Bucks 117, Pistons 90 - NBA News | FOX Sports on MSN

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP)

After Milwaukee's reserves helped turn things around, Brandon Jennings turned the game into a rout.

Jennings scored 20 of his 30 points in the third quarter as the Bucks cruised to a 117-90 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Mike Dunleavy had 17 points and Monta Ellis added 14 for the Bucks, who rallied from a 15-point first-quarter deficit to take a 10-point lead at halftime. The Milwaukee reserves outscored Detroit's 59-41, including 28-10 in the key second quarter.

''We got a ton of energy from our second unit to help us get back into the game - that really set the tone and got everybody's blood going a little,'' Milwaukee coach Jim Boylan said. ''And then Brandon came out and what can you say about that third quarter? Just `wow'.''

Jennings, considered a possibility to replace injured Boston guard Rajon Rondo at the All-Star game, certainly didn't hurt his chances against Detroit. At one stretch in the third period, he hit four straight 3-pointers while accounting for all of the scoring during the Bucks' 16-0 run that gave them an 85-56 lead.

''We were just really aggressive in that quarter,'' Jennings said. ''Our bigs gave us everything they had, and that gave us some unbelievable intensity.''

Jennings finally cooled down late in the third, throwing up an air ball while going for his sixth 3 of the period, but he just laughed off the ensuing chant from what was left of a tiny Palace crowd.

''We know that a guy like Brandon Jennings, who has been struggling a little, was going to come out and try to play at a high level tonight,'' said Pistons coach Lawrence Frank. ''He just turned the game into a show in the third quarter, and we couldn't do anything to stop it.''

Rookie Andre Drummond had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Detroit, while Greg Monroe scored 14 points. Drummond became just the second teenager to have an 18-18 game since 1985-86, joining Dwight Howard.

Detroit, which hopes to make a run at the playoffs now that Boston has lost Rondo, won't have a shot if they play many more games like Tuesday's.

''It was a strange game,'' the Pistons' Charlie Villanueva said. ''We came out playing really well for the first 10 or 11 minutes, and after that it was all downhill. They turned it up, and we just collapsed.''

After taking a 28-13 lead with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter, the Pistons were outscored 77-35 over the next nearly 25 minutes. Milwaukee had a 33-14 scoring edge in the second period, including Samuel Dalembert tipping in a missed free throw that had been taken with 0.1 seconds left.

''The worst part about that play was that it was Milwaukee's third offensive rebound off a missed free throw in the first half,'' Frank said. ''I'm not sure I've ever seen that before. We had a chance to get up big, but they started playing harder than we did, and that changed the whole personality of the game.''

Things got even worse in the third quarter as Jennings helped the Bucks stretch their lead to 29 with 3:42 remaining in the period.

Detroit's defensive effort disappeared at that point, leading to a particularly ugly sequence in the fourth. Dalembert got open for back-to-back uncontested dunks in a half-court set, with John Henson making it three in a row on the next possession.

''When someone comes out firing like Brandon did in the third quarter, I think it takes a lot of life out of the other team,'' Boylan said. ''He's been doing that a lot for us lately.''

NOTES: Dunleavy had a four-point play as part of his 14-point second quarter. ... The Pistons had beaten Milwaukee in both meetings this season. ... The Pistons honored NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski at halftime. Keselowski is from Rochester Hills, only a few miles from the Palace. ... Howard had three games of at least 18 rebounds and 18 points at the age of 19.

APNewsBreak: EPA moves to ban some rodent poisons

(AP) ? The Environmental Protection Agency is moving to ban the sale of a dozen rat and mouse poisons sold under the popular D-Con brand in an effort to protect children and pets.

The agency said Wednesday it hopes to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures that occur every year from rodent-control products. Children and pets are at risk for exposure because the products typically are placed on floors.

The agency had targeted a handful of companies two years ago, saying they needed to develop new products that are safer for children, pets and wildlife. All but Reckitt Benckiser Inc., manufacturer of D-Con, did so.

The company will have at least 30 days to request a hearing before an administrative law judge. If no hearing is requested, the ban will take effect.

Daimler truck layoffs coming in NC, SC, Ore.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Potentially large layoffs loom at Daimler Trucks factories in North America.

Daimler Trucks North America said Tuesday it was notifying production workers at its manufacturing plants in North Carolina, South Carolina, Oregon and Mexico under a law that requires notice two months ahead of mass layoffs. The company said it would provide details Thursday.

Among those plants is a Freightliner trucks plant in Cleveland, N.C. The company said a year ago that it was calling 1,100 workers there back to work because of improving demand in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Venezuela invokes old enemies during Chavez's absence

CARACAS (Reuters) - From would-be assassins to capitalist hoarders, Venezuela's government is jumping on any perceived threats from old enemies in what opponents see as a tactic to shore up support during socialist President Hugo Chavez's absence after cancer surgery.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, once widely viewed as an easy-going, more moderate figure, has been arguably as hard line and explosive as the boss while running the government since Chavez went to Cuba for surgery in December.

"Don't lower your guard against permanent conspirations by imperialism and the Venezuelan right wing!" the 50-year-old Maduro, who is Chavez's anointed dauphin, thundered to a crowd a few days ago in the latest of regular tirades against opponents.

With the usually garrulous and airwave-hogging Chavez out of public view since his December 11 operation, Maduro has done his best to fill the rhetorical void - never deviating from the old lines, although clearly lacking the president's charisma.

Just as Chavez did near-daily during his turbulent 14-year rule, Maduro and other government heavyweights have been firing salvoes at pro-opposition media, threatening businessmen with punishment for speculation and denouncing plots.

A Spanish newspaper's publication of a false photo of Chavez in hospital brought furious denunciations of the "necrophiliac right-wing" media's "evil-hearted" conspiring against Venezuela.

Blaming businessmen for causing price rises and shortages of some essential goods by hoarding, the government has sent inspectors into shops, warehouses and factories across Venezuela to root out evidence.

