New theory shows that neither birth nor death stops a flock

Neither births nor deaths stop the flocking of organisms. They just keep moving, says theoretical physicist John J. Toner of the University of Oregon. The notion, he says, has implications in biology and eventually could point to new cancer therapies.
Picture any scenario in which self-propelled organisms -- animals, birds, bacteria, molecules within cells, cancer cells, fish, and even tiny plastic rods on a vibrating table -- move as a swarm or flock in the same direction. Eighteen years ago, Toner co-developed two equations that together provide a complete theory of flocking for "immortal" flocks -- those in which creatures are not being born and dying while the moving.
Now he has extended that work to include the effects of birth and death.
The new equations are as complete a description of flocks as the Navier-Stokes equation is of fluid dynamics. This equation, named after French physicist and engineer Claude-Louis Navier and British scientist George Gabriel Stokes applies equally well to all fluids; air, water, honey and the oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster are all described by it. All of the differences between these very different fluids can be incorporated into the Navier-Stokes equation by changing the value of one number, called "the viscosity." Large values apply to sticky fluids like honey and oil, while smaller values describe air and water.
The Navier-Stokes equation has been used successfully for more than a century in the design of aircraft, automobiles, plumbing and power stations.
Toner's equations likewise work for all flocks, and contain some numbers that must be adjusted to account for differences between different kinds of flocks. The earlier work on immortal flocks has been applied to the flocking behavior of birds, particularly studies of starlings in Rome by Andrea Cavagna and Irene Giardina.
In a new paper -- "Birth, Death, and Flight: A Theory of Malthusian Flocks," published in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters -- Toner shows that flocking is even robust against birth and death. The finding, he said, is especially important for many other organisms that flock, especially bacteria, which may contain millions of individuals that are constantly dying and being replaced by the reproduction of others as the swarm moves.
"A flock can keep moving in the same direction for times much longer than the lifetime of any individual member," said Toner, a member of the UO Institute of Theoretical Science and a professor in the physics department. "Individuals are being born and dying but their direction and motion can persist much longer than the lifetime of any individual creature."
Secondly, he added, the density changes of such a "mortal flock" -- where some members are leaving by death and joining by birth -- create persistent but predictable fluctuations. "Birth and death are very important in microbiological flocks, such as swarms of bacteria or in collections of self-propelled molecules that flock in most living cells."
This fundamental new knowledge already is applicable to understanding the movement of molecules within cells -- in particular, mitotic spindles that launch the machinery of cell development and division, Toner said.
In mitotic spindles, individual molecules live for only about 20 minutes, but spindles live and continue their work for days, he said. "The motion continues as dead molecules are replaced by newly synthesized molecules, as well as by molecules which immigrate in to take their places."
Through the application of his new theory to the study of mitotic spindles, Toner said, it may be possible to design specifically targeted cancer therapies that, unlike current chemotherapies, would only kill aberrant, or diseased cells, and allow desirable, healthy ones to live. "In reality, such applications are a long way off," said Toner, whose research is supported by the National Science Foundation.
"This study shows us how fundamental physics and mathematics deployed to explain an everyday occurrence in nature can spin off with potentially life-saving medical applications," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "This cutting-edge research conducted at the University of Oregon is another great example of the widespread applications and potential benefits that basic research and the promise it holds to address the real problems of today and tomorrow."
In September, Toner will embark on a one-year sabbatical to do additional research on flocking, or collective behavior, at IBM Yorktown Heights and the University of California, Berkeley, under a fellowship from the New York City-based Simons Foundation.

NORTHAMPTON, England (AP) -A former Premier League footballer has been jailed for six months for sending fake letters to the police to avoid a driving ban.
Leon McKenzie, who played for Norwich in England's top division in the 2004-05 season, sent letters claiming to be from a fictional garage which said his car was off the road.
The 33-year-old McKenzie was sentenced at a court in Northampton on Tuesday after pleading guilty to six charges of perverting the course of justice between February 2008 and December 2009.
McKenzie released a statement on Twitter, saying his behavior was "totally unacceptable and very naive" during a time in which he "fell deep into depression, which led me to try and take my life."
He retired from football in December.

