Five best features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

1 hr.

Google announced Jelly Bean, also known as Android 4.1, on Wednesday. The shiny new operating system brings new features such as a speedier interface, a new Camera app, offline voice typing, significantly improved notifications, a Siri-like voice search, Google Now and more.?Here are the features we've enjoyed using the most so far.

Project Butter
There's been a lot of talk about something called "Project Butter" during the Google I/O developers conference?and unsurprisingly the whole thing doesn't have anything to do with dairy products. Instead it's what Google has labeled the under-the-hood improvements which keep?Jelly Bean running ??I couldn't resist this line, I'm sorry ??like butter.

Buffering tweaks, increased frame rates, a system which keeps rendering and touch input events in sync better, and touch prediction come together to make everything run just a little bit more nicely. (Yes, Jelly Bean actually?tries to predict where you'll touch the screen next.)

It's tough to tell how much of a difference Project Butter will truly make, but based on a bit of time with a Nexus 7 tablet running Jelly Bean, it seems as if Jelly Bean runs more smoothly than prior Android versions. amd?it's important for Google to take steps to make the Android experience as smooth as possible.

Offline voice typing
How annoying is it when you can't dictate something to your phone because you don't have a cellular or Wi-Fi data connection? Jelly Bean makes this pesky issue a thing of the past with offline voice typing.

When your device has a poor data connection or no connection at all, voice-to-text tasks are crunched locally instead of in the cloud.?

So how good is it? Good enough and speedy enough. The reason that companies like Google and Apple put?voice recognition in the cloud in the first place is that it makes it easier to run your voice against thousands of samples in the blink of an eye. So it's no surprise that the offline voice-to-text is slightly less accurate than the cloud-based version, which has been my experience.

Google Now
I have a hunch that we'll be talking about Google Now a lot in the future. It's Google's attempt to predict what you'll need and get it to you before you even realize you need it. In theory, your device should learn your habits, interests and so on, and then offer up relevant traffic, weather and point-of-interest information.

I don't know whether it's the lousy Wi-Fi and cellular connection I get in this part of San Francisco or whether Google Now just has to get to know me better before taking charge of my life, but for whatever reason I am not being offered much information. We'll circle back and chat about this feature after I've used it more, but I'm willing to label it as one of Jelly Bean's best attributes?based on its potential alone.

Voice search
S-Voice, the Siri competitor included on the Samsung Galaxy S III, was a total letdown in my opinion, but?Google's handling things much better.

Google's voice search is now powered?by Knowledge Graph, meaning that you'll receive what Google deems to be the best?answer?to your query first, followed by relevant web results. In some quick tests, Google's voice search definitely made Siri look terrible, as the iOS-based assistant has a bad habit of simply offering to search teh web for you in situations where Google already has an answer.

Notifications
I may be an iOS fangirl who is so attached to her iPhone that she sleeps with it right next to her head, but even I have to admit that Google's definitely doing something right with notifications.

In Jelly Bean,?the notification bar can do more than ever. It can now expand, to show you a portion of your inbox, rather than just the number of emails waiting for you. (Yes, this is similar to one of the display options for email notifications in iOS, but those can't be compacted?with a touch.)

Google Now cards also appear in the notifications tray, meaning that you can view relevant information just by opening the notifications rather than having to switch apps.

The changes to notifications are small touches, but based on some time with a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, it's easy to see that the time and frustrations they'll save you will quickly add up.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Whisk And Foodity Both Raise Funds To Link Recipes To Grocery Stores

ikea-cookbook-recipe-ingredientsIt's been an interesting day for a developing market which seems so utterly niche as to be untrue. There really are startups out there linking recipes to supermarket so you can just buy the food you need to make the dishes. Niche, but potentially quite powerful. Two start-ups announced funding today in the UK. Whisk, a startup produced by a minor UK TV celebrity, has raised ?170,000 for a product that has yet to launch, while Foodity has secured over ?300,000 seed funding for a platform that's already being traded on and has customers after bootstrapping for two years.

