Scientists find oldest occurrence of arthropods preserved in amber ...

Scientists find oldest occurrence of arthropods preserved in amber

An international team of scientists has discovered the oldest record of arthropods?invertebrate animals that include insects, arachnids, and crustaceans?preserved in amber. The specimens, one fly and two mites found in millimeter-scale droplets of amber from northeastern Italy, are about 100 million years older than any other amber arthropod ever collected. The group's findings, which are published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, pave the way for a better evolutionary understanding of the most diverse group of organisms in the world.

"Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years," said corresponding author David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History's Division of Invertebrate Zoology and a world authority on amber and fossil arthropods.

Globules of fossilized resin are typically called amber. Amber ranges in age from the Carboniferous (about 340 million years ago) to about 40,000 years ago, and has been produced by myriad plants, from tree ferns to flowering trees, but predominantly by conifers. Even though arthropods are more than 400 million years old, until now, the oldest record of the animals in amber dates to about 130 million years. The newly discovered arthropods break that mold with an age of 230 million years. They are the first arthropods to be found in amber from the Triassic Period.

These photomicrographs are of the two new species of ancient gall mites in 230-million-year-old amber droplets from northeastern Italy, taken at 1000x magnification. The gall mites were named (left) Triasacarus fedelei and (right) Ampezzoa triassica.

(Photo Credit: University of G?ttingen/A. Schmidt)

The amber droplets, most between 2-6 millimeters long, were buried in outcrops high in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. About 70,000 of the miniscule droplets were screened for inclusions ?encased animal and plant material?by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of Georg-August University, G?ttingen, resulting in the discovery of the three arthropods. The tiny arthropods were studied by Grimaldi and Evert Lindquist, an expert on gall mites at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa.

Two of the specimens are new species of mites, named Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils in an extremely specialized group called Eriophyoidea that has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called "galls." The ancient gall mites are surprisingly similar to ones seen today.

"You would think that by going back to the Triassic you'd find a transitional form of gall mite, but no," Grimaldi said. "Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there?a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws, and mouthparts."

The ancient mites likely fed on the leaves of the tree that ultimately preserved them, a conifer in the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. Although about 97 percent of today's gall mites feed on flowering plants, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica existed prior to the appearance and rapid radiation of flowering plants. This finding reveals the evolutionary endurance of the mites.

"We now know that gall mites are very adaptable," Grimaldi said. "When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts."

The third amber specimen, a fly, cannot be identified because, outside of the insect's antennae, its body parts were not well preserved. But now that the researchers have shown that amber preserved Triassic arthropods, they are eager to find more specimens.

"There was a huge change in the flora and fauna in the Triassic because it was right after one of the most profound mass extinctions in history, at the end of the Permian," Grimaldi said. "It's an important time to study if you want to know how life evolved."

This photo shows typical amber droplets. Researchers screened 70,000 drops, resulting in the three arthropod inclusions. Scale bar: 1 mm.

Romney to fly in early to Republican convention

Mitt Romney is to fly to Tampa on Tuesday, two days earlier than expected, as he seeks to prevent Tropical Storm Isaac from overshadowing his coronation as the Republican presidential nominee.

In a surprise announcement, aides confirmed only that the White House hopeful would be in Tampa, but the expectation was that he would attend the convention to see his wife Ann give a primetime speech on the storm-delayed opening night.

"She's going to do terrific," Romney told reporters in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire as they emerged from a preparation session.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech. Our sons are already in Tampa and they say it's terrific there, a lot of great friends, and we're looking forward to a great convention."

What was supposed to be a raucous beginning to four days of carefully choreographed political theater opened with a whimper Monday as Isaac hogged the media spotlight, barreling through the Gulf of Mexico on course for a direct hit on New Orleans on Tuesday after strengthening into a hurricane.

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus declared a recess to a mostly empty hall almost before proceedings had begun, saying the thoughts and prayers of all must first and foremost be with the people of the Gulf Coast.

The original script was for thousands of jubilant delegates to formally nominate Romney on Monday to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election, launching a succession of well-honed speeches by party luminaries.

That roll call will now take place on Tuesday afternoon, possibly now with Romney in attendance.

Lying neck-and-neck with Obama in the polls 10 weeks before election day, Romney hopes to use the convention to recast his image after months of damaging White House attacks on his tax secrecy and business record.