"It takes your breath away, the hate they have for the Venezuelan people," Maduro, who has met with business leaders to give them a face-to-face warning, said in one speech.

During the national sweep, authorities recently raided one warehouse to seize 9,000 metric tons (9,920 tons) of sugar intended to make Pepsi-Cola.

ASSASSINATION PLOT?

In the government's most dramatic accusation since Chavez's surgery, both Maduro and National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello alleged unidentified groups had entered Venezuela to kill them. No evidence has yet been given, prompting mockery from foes.

"It's a smokescreen so people talk of assassination plots rather than the crisis of governance in the country," opposition legislator Abelardo Diaz said.

Critics say Maduro's position as de facto leader is illegitimate, given that Chavez missed the swearing-in of his new government earlier this month. They want Chavez declared formally absent, which would lead to the naming of a caretaker president and new election within 30 days.

Maduro and other senior officials insist that Chavez, whose surgery was his fourth for a cancer first detected in his pelvic region in mid-2011, is on track to recover and will return soon.

They say political opponents who failed to topple Chavez earlier in his rule with street marches, a coup attempt and an oil strike are now delighting in his health woes and making illegal plans to grab power.

Maduro is a former bus driver and union activist who rose quickly through the ranks to become one of Chavez's most trusted allies and his foreign minister for six years.

He is bent on keeping unity in the ruling Socialist Party and on the surface at least he has achieved that - no mean feat given supposed rivalries among leaders of a movement that combines ideologues, ex-guerrillas, businessmen and career soldiers and that has been held together mainly by Chavez's personality.

Maduro and Cabello's attacks on foes keep party stalwarts focused on external threats and the need for unity. It is a tactic successfully used by Chavez, who has for years played on class prejudice and emphasized his own poor background to boost his support from the masses.

'OLIGARCHY'

"Look at the language they use, the pejorative words of an oligarchy that has never understood who we are," Maduro said in one speech, reminding red-clad "Chavista" supporters how opponents laugh at his humble roots.

"They say we must get rid of the 'little lieutenant' (Cabello) and the 'bus-driver,'" said the vice president, whom some middle-class opponents sneer at for his former job and lack of a university education.

One of Chavez's traditional whipping boys is the virulently anti-government Globovision TV network and it has again been hit with legal proceedings, this time for causing "anxiety" in its coverage of the president's health.

Although its news coverage is often breathless and strident - and private media have a blemished record in their partisan anti-Chavez coverage as well as suffering tough measures against them - Globovision insists the accusations are ridiculous.

"Every time the government is in trouble, or in a complicated situation, they try and censure us to distract public attention," said Globovision Vice President Carlos Zuloaga.

Certainly, Chavez's sickness has eclipsed public debate over crime, inflation and problems in public services, and there is anxiety on the streets at the secrecy over his precise state.

"No one's speaking clearly about this," said 27-year-old Caracas resident Lizbeth Sandoval. "They tell us about plans to kill Maduro and so on but they don't tell us how Chavez is. They don't even give us medical reports."

Maduro, balancing the continued militancy of the government he leads at least temporarily, did speak late last year with a senior U.S. official in a possible sign he would consider a rapprochement with the old enemy to the north.

Yet most see him as a chip off the old block.

"Replacing a leader who controlled power so tightly has two possible variations - negotiation or radicalization," said local political analyst Luis Vicente Leon. "If we assume Maduro is weaker than Chavez, there's a high risk his path is a radical one."

Pruett ties Haywood's record as Ganassi wins Rolex

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Humbled a year ago when both its cars failed to make the podium, Chip Ganassi Racing returned to the Rolex 24 at Daytona determined to pick up another victory watch.

An eyebrow-raising lineup change that involved Juan Pablo Montoya showed just how serious the team was about winning, and it delivered Sunday with its fifth win in 10 appearances in the prestigious sports car race. The victory was the fifth for lead driver Scott Pruett, tying Hurley Haywood's record for wins in the twice-around-the-clock race at Daytona International Speedway.

"Having gotten to know Hurley real well over the years by racing with him and just as a friend, and to have him there at the end was pretty special," Pruett said.

The winning team of three-time defending Grand-Am drivers Pruett and Memo Rojas, along with Montoya and IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball, making his Rolex debut, beat the Max Angelelli-led VelocityWW team by almost 22 seconds.

It was Montoya who closed out the win, driving the final stint and waging a strong battle in the final hour with defending champion AJ Allmendinger. Ganassi's No. 01 BMW Riley had a clear horsepower advantage, and once Montoya got past Allmendinger, the win was his for the taking.

But the Ganassi team figured it was four laps short on fuel, and Montoya needed to build a lead of at least 40 seconds to hold off Angelelli and Allmendinger when he was forced to stop for gas. The Colombian did it by turning laps close to qualifying pace, and breezed to his third Rolex victory.

"It was a lot of pressure; I thought we have a decent lead, we're just going to go out there and ride for two and a half hours," Montoya said. "And then you realize there's a caution and another caution and another caution, and with the way the rules are and the speed the car had, it's like you didn't want to get into a ... contest with anybody. You had to be smart about when you passed them.

"We were kind of concerned about the (Shank) car, what they were going to do with fuel because they told me they could make it until the end and that we were going to have to push, and we pushed like crazy and opened up a hell of a gap. It was fun."

Montoya's other two wins were with Pruett on the No. 01 car in 2007 and 2008, but he spent the last three years driving for the No. 02 Ganassi "star car" and came away empty-handed each time. When the Ganassi cars were left off the Rolex podium last season for the first time since 2005, team management went to work on the cars and setting up a lineup that gave them two chances to win.

Montoya admitted he thought the switch was "a weird move," but owner Chip Ganassi and team manager Mike Hull insisted it wasn't a demotion for the driver who has been stuck in a lengthy slump in his full-time NASCAR job.

Ganassi said the Montoya move was Hull's call, but he also questioned it when the decision was made.