Egypt's president-elect to rally Tahrir protesters

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of Islamists flowed into Cairo's Tahrir Square to hear Egypt's president-elect make his first public speech since declaring victory in a clear bid to rally popular support as he faces a struggle for power with the country's ruling generals.

Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood is the first Islamist and the first civilian to win the presidency, a job held for nearly three decades by Hosni Mubarak who was ousted by an uprising last year.

But he is already facing a serious challenge after the Mubarak-era military rulers who oversee the transition took a series of decisions undermining the powers of his office before his swearing-in, which was scheduled for Saturday.

His visit to Tahrir is also a nod to the protesters who supported his bid for leadership in a bitter campaign that pitted him against Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

Many protesters have called for Morsi to take the oath of office in the square, the epicenter of mass protests against Mubarak and later the continued military rule, but the ceremony was scheduled to be held Saturday before a high court.

His appearance in Tahrir a day before the official ceremony is clearly a nod to the calls for a popular oath.

Egyptians will be watching Morsi's statements to see whether he will accept the restrictions on his power or try to use his position as an elected president to force the military to lift them. His influence is hampered by a court decision that dissolved the country's first freely elected parliament, which was dominated by Islamists.

The ruling generals have promised to transfer power to an elected president by Sunday. But they also have given themselves sweeping powers that undercut the authority of the president. The constitutional declaration ? issued days before the winner of a runoff vote was announced ? also designated the generals the country's legislature in place of the disbanded parliament.

Protesters ? mainly Islamists but also including some of the liberal and secular activists who spearheaded the revolution against Mubarak ? took to the streets to demand that the generals rescind the declaration and reinstate the parliament.

Morsi's spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the president-elect wants to stand with the thousands who have camped in the square for over a week to express concern about the power grabs.

"He wants to confirm that people are the source of his power," Ali said. "He wants to show unity with his people over issues of the transition, which is now ending."

The generals say the moves were designed to fill a power vacuum and ensure that the president doesn't monopolize decision-making until a new constitution is drafted.

They have already said the current head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi will be the new defense minister.

Many protesters already have complained that Morsi's agreement to be sworn in before a high court was a concession to the military. Traditionally, such ceremonies are held before parliament, which currently doesn't exist.

"We demand from the president of the republic that he calls off the constitutional declaration, reinstate the parliament as it was, and to stand here among us to be sworn in and swear he has all his powers," said a preacher in the square who addressed the crowd before Morsi arrived.

"From now on, we make our demands to the president of the republic, not the military council. The military council no longer rules Egypt."

Protesters in the square chanted, "The military council should leave tonight," and, "The president takes the oath in the square." Similar protests also were held in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, and other cities.

A podium was set up in Tahrir for Morsi's speech, and the area was secured by the Republican guards. It was in the first time in the past 16 months that security forces have returned to protecting the square while rallies are held.

Ali said Morsi's agreement to take oath before the court does not mean the battle to regain his powers is over.

"This is an affirmation that (Morsi) respects the law and constitution," he said. "It doesn't mean approval of the declaration."

Speaking to newspapers editors Thursday, Morsi said discussions continued over how to on how to implement the law dissolving the parliament. The court decision declared a third of the elected seats unconstitutional and Brotherhood lawyers argue it is still possible to only dissolve that third.

"We should be patient with one another, two, three or four years, and try to live together in this atmosphere of freedom and democracy after the revolution," he said, according to comments published in the state-run Al-Ahram daily. "This is definitely a better atmosphere than before. But there are big challenges."

Morsi, the first elected Islamist leader of an Arab country, is also trying to reach out to many of the liberal and secular forces that were behind the uprising. They, along with Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, fear Morsi would work to establish a religious state. Most of those groups are not participating in the protests, although one prominent youth group the April 6 movement has joined the rally on Tahrir Square.