Many US voters do not really tune in until the convention season starts -- Obama and the Democrats hold their event next week in Charlotte, North Carolina -- so Tampa provides Romney with a golden opportunity to reset the narrative.

The run-up to the convention was marred by incendiary remarks from Todd Akin, a Republican congressman seeking a Senate seat in Missouri who suggested women's bodies spontaneously prevent pregnancy after a "legitimate rape."

The Romney camp is thus anxious to get the campaign back on message, billing the former Massachusetts governor as a successful businessman with the acumen to turn around the flagging US economy and get the country back on track.

Ann Romney's speech is expected to try to boost his likability by highlighting his human side, while former Olympians take to the floor on Thursday to remind Americans that he saved the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics from bankruptcy.

The storm presents the candidate with the specter of a natural disaster casting a pall over his big moment, and he must tread a fine line between driving his political ambitions and showing sensitivity to those in harm's way.

"Our thoughts are with the people that are in the storm's path and (we) hope that they're spared any major destruction," Romney said earlier Monday.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who was due to speak at the convention, was forced to stay home and prepare for disaster, while vice presidential pick Paul Ryan delayed his arrival in Tampa until Tuesday because of the storm.

Romney aides promised the show would go on largely as planned as they frantically repackaged four days of events into three.

Party officials stressed that the main night-time speaking slots on Tuesday and Wednesday, culminating in Romney's acceptance speech on Thursday after an introduction by rising Hispanic star Marco Rubio, remained unchanged.

"The hurricane presents a tough situation," said Diane Heith, associate professor of politics at St John's University in New York.

"In purely political terms, there is a lot competing for news attention, the convention versus this hurricane. The more significant the weather event, the harder it will be for Romney to get out the message the Republican party planned."

Forecasts put Isaac on a direct path for New Orleans, seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and killed 1,800 people in the country's worst natural disaster in living memory.

National polls have shown a neck-and-neck race between Romney and Obama for weeks. A Washington Post and ABC News poll out Monday showed the challenger one point ahead, 47 percent to 46 percent.

Other surveys show Obama with crucial leads in some of the most important swing states that could decide the election.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

Adrian Gonzalez Home Run: New Dodgers Star Homers In 1st At-Bat With Los Angeles (VIDEO)

Adrian Gonzalez

Los Angeles Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez watches his three-run home run, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES -- Adrian Gonzalez has hit a three-run homer on the second pitch he saw in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform.

Hours after arriving at Dodger Stadium on a flight from Boston with Josh Beckett and Nick Punto following Saturday's blockbuster trade with the Red Sox, Gonzalez drove an 0-1 pitch from Miami right-hander Josh Johnson deep into the lower seats in the right-field corner.

It was his first National League homer since the end of the 2010 season with San Diego.

Gonzalez took over at first base for James Loney, who went to Boston in the deal. The four-time All-Star batted cleanup between Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez, with Andre Ethier dropped to sixth despite getting four hits Friday night.

Gonzalez became the sixth player to homer in his first at-bat with the Dodgers.

President and VIPs hail Neil Armstrong

Saul Loeb / AFP - Getty Images file

First moonwalker Neil Armstrong and President Barack Obama get their picture taken on July 20, 2009, during an Oval Office meeting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was remembered by friends, colleagues and admirers as a man who made his country believe anything was possible with ingenuity and dedication.

A few examples from the outpouring of expressions for Armstrong, who died today at the age of 82:

President Barack Obama: "Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Neil Armstrong."

"Neil was among the greatest of American heroes ??not just of his time, but of all time.? When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation.? They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.

"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ??including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space. That legacy will endure ??sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

Buzz Aldrin, astronaut who was lunar module pilot on Apollo 11: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the mission of Apollo 11. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone.

"Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history. I had truly hoped that in 2019, we would be standing together along with our colleague Mike Collins to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of our moon landing. Regrettably, this is not to be. Neil will most certainly be there with us in spirit.

"On behalf of the Aldrin family, we extend our deepest condolences to Carol and the entire Armstrong family. I will miss my friend Neil as I know our fellow citizens and people around world will miss this foremost aviation and space pioneer. May he rest in peace.?

NBC's Jay Barbree, Brian Williams and former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly reflect on the life of Neil Armstrong.