"I read that as you did, and I asked him about it, and he said it was to balance the thing out," Ganassi said. "We needed to balance it out. We also had Charlie Kimball in that car, and we wanted to give those guys every opportunity to win, as well, and we thought the 02 car was obviously very strong, and so we thought we had two good shots at it here."

The No. 02 car, driven by Indy 500 winners Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon, Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray and sports car ace Joey Hand, was strong until McMurray hit the wall exiting pit road following an early morning driver change. The damage to the steering may have contributed to the mechanical failure that knocked the car out of the race with four hours remaining.

"It's hard. This is different than crashing in a regular event," McMurray said. "When it's just you, it's not the same as having three other teammates and the amount of people we've had down here for testing. It is very embarrassing, very humbling, very heartbreaking to be the guy that does that. You don't want to be that guy."

In all, Ganassi's two cars combined to lead an overwhelming majority of the 709 laps. The No. 01 team led 421 laps in a race that had 24 drivers combine for a record 77 lead changes.

But the attention was on Montoya, who is clearly under pressure to perform this year, the final year of his contract with Ganassi.

"I think you always race for your job. It's normal," Montoya shrugged.

He stepped up Saturday and Sunday as the No. 01 team had to balance out Kimball's inexperience. It was the first time racing in a car with a roof on it for Kimball, who has diabetes and uses his fight with the disease as his platform.

"Having these guys as teammates takes a heck of a lot off my shoulders because I knew that I could settle in, and as long as I was smart and didn't make too many big mistakes and kept us in the race, they'd put us in a position to win at the end," said Kimball, who had one turn in the car for two late-night stints.

The Chevrolet team of Angelelli, defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jordan Taylor finished second for team owner Wayne Taylor ? redemption after an engine failure 22 minutes in last year's event ended the team's day. But Angelelli was bothered by engine restrictions to their Chevy that gave the Ganassi BMW's a clear power advantage.

"We have something restricted, OK? Just like driving with handcuffs; you can't do it, can't drive," he said. "Montoya and the 01 car is another league, is an A class. We are B class."

Defending race winner Michael Shank Racing twice came back from seven laps down to finish third in a Ford. It was a disappointing finish for team owner Shank, but a moral victory considering the hole the team clawed out of to make it to the podium.

Allmendinger, racing at Daytona for the first time since NASCAR suspended him for failing a random drug test hours before the July race here, teamed with fellow NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose, IndyCar driver Justin Wilson and Grand-Am regulars John Pew and Ozz Negri for the finish.

Ambrose was added to last year's winning lineup after Negri broke his leg a month ago during offseason training, but Negri was able to return to the car this weekend for limited driving duties a mere six days after his cast was removed.

"We were saying that on the way over, John and I, how if you'd have told us after the first hour we could have a chance of finishing third, we would have been over the moon," Wilson said. "As we were on the podium, we were thinking, well, there's nothing quite like being first, but we just have to be grateful for the chance we had."

Audi Sport Customer Racing won the GT class in an Audi R8 with drivers Filipe Albuquergue, Oliver Jarvis, Edoardo Mortara and Dion von Moltke.

Guest Post: Baines & Ernst ? Helping People Out Of Debt Since 1996

?

Unmanageable debt can be an excruciating burden to carry alone and constantly trying to juggle creditors can be quite simply exhausting, especially if you aren?t entirely sure of how to handle the problem.

Professional debt management firms can provide an invaluable service, bringing expertise and much-needed relief to individuals unable to cope with their financial problems.

However, although many debt management firms do a first-class job, like any industry, there are a few whose standards are not as high as they should be. But with so many companies offering debt management services, how can you decide who you should trust?

Baines and Ernst ? part of the award-winning Paymex Group, have been providing debt management services since 1996 and, to date, have helped more than 140,000 people escape the pressures of debt. During this time, they have created professional relationships with more than 3,500 different creditors, making it potentially far smoother to try and negotiate a debt solution for individuals who are struggling to meet their commitments.

However, their longstanding history and excellent track record in helping individuals is only part of the story.

In any kind of financial services, it can be comforting to discover that a company is willing to follow a voluntary code of conduct, which ensures not just quality of service, but commitment to ethical practices.

DEMSA ? the Debt Managers Standards Association ? is a perfect example of this. The organisation was established almost 12 years ago and was set up to protect the interests of all parties involved in debt management negotiations ? both the lenders and members of the public.

DEMSA?s own published mission statement declares that they aim to ?encourage the highest standards within the debt management industry? and that all members of the public must not only be treated ?ethically? but also ?compassionately and effectively.?

Any member company which belongs to DEMSA must ensure that the customer?s interests are paramount at all times and that solutions which would be unsuitable or inappropriate are not recommended. Information provided to the customer must be clear and transparent without the unnecessary use of jargon.

The Office of Fair Trading has recently published guidelines about what it expects from the industry, setting out good practice for companies involved in providing debt advice. DEMSA has a code of conduct that all of its members must rigorously adhere to and this has been given the seal of approval by the OFT.

A debt management firm must apply to belong to DEMSA and membership is dependent on several factors, but in particular, adherence to the code, both on application and for the duration. DEMSA will carry out audits to ensure that all member firms continue to comply with the requirements and will take steps to discipline or eject any firms found failing to meet the standards.

Therefore, for any individual seeking to find a reputable debt management firm where they can be assured of receiving the best possible advice, it?s recommended that they choose a DEMSA member such as Baines & Ernst.

Baines & Ernst has played a pivotal role in the financial industry ? helping people with all levels of debt find a way to conquer their financial troubles.

As part of the Paymex Group, their excellence in this area has been recognised formally when the group was awarded ?Debt Management Provider of the Year 2010? and 2011 and 2012 finalists, at the prestigious Insolvency and Rescue Awards.

Having unmanageable levels of debt can be a very difficult situation to deal with. By picking a company such as Baines and Ernst, who are accredited members of DEMSA, you can be sure you will receive a sympathetic response, as well as the best practical help available, from the experts you really can trust.