Morsi is consulting to form a unity government, which he promised won't be led by a Brotherhood member.

In the two-hour meeting with the editors, Morsi also dismissed worries that he would work to "Islamize" Egypt according to the Brotherhood vision. He said it was not possible.

"It is impossible to shake the pillars of the state in any direction. I am a president for all Egyptians," he said.

Before heading to Tahrir Square on Saturday, Morsi prayed in Al-Azhar mosque, a symbolic acknowledgement of respect to Sunni world's most prestigious learning institution.

Nowadays, exit signs can be found in many buildings and most of the people have understood their importance. Their importance is highly felt because they enable people to find their way to safely exit a building in the case of any emergency. However, some people are not aware of their working. A radioactive and gaseous element of hydrogen known as Tritium is stored in the glass tube inside each sign for illuminating them. This glass tube is contained in a block of plastic and when it breaks due to one reason or another, there are chances of gas in the signs to leak and they can stay for long enough in the air in such a way inhaling the gas cannot be avoided. Therefore, companies that are looking for safer alternatives can opt for photoluminescent egress signage.

Nowadays, manufacturers are offering some light that can glow in dark. Reason behind this is that these models are less expensive and they can last longer. Normal signs can last for a lifespan of eight to ten years, while glow in dark signs can last for 25 years thereby offering long-term solutions for companies that are looking for suitable models for installing in their offices. When this model is used, they need not frequently install new signs thereby saving some money. Since these models do not require any electrical wiring, they can further save some money to the users. Now, the question that might be arising in your mind would be how glow in dark signs work without electricity, the answer is that they actually operate by absorbing light from ambient light sources like fluorescent or halogen bulbs. Once the light is absorbed, they shine brightly when the surroundings are dark. Since they use neither electricity nor batteries, expenses to be made for battery replacement and for hiring a professional for replacement of batteries can be avoided thereby further saving some money to the businessmen.

Therefore, glow in dark signs can offer more benefits to the companies in the form cost saving and in the form of safety features. In addition, they are also environmental friendly and according to an estimation, it is found that when a company replaces 100 traditional signs with 100 glow in dark signs, it can prevent nearly half a million pounds of carbon dioxide from being released to the environment. Above all, electricity bill of the companies can also be greatly minimized. Nowadays, many dealers are offering different forms of exit signs for people to select from.

In Age of Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, House Hearing Tackles Online ...

If there?s one thing everyone can agree on about today?s communications laws, it's that they?re woefully out of date. Crafted years before Netflix, Google or Apple offered video programming on the Internet, the laws regulating cable and satellite TV and TV broadcasting say nothing about their new competitors.

Now, in addition to the dispute between pay TV providers and broadcasters over carriage deals, there are emerging issues for online video providers like Netflix that depend on Internet service providers like the cable systems for their distribution.

During the future of video hearing before a House subcommittee Wednesday, lawmakers heard from an all-star panel of execs representing the old and new in TV video services, touching on a broad range of issues.
.
?The Federal Communications Commission regulates based on a bygone era,? said Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. Walden specifically referred to the 1992 Cable Act, when cable TV controlled 98 percent of the pay TV market. Today, that?s dropped to 53 percent. ?It was meant to spur competition and it worked. But the act does not apply to YouTube, iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Roku and Sky Angel.?

The hearing comes amid reports that the Dept. of Justice has opened up an antitrust investigation into whether cable companies are using broadband data caps to steer consumers to their own Internet video services and discourage, by pricing, the usage of video services not controlled by the cable company. It?s been a pet issue of Netflix, which has accused Comcast of doing just that.

?When you couple limited broadband competition with a strong desire to protect a legacy video distribution business, you have both the means and motivation to engage in anti-competitive behavior,? David Hyman, Netflix?s general counsel, told lawmakers. ?Add to this mix a regulatory and legislative framework largely crafted before the modern Internet era, and you have the makings for confusion and gamesmanship.?