Michael Collins, the astronaut who piloted the Apollo 11 command module and circled the moon while Aldrin and Armstrong went to its surface: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

John Glenn, former U.S. senator and the first American in orbit, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong: "When I think of Neil, I think of someone who for our country was dedicated enough to dare greatly."

Charles Bolden, NASA administrator: "As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own. Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero."

Mitt Romney, presumptive Republican presidential candidate: "Neil Armstrong today takes his place in the hall of heroes. With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth. I met and spoke with Neil Armstrong just a few weeks ago ??his passion for space, science and discovery, and his devotion to America will inspire me through my lifetime."

Rep. Paul Ryan, R- Wis., presumptive Republican vice presidential candidate: "We lost a great American today. ? This is a man who proved that we can imagine big things, who showed that in America you can set very lofty goals and accomplish them. Neil Armstrong is the epitome of American vision, American power, American creativity and how we can set the horizons and achieve our goals."

Leon Panetta, secretary of defense: "We are bidding farewell to one of our own.? As a decorated Korean War veteran, as an astronaut for NASA, and as the first man to walk on the moon, Neil inspired generations of Americans to believe that as a nation we are capable of achieving greatness that only comes with determination, perseverance, and hard work. As a true pioneer, his one small step showed all mankind the great feats we can accomplish when we set ourselves to the task.? While Neil is no longer with us, his spirit and his legacy of American achievement and national pride will live forever."

Nancy Conrad, widow of Apollo 12 commander Pete Conrad and founder and chairman of the Conrad Foundation: ?Neil was a humble and personable man ... although he was the first man to walk on the moon, he never asserted his own ego into a conversation. Neil will always be remembered for the inspiration he gave to all of us to press on and to achieve our own personal greatness. He was the personification of the Giant Leap for mankind. Neil was not only a gentleman, he was a gentle man.?

See images from the career of astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., chairman of the Senate Science and Space subcommittee, who flew on the shuttle Columbia in 1986: "Neil Armstrong understood that we should reach beyond the stars. His 'one giant leap for mankind' was taken by a giant of a man."

John Boehner, R-Ohio, House speaker: ?"A true hero has returned to the heavens to which he once flew. Neil Armstrong blazed trails not just for America, but for all of mankind. He inspired generations of boys and girls worldwide not just through his monumental feat, but with the humility and grace with which he carried himself to the end. Ohio has lost one of her proudest sons. Humanity has gained a legend."

Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Texas, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee: "Neil Armstrong was an inspiration to all Americans, not only for his role in one of the proudest moments in American history, but also for his courage, grace and humility. He exemplified all that is great about mankind, and he will forever be revered as a true American hero."?

Kenneth Murphy, president of the Moon Society: ?In Lunam Aeternum: Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) may be gone, but he will forever be with us.?

Dan Pastuf, chairman, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space: ??Many students first learn about space exploration through the great accomplishments of the past, like Armstrong?s historic and heroic landing on the moon. This was a journey that he himself said only had a 50-50 chance of success. Because of the groundwork Armstrong laid down, young people have been inspired throughout the world to pursue the limits of where we can explore.?

Elliot H. Pulham, CEO, Space Foundation: ?Neil Armstrong was a humble, soft-spoken hero who never forgot that it was the will of the nation and the tireless work of thousands of scientists and engineers that enabled him to take that famous 'giant leap' for mankind. ? Armstrong's quiet resolve and unyielding belief in the importance of exploration will be missed by a grateful nation.?

Lon Rains, chairman, Coalition for Space Exploration: ?Neil was a humble man who devoted his life and his career to serving a greater cause. From the children who strive to explore the stars to those who devote their lives to reaching beyond the bonds of earth, one can only hope to follow in his footsteps."

The Importance of an Umbrella Policy | - Wholesale Insurance - RSI ...

When it comes to auto and homeowner?s insurance, there are several details the average policy holder ignores. For instance, most people believe that the simple fact of having these two policies will completely protect them against any unexpected liability.

The truth is that every liability coverage has its limit: some are high enough to provide fair protection, while others are considerably lower and may hold the insured responsible for liability exceeding the amount established in their policy.