Genealogy Serendipity Moments - new.familysearch.org and the ...
This week I am working on several projects. The first one completed was incorporating the information from new.familysearch.org for the Gates family. This came about because when I was working on the War of 1812 article about Ardil Gates, I?borrowed?two books from the?GFO,?Frederick J. Seaver, Historical Sketches Of Franklin County and Its Several Towns, and Silvio A. Bedini, Ridgefield in Review (Connecticut). Both are fantastic works,?which provide information about the locality and the people who lived in the vicinity.
The first was published by J. B. Lyon Company, Albany, NY, 1918 and is available at the Library of Congress copyright free, and also at this link http://history.rays-place.com/ny/ft-covington-1-ny.htm. Frederick J. Seaver was a local newspaperman and he gleaned the history of the area in his many years of working there. This is the town where Ardil enlisted in the War of 1812 and two of his brothers are known to have lived here.
The second book was published by The Ridgefield 250th Anniversary Committee, Inc., Ridgefield, Connecticut, 1958. This is a fantastic history of the town where Ardil Gate's father and grandfather lived from about 1734 to 1793. This encompasses the Revolutionary War, in which his grandfather and family were involved. In reading the book, one discovers that the index is not all encompassing, and one must take notes of important information. Samuel Gates, the father of Ardil, is indexed on pages 57-58. For the time period he lived there, many other details help in understanding his life.
As I read the book, it became apparent that I needed a better understanding of the family. I had done some basic research on the family?and even viewed the records at new.familysearch.org for further clues in the records, but I returned to the records with further understanding. Now that I have filled in the pedigree chart a little more, I have identified other localities that apply to this family.
There are some very notable errors in these records, but for the first three generations after Ardil it seems fairly accurate. The fourth generation is a mess and I will deal with it another time. The most glaring error for Simon Gates and Margaret Barslow is their first child, listed as Abraham born 2160 BC and died 1819 BC, to parents who were born in about 1637 and 1642. The second child is listed as Bartholomew, born about 1638, not a likely birth date given the parent's dates. Child number eleven is born in 1861 and died in 1737, probably not the correct dates.
To make matters worse for this family, there are four additional parents listed on the family page that are the same couple. The database will not allow them to be merged, as it would create too large a file. Each family group lists the children multiple times, some as many as ten. It?will be?a careful process to clean up this database. Soon it will open to the public and maybe the extra assistance will be the key to cleaning it up.
My serendipity moment came when I went back to check on the family of Ardil Gates. There I found my husband's great grandmother Roena Gates listed twice. Once correctly and then again, but as a male with the death date of her mother recorded for her death. We all make mistakes in this work, but things like this leave us shaking our heads. I sent an email to the contributor of the information requesting that she please make this change and to also contact me so we can collaborate on the family history. She promptly emailed me back for clarification and then said she would like to work together on this family.
That is one of the nicest features of the new.familysearch database, which will soon be incorporated into the family trees at familysearch.org. It is important to be patient and tactful in suggesting the need for changes. We need to work together, to reach optimal success in our genealogies. The many wonderful records being made accessible will be important in this work, but the information found within common relatives homes are the real keys to success. Suicide blast kills 23 Shiite Muslims in Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A suicide attacker on a motorcycle blew himself up in a market in a Pakistani town close to the Afghan border on Friday, killing 23 Shiite Muslims and wounding 50 people, officials said.
Violence by Sunni extremists against Shiites is common in Pakistan, a Muslim country dominated by Sunnis but home to a sizeable Shiite minority. Although attacks by Shiites against Sunnis do occur, such violence is not as prevalent.
Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida and the Taliban often believe Shiites are infidels and that it is permissible or even praiseworthy to kill them. The emergence of those groups in the country over the last 10 years has added to the frequency and viciousness of attacks against Shiites.
Local government administrator Wajid Ali said the bomber struck in a market in the northwestern town of Parachinar.
Many of the 23 dead were shoppers or people with stalls in the market, he said.
After the attack, security forces fired on crowds protesting the attack, killing three people, said Ali.
A local Taliban commander, Fazal Saeed Haqqani, claimed responsibility for the attack in Parachinar, a mostly Shiite town in northwest Pakistan. He justified the attack by saying that Shiites had been attacking Sunnis.
Parachinar and the nearby region of Kurram have been plagued by sectarian violence for several years. Shiites have been the overwhelming victims.
Pakistan has seen hundreds of suicide attacks over the last five years, mostly by militants in the northwest close to the Afghan border who have given haven to al-Qaida operatives and insurgents fighting in Afghanistan. The army has responded with several offensives, but have had limited success in a country where extremists have significant support among the population.