Taking on the attacks, Michael Powell, former FCC commissioner and president and CEO of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, called accusations that the cable industry is involved in any effort to stop Netflix and others is ?flatly wrong and belied by the facts.?

?Netflix is the largest provider of subscription video in the country,? Powell said. ?We sell broadband. Their services help stimulate the services we sell.?

Dish Network?s chairman Charlie Ergen has never been shy about his continuing dissatisfaction with rules that he says give broadcasters the edge in retransmission negotiations. He used the hearing to open those old rules and defend Auto Hop, a technology that has enraged broadcasters because it allows its subscribers to automatically skip all commercials during prime-time programming.

Sky Angel, which recently lost access to distribute CSPAN and Discovery over its Internet video service, argued for some of the protections regulations give cable operators but not others.

?Everybody wants a little better deal, the other guy?s deal,? noted Walden.

Lawmakers will need more than one hearing to figure out which rules should be tossed or if new ones should be written.

?I know it?s too late to do a bill in this Congress," said Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tex). ?In general, I think we need less regulation than more. I look forward to big things happening in the next Congress, but it has to be done in a bipartisan basis.?

Court upholds EU antitrust decision against Microsoft, reduces fine slightly to $1.07 billion

Court upholds EU antitrust decision against Microsoft, reduces fine slightly to $107 billion

Europe's second-highest court has finally denied Microsoft's 2008 appeal of its 899 million euro ($1.35 billion) EU antitrust fine, while reducing the award to 860 million euros ($1.07 billion). If you can't remember that far back, Redmond was hit with the penalty for delaying information about its operating system to rival companies, impeding their progress in competing with the software giant. It's not known if a further appeal is possible, but we suspect that the company won't give up if it's got any options -- it's not exactly pocket change we're talking about.

Flaming Lips Reveal Guests For World-Record Road Trip

During O Music Awards, 'Jackass' star Chris Pontius, Neon Trees and Jackson Browne will join the Lips as they try to land Guinness spot.

It's no secret that the Flaming Lips have their sights set on the Guinness World Record for most concerts performed in multiple cities in a 24-hour time period. The innovative rockers have just announced they will be joined by "Jackass" and "Wildboyz" star Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, Neon Trees, Karmin and a slew of additional artists as they gun for the record, currently held by Jay-Z, who played seven shows from Atlanta to L.A. in 2006.

The Flaming Lips and friends plan to play eight shows from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans, beginning Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET and continuing for 24 hours. The gigs will take place in conjunction with the O Music Awards, a 24-hour awards ceremony that will be broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT and livestream at Omusicawards.com. The Flaming Lips will jump aboard their aptly named bus, "Endeavor," and travel to each new location just as the opening band is finishing its set. They'll perform what promises to be a raucous and exciting mini-set before moving on to the next location.

The O Music Awards ceremony will give out 24 awards, one for each hour of the festival. Categories that artists are vying to win include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award.

"The O Music Awards are all about the celebrating the wonderfully messy and soulful spirit of music," said Van Toffler, President of Viacom's Music and Logo Group. "This insane bus brigade and the assorted collection of artists and pranksters that are taking part not only make me incredibly happy, but pretty much sum up what a good 24 hour binge should involve, minus the libations."

Along with the pomp and circumstance of winning awards, the first 12 installments of Stop/Watch will air during the concerts. Stop/Watch is a 60-second online music series in which artists have one minute flat to perform a complete song — with a countdown clock running! The first 12 Stop/Watch artists are: Joseph Arthur, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Citizen's Band, John Forte, the Hives, Rhett Miller, Miracles of Modern Science, Peasant, Punch Brothers, Saint Motel, P.T. Walkley and the Wombats.

Tickets to all of the O Music Awards shows can be purchased here. You can also catch the show live on your smart phone through the mobile web or the MTV News app.