Umbrella policies are useful in the event of a lawsuit or liability judgment, especially when the auto or home liability coverage does not cover it, or the limits have been reached. These policies can be made to protect the insured against claims due to damage or injury occurred in their home and/or claims due to damage or injury caused to a third person or its property. Umbrella policies can also cover legal and defense fees.

Usually, the liability coverage for an umbrella policy is about $1 million, with premiums averaging a couple of hundred a year. It is recommendable to shop for umbrella policies online in order to compare prices from one insurance company to another. Bundling services is also advised as they often come with discounts.

At RSI, a managing general agency, we offer umbrella policies and all type of insurance your insured needs. Visit our website or contact us to find out more about our products and services.

We all know that crime is everywhere and it does not choose who its next victims. It is a small equipment which generates about three milliamperes of electricity. It is not only seen in movies, but this tool is actually used by police officers and ordinary individuals as well. Because of its small size, it is portable and can easily be hidden in your bag or pockets. You will probably ask why it is effective in averting possible crime, right? 2012 Baseball Draft Review: Fourth Round Updates

2012 Draft: Update on Fourth Round Picks

Continuing with our 2012 draft updates, we move forward to the fourth round and examine how everyone is doing so far. This seems like a popular feature, so we'll keep doing it as long as there is interest.

129) Rio Ruiz, 3B, Houston Astros: .271/.361/.412 with 12 walks, 22 strikeouts in 85 at-bats in Gulf Coast Rookie League, followed by .258/.361/.419 with four walks, six strikeouts in 31 at-bats for Greenville in the Appalachian League. Very good defense so far, will take a walk. There are good things to work with here. Huge overslot bonus but could well be worth it.

130) Zach Jones, RHP, Minnesota Twins:
Excellent so far, 0.57 ERA with 25/6 K/BB in 16 innings between Elizabethton in the Appy and Beloit in the Low-A Midwest League, just six hits. So far, a better pitcher in pro ball than in college.

131) Patrick Kivlehan, 3B, Seattle Mariners: .294/.364/.476 with 10 homers, 12-for-13 in steals, 16 walks, 81 strikeouts in 248 at-bats for Everett in the Northwest League. Power/speed combination is completely genuine and exciting, but he's got serious contact questions and some defensive issues, not unexpected for a guy with an extensive football background. Despite his weaknesses, I like him.

Star-divide

132) Christian Walker, 1B, Baltimore Orioles: Hit .284/.376/.420 with 10 walks, 14 strikeouts in 81 at-bats for Aberdeen in the NY-P, before going on the disabled list with a back injury. No change in status: he can hit, but will it be enough to play regularly as a RH-hitting first baseman in the majors? An open question.

133) Kenny Diekroeger, 2B, Kansas City Royals: .223/.289/.397 with 16 walks, 51 strikeouts in 184 at-bats for Burlington in the Appy. The little voice of doubt in college worried that he wasn't living up to his tools. The voice is now a choir.

134) Josh Conway, RHP, Chicago Cubs: Recovering from Tommy John.

135) Walker Lockett, RHP, San Diego Padres: 3.78 ERA with 10/3 K/BB in 17 innings in Arizona Rookie League, 23 hits, 1.71 GO/AO. Small sample, etc., but nothing here contradicts pre-draft reports of a big right-hander with a live arm who needs development time, breaking stuff, etc.

136) Brandon Thomas, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates: Didn't sign, returns to Georgia Tech. I'd love to know the full story here. Is he banking on a bigger payout as a senior?

137) Austin Dean, OF, Miami Marlins: .223/.337/.338 with 24 walks, 35 strikeouts in 148 at-bats for Gulf Coast League Marlins. Two steals. Draws walks but that's about it so far.

138) Seth Willoughby, RHP, Colorado Rockies: 1.50 ERA, 25/3 K/BB in 24 innings for Tri-City in the Northwest League, 18 hits, 1.76 GO/AO, seven saves. Outstanding performance in all respects thus far. Fastball/cutter combination could get him to the majors very quickly.

139) B.J. Boyd, OF, Oakland Athletics:
.318/.412/.462 with 21 walks, 33 strikeouts, 15 steals in 132 at-bats in the Arizona Rookie League. Good tools, has speed and power, was supposed to be raw but he's done well thus far. Intriguing prospect going forward, needs more attention than he's received.