Wine and Spirits Travel: Wine, Beer & Pigs in Traverse City

We had a full day of Traverse City exploring, eating and
drinking that started with a delicious breakfast at the Sweetwater Bistro in
the Grand Traverse Resort where we were enjoying our stay. My friend Lisa feasted on the
Salmon Eggs Benedict, while I was enthralled with the Cornflake-Crusted French
Toast.

It was a short meal as Michael Norton of the Traverse City Convention and Visitors
Bureau was waiting to take us around town for the day. ?I had met Mike on my
last trip here and was looking forward to catching up and seeing what he
had scheduled for us for the day.

The first stop was at L. Mawby, known for their sparkling
wines. I had visited them a few years ago, but was anxious to taste the latest.
The winery had expanded their collection as well as opening a patio for
tastings a year ago.

Larry Mawby took us through the selection, which includes: Blanc
de Blanc, a very good 100% chardonnay sparkling with a long finish; Cremant Classic,
made from vignoles grapes and aged for a bit of wood within the fruity taste;
Wet, a pinot gris and Riesling blend filled with apple notes; and the 2011
Reserve Pinot Gris, my favorite, is a combination of peach and citrus.

Our next stop was a catch all as far as Traverse City is
concerned. Black Star Farms refers
to itself as an ?agricultural destination.? Within this property you will find
an inn, a cafe, a store/tasting room for wines and spirits made on the premises
and a dairy that makes cheese.

We started at Black Star with the wine and I was again
impressed with the pinot gris of this area, this time in the 2011 Arcturos. The
Rieslings here are equally impressive, with my favorite being the medium dry. I?d
also give a big shoutout to the 10 Year Old Apple Brandy as well as the 2008
Accapella, one of the best ice wines I?ve had in awhile.

Before we left Black Star Farms we made a quick visit to the
shop next door to taste the Leelanau Raclette Cheese, which was quite good.

The Towne Plaza is
a fairly new, rather unique restaurant as its focus is on pork, specifically from
Mangalista Pigs.? They are dedicated to
fresh, local ingredients in the rather small menu and they got everything we
tasted just right. For Lisa, it was a burger made from ground Angus (house
smoked) and topped with pork belly and cheddar. ?Mike had a charcuterie plate and I went for
the pasta choice at the time, orecchiete with house-made sausage, broccolini,
tomato and spinach.

We saved dessert for Grand Traverse Pie Company where we shared slices that included one of the best ever -- the
Grand Traverse Cherry Crumb. I?m still dreaming about that one!

We soon found out that even Traverse City?s Right Brain Brewery has gotten
into the pig business, offering a Mangalista Pig Porter. This unique brew is
blended with the thigh and head of a smoked pig. ?

I?m glad I was able to capture Lisa?s ?priceless?
face when she first tasted it, though she did decide she liked the smoky taste
once the initial shock of what she was drinking wore off.

Mike took us back to the Grand Traverse Resort after Right
Brain. We were pretty worn out from a day of tasting and decided to stay in for
the night. In the morning we would be driving home, with a stopover in Grand Rapids for lunch.?

AP Interview: CERN chief firmer on 'God particle'

(AP) ? The world should know with certainty by the middle of this year whether a subatomic particle discovered by scientists is a long-sought Higgs boson, the head of the world's largest atom smasher said Saturday.

Rolf Heuer, director of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said he is confident that "towards the middle of the year, we will be there." By then, he said reams of data from the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border near Geneva should have been assessed.

The timing could also help Scottish physicist Peter Higgs win a Noble Prize, Heuer said in an interview with The Associated Press in the Swiss resort of Davos.

CERN's atom smasher helped scientists declare in July their discovery of a new subatomic particle that Heuer calls "very, very like" a Higgs boson, that promises a new realm of understanding the universe.

The machine, which has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, is being put to rest early this year. The data from it, however, takes longer to analyze.

"Suppose the Higgs boson is a special snowflake. So you have to identify the snowflake, in a big snowstorm, in front of a background of snowfields," Heuer said by way of analogy. "That is very difficult. You need a tremendous amount of snowfall in order to identify the snowflakes and this is why it takes time."

He said the standard model of particle physics describes only 5 percent of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.

To explain how subatomic particles, such as electrons, protons and neutrons, were themselves formed, Higgs and others in the 1960s envisioned an energy field where particles interact with a key particle, the Higgs boson.

The idea was that other particles attract Higgs bosons and the more they attract, the bigger their mass will be. But a big question remains: Is this new particle a variation of the Higgs boson, or the same as the Higgs boson that was predicted?

The phrase "God particle," coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman, is used by laymen, not physicists, more as an explanation for how the subatomic universe works than how it all started.

"Now, if there is a deviation in one of the properties of this Higgs boson, that means we open a new window, for example, hopefully into the part of the dark universe, the 95 percent of the unknown universe," said Heuer.

Is subatomic quest over? Stay tuned

The world should know with certainty by the middle of this year whether a subatomic particle discovered by scientists is a long-sought Higgs boson, the head of the world's largest atom smasher says.

Rolf Heuer, director of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said he is confident that "towards the middle of the year, we will be there." By then, he said reams of data from the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border near Geneva should have been assessed.

The timing could also help Scottish physicist Peter Higgs win a Nobel Prize, Heuer said in an interview with The Associated Press in the Swiss resort of Davos on Saturday.

The idea was that other particles interact with Higgs bosons, and the more they interact, the bigger their mass will be. But a big question remains: Is this new particle a variation of the Higgs boson, or the same as the single Higgs boson that was predicted?

The phrase "God particle," coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman, is used by laymen, not physicists, more as an explanation for how the subatomic universe works than how it all started.

"Now, if there is a deviation in one of the properties of this Higgs boson, that means we open a new window, for example, hopefully into the part of the dark universe, the 95 percent of the unknown universe," said Heuer.

"If you find the deviation," he added, "that means if it is not the ? but a ? Higgs boson, then we might find a fantastic window into the dark universe so we would make another giant leap from the visible to the dark."