Here's the full lineup of shows:

» 6/27 - New Fumes, the Flaming Lips: Memphis, TN @ Handy Park
» 6/27 - Gary Clark Jr., the Flaming Lips: Clarksdale, MS @ Ground Zero Blues' Club
» 6/27 - Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, the Flaming Lips: Oxford, MS @ The Lyric

Groundbreaking partnership seeks rapid cure to reduce treatment time from 6 months to 1 month

Seven pharmaceutical companies and four research institutions, working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have launched a groundbreaking partnership that aims to speed the discovery of essential new treatments for tuberculosis (TB).

The partnership, known as the TB Drug Accelerator (TBDA), will target the discovery of new TB drugs by collaborating on early-stage research. The long-term goal of the TBDA is to create a TB drug regimen that cures patients in only one month. Existing drugs, all at least 50 years old, require six months to cure the disease a lengthy process that contributes to 20-30% of patients dropping out before completion.

Aided by nearly $20 million from the Gates Foundation, partners officially launched the TBDA in April and have begun the first round of screening for new TB drug candidates. The TBDA aims to develop five new preclinical drug candidates with treatment-shortening potential within 5 years and proof-of-concept for a one-month three-drug regimen within 10 years.

"The TB Drug Accelerator establishes a new paradigm of cooperation in drug discovery," said Sanofi Chief Executive Officer Chris Viehbacher, speaking on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry partners. "By working together on this, we can optimize our research and speed the development of one of the most pressing needs in global health."

Through this partnership, the participating pharmaceutical companies -- Abbott, AstraZeneca, Bayer, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck and Sanofi will open up targeted sections of their compound libraries and share data with each other and four research institutions: the Infectious Disease Research Institute; the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health; Texas A&M University; and Weill Cornell Medical College. Breaking from traditional research and development practices, the companies will work together to develop the best prospects, regardless of where the drug originated. The structures of lead compounds identified through the program will ultimately be placed in the public domain.

"TB drug discovery has reached a crossroads," said Dr. Carl Nathan, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College. "Finding new and faster-acting TB drugs will take a new kind of partnership, connecting not only academia and industry, but drug company with drug company. The TB Drug Accelerator is a historic experiment in innovative collaboration."

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that attacks the respiratory system and other organs. It is the second leading infectious cause of death worldwide, having killed nearly 1.4 million people in 2010 alone. At any given moment, more than 12 million people around the world are suffering from active TB.

The high percentage of patients who fail to complete the current six-month treatment regimen adds significantly to the TB burden. High default rates lead to increased mortality, contribute to TB drug resistance and allow patients to continue to infect others. Shortening treatment regimens to even two months would keep an additional one million people on treatment each year.

"Innovative partnerships are critical to helping us solve the most pressing challenges of global health," said Trevor Mundel, president of the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "It's our hope that the TB Drug Accelerator will set a precedent for drug discovery and serve as a resource for others."

The TBDA will add to existing collaborative efforts on TB, building a more robust drug discovery pipeline to complement other initiatives, such as Critical Pathways to TB Drug Regimens (CPTR), which works with the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development to speed the clinical development of new combination TB drug therapies.

Here really are a few steps you can take to expose your company to potential new clients that function today, but might not in a couple of years.

SEO. Search motor optimization. For the web entrepreneur who desires their website to become a success, this is the initial step toward making certain success. Unless you?ve unlimited money with which to market your item, this is really a step you can?t afford in order to skip. Optimizing your site is the same as building your own brick-and-mortar store inside a major buying district instead of halfway lower a grime road by having an old rustic sign pointing within the other path. Its importance can?t be overstated. There tend to be many aspects to SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION, and insufficient room in the following paragraphs to enter them. Fortunately, few topics happen to be as exhaustively discussed. Do the Google search of your, and you will discover plenty to see.