140) Branden Kaupe, SS, New York Mets: .174/.373/.193 with 34 walks, 35 strikeouts in 114 at-bats for Kingsport in the Appalachian League. Has struggled in conversion to 2B. Other than drawing walks, he's been terrible so far, but you know the next phrase: he's just 18.

141) Brandon Brennan, RHP, Chicago White Sox: 3.65 ERA with 22/10 K/BB in 25 innings for Great Falls in the Pioneer League, 29 hits, 2.43 GO/AO. These results fit pre-draft reports of a powerful sinker but erratic command.

142) Jon Moscot, RHP, Cincinnati Reds:
Going easy on the pitch counts with this one. Has made nine starts between the AZL and Billings in the Pioneer League, but pitching just 20.1 innings. 18/9 K/BB, 17 hits, 2.23 GO/AO, 2.21 ERA. Keeps the ball down, average velocity, knows how to pitch.

143) D'vone McClure, OF, Cleveland Indians: .213/.322/.307 with 11 walks, 16 strikeouts in 75 at-bats for AZL Indians. Considered raw but talented with a football background, and it shows so far.

144) Brandon Miller, OF, Samford:
.232/.317/.554 with four homers, six walks, 17 strikeouts in 56 at-bats for Auburn in the NY-P. Small sample, but fits the scouting reports perfectly: he's got a ton of power, but struggles for contact.

145) Tucker Donahue, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays: 5.56 ERA with 20/12 K/BB in 23 innings for Vancouver in Northwest League, 26 hits, 1.47 GO/AO. Good sinker, but he was erratic in college. Bonus: $5000. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

146) Justin Chigbogu, 1B, Los Angeles Dodgers: .204/.282/.316 with 11 walks, 42 strikeouts in 98 at-bats in the AZL. Pre-draft report: tons of power, but quite unrefined even as high school first basemen go. Well, that's still the report.

147) Alex Yarbrough, 2B, Los Angeles Angels:
.275/.312/.387 with 10 walks, 18 strikeouts, 9-for-11 in steals, in 204 at-bats for Low-A Cedar Rapids. Very reliable on defense, just two errors with decent range. Overall, handling jump from college to full-season ball pretty well.

148) Steven Okert, LHP, San Francisco Giants:
2.45 ERA with 27/10 K/BB in 26 innings between AZL and Salem-Keizer in the Northwest League, with a 3.25 GO/AO. Numbers fit college scouting reports of a strong sinker/slider combination just fine.

149) Justin Black, OF, Atlanta Braves: .188/.300/.266 with 19 walks, 53 strikeouts in 128 at-bats for GCL Braves. Runs well but is just 3-for-7 in steals. Montana high school product is supposed to be toolsy-but-raw, and that's exactly what he is. It is too soon to know if he's hopelessly raw or not.

150) Alex Mejia, SS, St. Louis Cardinals: .250/.265/.333 with two walks, 13 strikeouts in 96 at-bats for Batavia in the NY-P. Handling shortstop well so far. Bat highly-questionable but small sample. Out with torn ACL.

151) Ty Buttrey, RHP, Boston Red Sox:
1.80 ERA with five strikeouts, one walk, five hits in five innings, 1.67 GO/AO. Microscopic sample but nothing contradicts pre-draft reports. Could have been a first round pick in some drafts.

152) Nolan Gannon, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays: 3.12 ERA with 28/13 K/BB in 26 innings in the GCL, 16 hits. Nice to see K/IP and H/IP marks strong, walks are a bit high, OK for a debut out of high school and an underslot bonus.

153) Chuck Taylor, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: .239/.317/.294 with 18 walks, 48 strikeouts, 15-for-21 in steals in 180 at-bats. Fast, but lacks power and unlikely to develop much at 5-7, 180. Will need to improve on-base skills to have a chance.

154) Drew VerHagen, RHP, Detroit Tigers: 2.51 ERA with 18/13 K/BB, 20 hits allowed in 29 innings between GCL Tigers and Lakeland in the High-A Florida State League, 3.33 GO/AO. Vanderbilt product could move quickly if he can improve his command and keep the grounders, but lack of Ks is notable.

155) Tyler Wagner, RHP, Milwaukee Brewers: 5.72 ERA with 34/18 K/BB in 39 innings for Helena in the Pioneer League, 42 hits, 2.04 GO/AO. University of Utah product gets grounders, signed for underslot, good slider, but needs better command.