Distribution: A Weak Link in Gun Control?

Adding to the complexity of the gun-control debate, a new study suggests that guns make their way into the hands of criminals partly because arms manufacturers don't use secure distribution channels for their products.?

Kevin D. Bradford, an associate professional specialist in marketing at the University of Notre Dame?s Mendoza College of Business, led the study of how guns were used in violent crimes and what kinds of safeguards gun manufacturers had in place for distribution.

?The gun industry is cloaked in secrecy,? Bradford said, ?We found that 1 percent of gun dealers are responsible for 45 to 60 percent of guns involved in crimes. These dealers divert new guns [that are] intended for responsible owners to those [people] that gun restrictions are meant to keep away from the weapons.?

Bradford?s research found that guns run through a secure distribution channel are less likely to be used in violent crimes. Yet, many gun manufacturers don?t take measures to safeguard distribution. Bradford believes that requiring such measures, such as distributor background checks, might help curb some of the gun violence occurring in the United States.

?When manufacturers implement safeguards in their distribution channels, their guns are not used as often in crime,? he says. ?If those marketing principles were put in place, dealers would be more discouraged from selling guns to the wrong people.?

Bradford believes that gun manufacturers should be held to the same level of accountability as their counterparts in other industries.

"If we can hold Hasbro accountable for choking hazards for children, it seems reasonable that we should be able to hold gun manufacturers accountable for their intermediaries who distribute to criminals," Bradford says.

Obama to name foreign policy aide McDonough as chief of staff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday will name veteran foreign policy aide Denis McDonough as his next White House chief of staff, replacing Jack Lew, as part of an overhaul of his senior staff, a White House official said.

Obama will announce the appointment of McDonough, who worked on Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and is now a deputy national security adviser, at 12:10 p.m. EST at the White House, the official said. McDonough had been widely tipped to succeed Lew after his nomination as Treasury secretary.

In a series of high-level staff changes, Obama will also announce that he is moving White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer to the job of senior adviser and replacing Pfeiffer with his deputy, Jennifer Palmieri.

Poll Finds Support For Deficit Reduction, Opposition To Spending Cuts

* Most Americans want deficit reduction in near term
* Opposition to cuts in education, Social Security, Medicare
* Public favors 'Obamacare' exchanges and Medicaid expansion
By David Morgan
WASHINGTON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Most Americans want President Barack Obama and Congress to reduce the federal deficit without cutting Medicare, Social Security and education, according to polling data released Thursday.
A joint survey by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Harvard School of Public Health and the Kaiser Family Foundation also showed majorities support President Barack Obama's plan to expand Medicaid and provide subsidized private health insurance to working families through new online state exchanges.
The survey found that two-thirds of Americans want Washington to reduce the deficit in the short term rather than wait for a stronger economy. That included 74 percent of Republicans, 71 percent of independents and 57 percent of Democrats.
At the same time, about two-thirds of the 1,347 adults polled Jan. 3-9 rejected cuts to public education, Medicare and Social Security as a means of deficit reduction. Three-quarters said deficit reduction can occur without cuts to Medicare specifically. The findings have a 3 percentage point margin of error.
The data could suggest public support for Obama as he heads into another round of intensive deficit negotiations with Republicans while vowing to preserve the current structures of Medicare and the national Medicaid program for the poor. The two programs together are expected to cost more than $1 trillion in 2013 and serve just under 100 million people who are elderly, disabled or poor.
But experts said the results suggest political risk for Republicans and Democrats alike as deficit talks go forward.
"Both parties want a grand bargain. But I can't find a detail on either side. They want the other side to say what Medicare would look like before they come to the table. That is nervousness about public opinion," said Robert Blendon, a Harvard professor who studies political trends in healthcare.
Most respondents said deficit reduction can happen without cuts to Medicare and opposed a possible increase in the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 that Democrats and Republicans have considered as a deficit-cutting option.
Majorities also opposed reducing payments to hospitals and other Medicare healthcare providers or raising payroll taxes on workers and employers to help fund the program for the elderly and disabled.
Instead, 68 percent of Americans favored a proposal to save money by reducing prescription drug prices for low-income people who receive Medicare benefits.
Separately, a new poll by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press also found that 72 percent of Americans believe reducing the federal budget deficit should be a top priority. More than two-thirds of the 1,500 adults polled by Pew from Jan. 9 to 13 favored making Medicare and Social Security financially sound.
The survey by Robert Wood Johnson, Harvard and Kaiser also found that majorities of Americans favor two controversial provisions of Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that would extend health coverage to more than 30 million people who currently have no health insurance.
The first provision, which would create state healthcare exchanges, was favored by 55 percent of respondents who said it should be a top priority for their state governors and legislators. Another 31 percent called the exchanges an important but lower priority. Support included clear majorities of Republicans and Democrats.
Additionally, 52 percent of respondents supported the second provision, which would expand the Medicaid program for the poor to nearly all Americans earning up to 133 percent of the poverty line, equaling about $24,000 a year for a family of three. But opinions split sharply along party lines.
Kaiser President and Chief Executive Drew Altman said the results depict a contrast between political ideology and tangible benefits in the mind of the public.
"The overall idea of the (law) creates a very mixed public reaction, certainly if you call it 'Obamacare.' But most of the benefits of the (law) are very popular, even on a bipartisan basis," he said. (Reporting by David Morgan; Editing by Jilian Mincer and Dan Grebler)

Want to Blog? 5 Blogging Platforms to Consider - Legal Productivity

Blogging PlatformsWhen I started blogging about five years ago, the choice of blogging platforms were many. Should I go with a pure blogging-only platform like Google?s Blogger? A content management, traditional website-looking platform like Joomla or Drupal with a blogging add-on? Or one that combines the two, like WordPress? It was all a bit confusing for someone just starting out.