Pay For each Click. This is actually another fine method to get your online business away and operating. This service emerges by Search engines, Yahoo!, and WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER, to name several. With Search engines AdWords, you?re going to achieve the most possible traffic, but you may even have probably the most competition for top keywords. What will this imply? Well, AdWords (and also the others) function by allowing you to create a good advertisement (generally a heading and a few sentences). You after that must pick the keywords which will activate your own ad. Then a person place the bid how much you?re prepared to ppc of your own ad, depending upon each key phrase. It just about all sounds much more confusing than it?s. The advantage of this kind of advertising (instead of, say, banner marketing), is you simply pay if you have been ensured of the visitor. Of program, what you need to do with which visitor is your decision and your personal marketing abilities.

Articles and backlinks. Next in order to SEO, this may be the most powerful portion of strategy for that rising internet business proprietor. In order to maneuver up within the search engine rank, you should have incoming hyperlinks (back links, as they?re called within the SEO globe). When the various search engines see an internet site with lots of natural backlinks, they start to see the website being an authority upon whatever subject the website is regarding. Thus, the site?s position begins to enhance. There tend to be many methods to go regarding getting back links, but among the best ways is actually through writing and submitting articles. There tend to be article ?farms? on the web, which web host your articles free of charge and after that sell all of them or present them to other site owners, who tend to be hungry with regard to content. This advantages you because at the conclusion of the content you?ll have included your own name along with a link aimed at your website. Every period someone holds your article to place on their own website, you obtain another essential link.

There really are a million successful techniques for making money online, but they are the three foundations. Go as well as research all of them, and your company would be the better for this.

Clint Bowyer picks up 1st win of season at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) ? Clint Bowyer knew he could get to Victory Lane this season, his first with Michael Waltrip Racing.

He just didn't think it would be on a road course.

Bowyer picked up his first win with his new team Sunday by holding off Kurt Busch on the winding 1.99-mile road course at Sonoma. Although Bowyer finished fourth three previous times on this road course, his background is on dirt tracks and this style of racing isn't his strong suit.

So the irony of winning Sunday wasn't lost on Bowyer.

"To have this dirt boy from Kansas at Victory Lane on a road course is big, trust me," Bowyer said. "I saw Jeff Gordon, he's sitting there on the wall, he's won this race many times, he's a champion of this sport and I just beat him. I passed Jeff Gordon, and you have no idea, a young racer from Kansas, you don't forget stuff like that."

Bowyer dominated by leading 71 of the 112 laps. Defending race winner Busch, in an unsponsored car, was all over the bumper of Bowyer's Toyota late and got a final shot at taking the win away when caution flew with four laps remaining.

Only Busch damaged his car with roughly eight laps to go, and he worried the entire caution period whether his Chevrolet was ruined and had no chance of catching Bowyer through the two-lap overtime sprint to the finish.

Bowyer raced side-by-side with Busch at the green flag, then cleared Busch and pulled away for the win.

"Kurt raced me clean, he bumped me and roughed me up, but never did anything to jeopardize either one of us," Bowyer said.

Bowyer, who left Richard Childress Racing at the end of last season to join MWR, had to walk to Victory Lane to celebrate with his new crew after his car ran out of gas.

"I'm super excited for everybody involved," Bowyer said. "To switch teams like I did was a huge risk and a chance for me, and it was a chance to showcase my talents.

"I've had good teammates and good stuff before, but never like this. This is a young group, Michael stuck it out and I'm telling you, he's fixing to reap the benefits. He's worked hard."

It was a strong day all-around for MWR, which got a fourth-place finish from Brian Vickers, who was back to NASCAR after racing last weekend at Le Mans. Martin Truex Jr. led 15 laps, and was running in the top 10 until a late-race incident dropped him to 22nd.

"Everybody is just working together," Bowyer said. "That's something we are very proud of."

Tony Stewart passed Busch on the final lap to claim second, but said it was because Busch's car was struggling.

"Every time he would go in the corner, the rear end would shift, and it was running him to the outside of the track on entry and it was screwing his corner up," Stewart said. "Kind of got it by default there to a certain degree. Once we got by there, we just were not close enough in that last lap to get to Clint."

