.

Sharon Carr, to honor her late husband, Jason Carr, had a a headstone built in the shape of a couch and decorated with images of a dog, a deer, and NASCAR and Indianapolis Colts logos to represent his interests. But according to the Daily Mail, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Indianapolis has refused to let the headstone in, saying it doesn?t meet the requirements of the century-old cemetery.

In turn, Carr is now suing St. Joseph, arguing that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis Properties Inc., which owns the cemetery, never produced any guidelines for headstones until a year after she wanted to add the $9,600 monument. Her husband died in a car accident in 2009.

The Rev. Jonathan Meyer, priest at St. Joseph, disputes this, telling the Daily Mail, ?They told her not to move forward with the purchasing of the monument, but she went ahead anyway.?

He added, ?We have consistently communicated the same message prior to the purchase and after the purchase. We did not think a granite couch was an appropriate monument in our historic cemetery.?

The church, Meyer added, doesn't want a monument that is "secular in nature. ... Faithful Christians know rules and regulations are set up so there can be good for everyone."

The church's decision has apparently caused debate among churchgoers. Sharon Carr's father-in-law, Henry Carr, told the Daily Mail, "I'm told the controversy is splitting the church apart, tearing it in half. But I guess that's what has to be done."

Old Directory Listing: Hay Edwd.Massey,50Princes' sq.BayswtrW ...

Princes' Square, Bayswater, London.

50 Princes? Square, Bayswater, London.

I?ve just been in West London and so I took the opportunity of a bit of leisure time to find the house where my great-great grandfather lived for a time. This was in Bayswater, way back in 1880.

Having fired up my reluctant computer, something to do with the Firefox update I think (which was making it use 99 to 100% of its cpu to do something or other!) I headed over to TheGenealogist.co.uk and searched their old directories data base.

In the Kelly?s Post Office 1880 Court Directory I found an entry for Edward Adolphe Massey Hay as:

Hay Edwd.Massey,50Princes? sq.BayswtrW?

I smiled as I noticed that he had lost one of his middle names in the listing as this is something that happens to me all the time!

Switching then to the old maps website http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html I located the street just north of the intersection of Palace Court and Moscow Road in South Bayswater.

I then wrapped up warm, got out my A-Z and set off with digital camera to find, photograph and generally get an impression of the surroundings that once my great-great grandfather had called home.

The house was now part of a hotel and was one of a road of houses all designed to look the same, with at least 5 stories above the ground floor and a strange protruding 4 story frontage above their front doors.

I love walking down streets that my ancestor?s have pounded in their time. As I do it I try to imagine what it must have been like in their times when the motor car would not have claimed the street outside their front steps, transistor radios would not have been blaring and the aeroplanes flying overhead would not have been heard. Instead the clip clop of hansom cabs, that prevailed until 1908, would have been in their place.

Princes' Square garden.

Princes? Square garden.

Around the back I discovered a pleasant communal garden of the sort that is common in London and noticed that the design of the rear of the property was much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

If you would like to try to find your ancestor?s in the London Directories then check out the data sets at TheGenealogist.co.uk

China: 900 Dead Pigs In Shanghai River - Business Insider

China 900 dead pigs shanghai

CCTV / Weibo

A report published in China Daily reveals that over 900 dead pigs were found in a river near Shanghai on Saturday afternoon.

Perhaps even more alarming, local officials seem at a loss as to what killed the pigs, or even where they came from.

The dead pigs were found in the Songjiang River. While the river does provide drinking water for Shanghai, officials have said they don't believe the water quality has been effected.

The pork industry in China is strategically important (the country even has a "pork reserve" to battle inflation), but there have been widespread concerns about water quality in recent years.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has posted images of the clean up effort to Weibo.

(AP) ? No need to say goodbye to Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She's staying put as a co-host of "The View" despite reports insisting otherwise.

Series co-creator Barbara Walters called that story "particularly false" on Monday's edition of the ABC daytime talk show. She says that "we have no plans for Elisabeth to leave."

She also denied reports that Hasselbeck has lost favor with "The View" for her conservative political stances, something Walters says "we value and appreciate."

Hasselbeck has been on "The View" for a decade.

Walters also confirmed that Joy Behar will exit the show in August. Behar was among the first co-hosts with Walters when "The View" debuted in 1997. She announced her planned departure last week.

Besides Walters, the remaining panel includes Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd.