After testing them all over sleepless nights and frustrating learning curves, I concluded that since my primary goal was writing, then a pure blogging platform was the way to go. After fiddling around with Blogger for a year, I turned to WordPress and never looked back. However, depending on your needs, time-commitment, and learning-curve accommodation, you should check out a few options before deciding. Here are five:

1. WordPress ? With over 60 milion sites, WordPress is the most popular traditional blogging platform. It comes in two flavors: wordpress.com, which is hosted on their servers, and wordpress.org, the self-hosted version, both open source, free platforms. You?ll need to subscribe to a web hosting service like Hostgator to use wordpress.org. I can?t recommend this platform enough. The helpful community, cool themes, and tons of free plugins that extend functionality are hard to beat.

2. Blogger ? A Blogger blog is a great way to get your blogging feet wet. Sign up with a gmail account, answer a few questions, choose a theme, and you?re good to go. This platform works best for personal blogs.

3. Tumblr ? Referred to as a microblogging platform, Tumblr rivals WordPress in popularity. Internet memes flock to this platform for many reasons ? it?s free, quick to setup, and quick to post. But full-fledged blogs and websites are also using the Tumblr platform, like this cool website I came across recently: Inspired Law Practice.

4. Squarespace ? For as little as $8/month, you can have your own beautifully designed website, including a blogging platform and a content management system. You won?t have as much control over the look and feel of the site, but if all you want to do is write and not worry about coding and design, this is a great option.

5. Quora ? Just yesterday, the popular Q&A website announced its own blogging platform, and if the many chrips around the social networks are any indication, it?s worth checking out. The platform is promoted as great for: writers who don?t have an audience, and bloggers who have an audience but want to reach more people. I?ll check it out and thought I?d give you a heads up to do the same.

Exercise tied to better colon cancer survival odds

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People with colon cancer who spend more time walking and fewer hours on the couch are less likely to die over the seven to eight years after being diagnosed, a new study suggests.

The findings don't prove exercise itself boosts a person's survival chances, researchers said. But the pattern held even after the study team took into account how advanced patients' cancers were, their age and other aspects of their diet, lifestyle and health.

"Any activity is better than none," including walking, stretching and gardening, said Peter Campbell, the lead researcher on the study from the American Cancer Society.

"Five to ten minutes at a time is fine, and the type of activity we're talking about here, this isn't marathon running or climbing the Alps."

Campbell's analysis included about 2,300 people who developed colon cancer out of an initial pool of 184,000 volunteers in a cancer prevention and nutrition study launched in 1992.

Over an average of eight years after their diagnosis, 846 people with colon cancer died - including 379 from cancer.

The researchers found that study participants who exercised the most - equal to two and half hours of walking per week or more - both before and after being diagnosed were 28 to 42 percent less likely to die during the follow-up period than those who barely exercised at all.

Spending six or more hours of leisure time on the couch daily before diagnosis, compared to less than three hours, was tied to a 36 percent higher chance of dying. Being sedentary after a cancer diagnosis was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of death - although that particular finding could have been due to chance, the researchers noted this week in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

To account for the fact that very sick people can't exercise, Campbell and his colleagues excluded anyone who died within two years of their last survey, and found similar results.

Researchers have known for a while that obesity and exercise affect a person's risk of getting colon cancer in the first place, said Dr. Jeffrey Meyerhardt from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, who has also studied exercise and colon cancer survival.

"The question when you're a patient with colorectal cancer is, ?Do those things matter once I get the disease? Are there things I can do in addition to standard treatment to reduce my risk of recurrence?'" he told Reuters Health.

Researchers said there are a couple of possible explanations for why exercise, both pre- and post-diagnosis, might benefit people with cancer.

"What we think is at least part of what is happening is, people are going into surgery and adjuvant treatment in a more fit state," Campbell told Reuters Health.

In addition, he said, "If you're active both before and after diagnosis, there are a lot of changes that occur in your blood," such as in levels of insulin and other hormones.

"There are a lot of systemic changes that occur that probably decrease your chance of recurrence and ultimately dying."

People in the study who exercised regularly were less likely to die in general and of cardiovascular disease - such as heart attacks and lung disease - in particular. For those patients, exercise likely has the same benefit as for cancer-free people, Campbell said.

"Patients that have colon cancer, about two-thirds of them survive after five years and what they end up dying of is what all older people end up dying of, and that's usually cardiovascular disease."

He said people with colon cancer should discuss with their doctors when they can get back to physical activity. Some patients with anemia, for example, might want to hold off on exercise, and others who are immune compromised should probably avoid public gyms.

Meyerhardt recommended that people who exercised before their diagnosis return to that level of activity. Those who are new to exercise should take small steps toward increasing their activity, he added, such as walking and physical therapy.

However, Meyerhardt emphasized, exercise isn't a substitute for standard colon cancer treatments like surgery, and in some cases, chemotherapy.

(AP) ? In Zimbabwe as well as most parts of southern Africa, mopane worms are a staple part of the diet in rural areas and are considered a delicacy in the cities. They can be eaten dry, as crunchy as potato chips, or cooked and drenched in sauce. I decided to document the harvesting, preparation, sale and consumption of the worms, and found the preparation somewhat stomach-turning. But the worms can be mighty tasty and they're very nutritious. Here's everything you always wanted to know about mopane worms but were afraid to ask.

THE MOPANE WORM

The worm is the large caterpillar of the Gonimbrasia belina species, commonly called the emperor moth. It is known as a mopane worm because it is found chomping the leaves of mopane trees after it hatches in summer. It has also burrowed its way into literature, finding its way, for example, into the pages of Alexander McCall Smith's series about The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, set in neighboring Botswana. At least one of the characters munches on dried mopane worms.