Busch wound up third. He was emotional after ? Busch missed Pocono earlier this month because he was suspended by NASCAR for verbally abusing a media member ? and said he was thrilled to compete for the win in an underfunded, unsponsored Phoenix Racing car.

"It's an amazing day, when you can do what we did," Busch said. "I'm a little choked up because A: We were in position. B: I was very considerate to Bowyer, who was going for his first win with the new team. And then C: which is most important, I made a mistake, I got into those tires in turn 11."

Busch, who has struggled with his temper on and off the track, saw a silver lining in his strong finish.

"If I can get my head on straight here, and after the race, then I could be able to race every weekend and go for victories," Busch said.

Vickers was fourth for MWR, followed by Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.

Greg Biffle was seventh, followed by pole-sitter Marcos Ambrose, AJ Allmendinger and Joey Logano.

Most everyone believed the race would be a runaway win for either Ambrose or Gordon, but neither really contended.

Ambrose led the first 11 laps before plummeting through the field, and said the setup on his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford was just off.

"We really missed it," he said. "We missed it bad, and we did good to recover and get a top-10 out of it. We will take it and move on. We got the pole and had a lot of speed; we just missed it for the race.

"We were slow. It was just terrible. We had no speed in the car and we paid the price."

Gordon led one time for 13 laps before running out of gas as he was headed in for a scheduled pit stop.

There were only two cautions ? the fewest in track history for the Sprint Cup Series ? and so the race never shaped into the demolition derby most expected. Recent races on the 1.99-mile course had brought out road rage from drivers impatient to gain track position at a place with few passing zones.

It was never an issue on Sunday, though.

"I was happy about it," Stewart said. "Not having all of those cautions made it fun because you could actually race guys one-on-one a lot today versus, you know, having to worry about getting those big packs and big groups and having to worry about whether you're going to get run over or not."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who ended his four-year losing streak last week at Michigan, failed to meet his goal of grabbing his first career top-10 at Sonoma. He was 15th on the final restart, but was stacked in traffic and spun, dropping him to 23rd.

"We had a good car, we've had better cars here, and we struggled all weekend," he said. "We hung around and were going to finish in the top-15, and on green-white-checkered, there are going to be some victims."

Md. Teens Rebuild Vt. Homes Destroyed By Irene ? CBS Baltimore

WEST HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) ? A group of Maryland teenagers is helping rebuild two Vermont homes nearly destroyed last year by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene.

The group calls itself DreamBuilders, and the members came to the White River Junction area from churches and synagogues in the Baltimore area.

One of two homes they are helping to rebuild belongs to Linda and Randy Hart in West Hartford, across Route 14 from the White River.

When Irene struck, the family fled a birthday party for the Harts? grandson. When they returned, the house looked like a ruin.

?The muck and mud were everywhere, his presents were strewn all over, the outside toys were gone, the walls were missing,? Linda Hart said.

On Thursday, Linda Hart watched as new exterior walls rose from what was, on Monday, just a foundation. She told Vermont Public Radio the teenagers were making a dream out of what was once a nightmare.

?It?s been 10 months of being basically homeless, you know, begging off friends and family, so this is great,? she said.

John McBeth, an adult leader of DreamBuilders, said the teenagers gain as much as they give touring the country helping people rebuild after disasters.

?People have been honking their horns driving by all day,? he said. ?Someone wanted to bring us a pizza, but our meals are all set. The outpouring of love we are getting from this community is what makes it all worthwhile.?

DreamBuilders heard about the damage from Irene, and contacted COVER Home Repair, a White River Junction-based nonprofit agency. COVER?s director Rob Schultz said the volunteers brought not only labor, but money.

?And of course that?s the real stumbling block for so many of the Irene homeowners, is that in spite of everything they do not have the money to move forward,? said Schultz.