THE HARVEST

After six weeks of rain, the mopane worms can be seen clinging to, and feeding on, the leaves of the mopane trees in rural Gwanda, an arid cattle-ranching area in southern Zimbabwe. Amanda Ncube normally fetches firewood to sell and looks after the family cattle, but when it's worm-harvesting season she joins other women and a few men in collecting the worms, which are as long as the width of two hands and as thick as a cigar. She slowly plucks them from the lower branches before climbing partway up the tree to shake off the higher ones. The more stubborn ones that cling to the leaves and branches are pried loose with a long stick. The worms excrete a brown liquid once they make contact with a human hand, leaving the pickers' hands wet and slippery. As they harvest the worms, the women and men move from one tree to another until their buckets are full. A thick slimy green fluid comes out as Ncube carefully squeezes out the entrails from a mopane worm she has just plucked from a tree. While some worms are prepared on site, other harvesters wait until they are back home where they squeeze out the entrails of the worms before leaving them to dry for a few days in the hot African sun. During harvest season, the porches of mud-walled homes are covered with thousands of worms, laid out to dry.

THE MARKET

At the local market, mopane worms are quite popular with residents who buy a cup or two of them and eat them immediately. The market is abuzz with activity, with most stalls strategically displaying the delicacy so people cannot miss them. Vendors offer free samples. The mopani worms are graded according to size and the area where they were harvested. Picky buyers ask about their provenance before buying, favoring worms from one district over another because, to the connoisseurs, worms from one area taste different from those from another.

HIGH PROTEIN

The mopane worm is a healthful and cheap source of nutrition.

A Zimbabwean nutritionist, Marlon Chidemo, says the worms are high in healthy nutrients and contain three times the amount of protein as beef. He says eating worms is less taxing on the environment than consuming beef because it takes far fewer leaves to produce worms than it does feed to produce the same amount of beef.

WORMY BUSINESS

Dried mopane worms have become a multimillion-dollar industry, even exported to countries like South Africa and Botswana. They can be found in African restaurants in Paris.

PREPARATION

Once they've been dried out, they can be eaten straight away. They can also be cooked in a spicy or peanut butter sauce and served with pap, a maize porridge.

Having grown up eating the mopane worms, I have never had the opportunity to see how they harvest and prepare them until now. While the process is rather disgusting, the worm can be a pleasure to eat as a starter or a side dish. The taste is reminiscent of salty potato chips. Malawi's first President Hastings Kamuzu Banda preferred his just like that, simply dried and then eaten as a snack like chips. Banda was known for carrying around pocketsful of worms that he would also offer to children.

A RECIPE

Here is a Congolese recipe that AP's special Africa correspondent Michelle Faul describes as "one of the tastiest" for mopane worms.

Mopani Worms for four people.

Ingredients: 500 grams dried mopane worms; three tomatoes, diced or 1 can of tomatoes; two onions, diced; 1/2 teaspoon turmeric; three fresh green chilies, finely chopped; three cloves of garlic, finely chopped; tablespoon of fresh ginger, finely chopped. Soak dried worms in water for 3-4 hours to reconstitute. Fry onions in groundnut oil on medium heat until translucent. Add turmeric, chilies, garlic and ginger. Fry for about five minutes. Add tomatoes and cook on low for about 20 minutes until spices are well blended. Add drained worms and cook until they have softened a bit but still are a little crunchy. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with pap, called sadza in Zimbabwe. Enjoy.

Gilda's Club chapter in Wis. sticks with name

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Stung by the overwhelmingly negative reaction to removing the name of original "Saturday Night Live" cast member Gilda Radner from a cancer support group's title, a Wisconsin chapter is borrowing one of the comedian's catch phrases for its next announcement: Never mind.

Gilda's Club Madison will remain just that, group leaders told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The board voted last week to keep the name after an avalanche of criticism in November when it announced it was switching to the more generic Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin, in part out of concern that young people today were unfamiliar with Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.

"It really struck a chord with folks and all of us agreed we want people to come to Gilda's and get the help that they need," said Wayne Harris, chairman of the board for the Madison chapter. "If this is what it takes to make that happen, we're all as a group happy to make it happen."

The intention of changing to a broader name was honorable, Harris said. "In retrospect, we probably should have thought that through or understood it more," he said.

Anger over the name change, which was supposed to take effect this month, came from members of the local Gilda's Club chapter, fans of Radner who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor, leaders of other clubs who reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the name, as well as Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder.

"We started receiving emails right away," said Lannia Stenz, director of the Madison chapter. "For the most part it was simply asking 'Why did you do this? Please reconsider.' It was really, truly passionate feedback. We had some people who were angry but at the base of everything it was the love of Gilda and her story."

Reaction to the news led to a flurry of positive comments Wednesday on the Gilda's Club Facebook page and on Twitter.

"At the end of the day it's a good win," said LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Gilda's Club chapter in Chicago. "Gilda's roots were improv. As she would have said, 'Make mistakes work for you.'"

Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how generations view the world differently, said he was glad to know that Radner still resonates with people and has not been forgotten.

But Nief also said he thought the decision to keep the name was more about securing future donations and less about honoring Radner.

"They are an organization that does very good work and in order to do it they have to raise money and the name is related to their ability to raise funds," Nief said.

Stenz, leader of the Madison chapter, said the potential loss of donations "was not as much of a factor in our decision to retain the name." She said it was driven more by feedback from its board, Gilda's Club members and people in the community.

Stenz and Harris said the goal of the name change was always about making clear the group's mission, not to remove Radner's memory.

"We were just talking about changing the name that we went by legally," Harris said. While Radner would have still been a part of the organization, "in the end, they want to see Gilda's name out front," he said.

Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls of the Madison-area chapter, which is located in the suburb of Middleton. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her "Saturday Night Live" characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana; speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters; and out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella who would say, "Never mind," after being told of her confusion.

Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986. She sought support from The Wellness Community in California, and in 1991, her friends and family started Gilda's Club on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or changing it. Of the 53 chapters worldwide, 23 are known as Gilda's Club.

Together, the chapters deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, said Linda House, executive vice president of the national Cancer Support Community. The Madison chapter has about 2,200 members.

Stenz said she hoped the Madison community that Gilda's Club serves will embrace its decision to keep the name.

As far as lessons learned from the experience, Harris had a simple takeaway: "We're not changing our name again."

Dutch, Britons, Germans warned to leave Benghazi

LONDON (AP) ? Britain, Germany and the Netherlands urged their citizens Thursday to immediately leave the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in response to what was described as an imminent threat against Westerners. European officials told The Associated Press that schools were among the potential targets.

The warnings come a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton testified to Congress about the September attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya. They also come as French troops battle al-Qaida linked militants in Mali and follow the deaths of dozens of foreigners taken hostage by Islamist extremists in Algeria ? though it remained unclear if those two events were linked to the latest concerns about Libya.

The foreign ministries of the three countries issued statements variously describing the threat as specific and imminent but none gave details. Germany and Britain urged their nationals still in Benghazi to leave "immediately," while Dutch Foreign Ministry spokesman Thijs van Son said that "staying in this area is not to be advised."

Schools, businesses and offices of non-governmental organizations were among the possible targets, according to two European officials familiar with the threats made and who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be quoted by name in the media. They refused to give any other details.

It was not immediately clear how many people could be affected; Britain's Foreign Office said likely "dozens" of its citizens were in the city, while van Son said there are four Dutch citizens registered as being in Benghazi and possibly two more. A German Foreign Ministry official, who requested anonymity because government policy did not allow him to be quoted by name, said there are "very few" German citizens in and around Benghazi.

Several countries have for months advised against all travel to the city, especially after the U.S. mission was attacked, and local residents said that many foreigners had already left in recent weeks.

Air Malta said that Thursday's flights between the Mediterranean island and Benghazi had been canceled following the British advice. The airline said its next flight to Benghazi was scheduled for Tuesday of next week, adding that "the airline will review the situation on an ongoing basis." Air Malta said flights to Tripoli were not affected.

Benghazi, a city of 1 million people, is a business hub where many major firms employ Westerners. It also was where the Libyan uprising against longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi began in 2011. Gadhafi was eventually toppled and killed after NATO backed the rebel movement, and the Arab country has since struggled with security. Al-Qaida-linked militants operate in the country alongside other Islamist groups.

Adel Mansouri, principal of the International School of Benghazi, said U.K. and foreign nationals were warned in the last few days about a possible threat to Westerners.

He said the school's teachers were given the option of leaving but decided to stay. The school has some 540 students. Most are Libyan, with some 40 percent who hold dual nationality. Less than 5 percent are British while 10 to 15 students have U.S.-Libyan nationality, Mansouri said. Classes were not due to resume until Sunday because of a holiday Thursday.

"We told the British ambassador we are staying, and we'll be in touch," said Mansouri, himself a Libyan-British dual national. "We don't see a threat on the ground."

Saleh Gawdat, a Benghazi lawmaker, said French doctors who were working in Benghazi hospitals have left the city and that the French cultural center has closed out of concerns about potential retaliation over the French-led military intervention in nearby Mali, which began two weeks ago.

Violence in Benghazi has targeted both foreigners as well as Libyan officials in recent months, with assassinations, bombings and other attacks.

In addition to the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission, an Italian diplomat's car was fired on by militants in Benghazi. The consul, Guido De Sanctis, wasn't injured in the attack earlier this month, but the incident prompted Italy to order the temporary suspension of its consular activities in the city and send its foreign staff home.

Islamist extremists in the area are often blamed for targeting security officials who worked under Gadhafi, as a kind of revenge for torturing or imprisoning them in the past. Many city residents also blame Gadhafi loyalists who they say are trying to undermine Libya's new leaders by sowing violence.

Ibrahim Sahd, a Benghazi-based lawmaker and politician, said that the new government is putting together a plan to beef up security in the city and this "might have worried the Westerners of a backlash."

Noman Benotman, a former Libyan jihadist with links to al-Qaida who is now an analyst at London's Quilliam Foundation, said other groups inspired by the terror network have been gaining a following since Gadhafi's fall. There have been nearly a dozen attacks against Western targets in Libya recently, he said.

"It's the same al-Qaida ideology that is driving these militants," Benotman said.

He added, however, that the militants were unlikely to target oil or gas installations in Libya because they need support from the population. "Targeting these installations would turn Libyan workers and tribes against them," he said.

Oil companies working in other parts of Libya said they were aware of government warnings to citizens but there were no immediate plans for evacuations.

The Garmin cycle computer reviewed and compared

Are you looking for the best Garmin cycle computer? If you are you have come to the right place. I have tried many different bicycle computers over the years and out of all the different brands and models I have had the fortune (and misfortune, in some instances) to use I can say that the Garmin cycle computer is the best in its class. It doesn't matter what Garmin cycle computer you buy, you won't regret it.

"So what's so good about the Garmin cycle computer?" This is an easy one.

1) Garmin cycle computers are tough, durable and well made. In my opinion, they are the most durable bicycle computer available.

2) Garmin cycle computers are a fully sealed unit which means they are totally waterproof and can be used in all weathers. I can personally vouch for this as I have used my Garmin cycle computer in torrential rain and it still works fine.

3) Garmin cycle computers require no set up, i.e. they are a "plug and play" and can be used on any bike. If you have a road bike and a mountain bike this means you can switch between the two with ease.

4) Garmin cycle computers are logical and user friendly, which makes them so easy to use.

5) Garmin cycle computers rely on GPS technology to calculate speed, distance, altitude etc. which makes them very accurate.
All Garmin cycle computers are wireless which means no cable ties wrapped around your bike and no risk of getting your feet, pedals, handlebars etc. caught up in any wires.

6) Garmin cycle computers can be removed from the bike when you park up for a drink stop, which means they computer can't be pinched.

7) A Garmin cycle computer is full of technology and they look awesome too.

The above is true of all Garmin cycle computers, regardless of the model you buy. Obviously, the top end Garmin cycle computers have more features and technology but all Garmin cycle computers in the range have the basic features above.

If you want to find out what Garmin cycle computer models are available, and a bit more about each one please check out the Garmin Cycle computers below.