156) Alec Asher, RHP, Texas Rangers: 3.60 ERA with 41/8 K/BB in 30 innings for Spokane in the Northwest League, 28 hits. Signed for well under slot, with fine results so far, component ratios are quite good.

157) Corey Black, RHP, New York Yankees: 43 innings combined at three levels, with composite 3.80 ERA, 38/14 K/BB, 39 hits, 2.28 GO/AO and just one homer. Easy to overlook because his stats are spread out with three teams, but there are good markers here. Another underslot guy who has shown something nice.

158) Chris Serritella, 1B, Philadelphia Phillies: .299/.357/.461 with 21 walks, 44 strikeouts in 241 at-bats for Williamsport in the NY-P. Power the key attraction here and he's showing it, but there are some concerns about how it will play against more advanced pitching. Lacks tools otherwise.

As you can see, the fourth round is where teams started to get cute with the underslot picks to manipulate their bonus pools, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Lenin called them ?useless fools?. They were the gullible idiots of the left who supported Sovietism even after it descended into terror and the crushing of freedom.

Now Vladimir Putin has his own groupies in British politics but this time they are rightwing Tory MPs.

Last night at the Russian embassy under the benevolent eye of Putin?s agents in London the Conservative Friends of Russia was launched.

On its website are links to official Putin propaganda outlets defending the trial and prison sentence imposed on the Pussy Riot punk singers.

Sir Malcom Rifkind the former Tory foreign secretary, forever linked with Britain?s craven Balkans policy and the shame of Srebrenica, is honorary president.

As with William Hague?s shambolic handling of the Julian Assange asylum case, the launch of a pro-Putin Tory group at a time of growing disquiet over Russia?s abuse of human rights is a major foreign policy error of judgement

There is a functioning all-party parliamentary group on Russia but this bizarre effort to create a Tory pro-Putin group shows the kind of tin ear Tory foreign policy supremos have. Hague condemns Syria but is silent on Bahrain. He is tough on Burma, quiescent on China. British public opinion is outraged at the sentences at the Pussy Riot trial. The FCO continues to refuse to implement the terms of a House of Commons resolution on Sergei Magnitsky which was initiated by Tory MPs including Dominic Raab.

In 2008 Cameron said Tory MPs would quit the Russian group where they sit at the Council of Europe in protest at Putin?s invasion of Georgia which Putin has now admitted was planned two years previously. This has not happened. Tory MPs still sit with Putin stooges at the Council of Europe. Cameron refuses to raise publicly with Putin major human rights violations.

Friendship groups with Russia used to be a speciality of the left in the days of Stalinism. Now we have Putinism it is the Tory party that is creating a pro-Russian group of fellow travellers. It reflects the shambolic? incoherence of Tory networking in Europe and across the world.

Hard questions need to be asked about who finances and controls this group. Cameron would be well advised to disband it before it gets wider world attention. As in the US and Europe there is growing concern over the neo-authoritarianism of Putin. There is a lavish all-expenses-paid junket to Russia for Tory MPs planned for next month. Cameron should cancel it.

But for most Tories Putin is preferable to European centre-right parties. This bizarre episode in Tory party history is part of the desperate hunt by today?s Conservatives for links with any one, anywhere as long as it is not the European Union.

5 Mid-Year Tuneups for Your 401k

Focus on and take control of your retirementMost of us tend to put our retirement plans on automatic. It?s much easier to just have the money automatically taken out of your paycheck, and have it put into your 401k (hopefully with a match).

Just leaving your 401k on auto-pilot, though, can be problematic in the long term. While you don?t want to completely change your investing strategy without serious thought, you should assess your portfolio regularly to make sure things are on track for a successful retirement. Sometimes you need to tweak things a little bit.

Here are 5 mid-year tuneups for your 401k:

1. Review Your Fees

Your first step should be to review your fees. Over time, fees can really erode your wealth. Check into your options. If your employer?s plan allows you to choose from a variety of different investments, try to find something with lower fees. There are a number of low cost funds, and if your company doesn?t offer them as options, consider asking your plan administrator to add more investment choices.

2. Rollover Your 401k

Is your 401k still with your old employer? If so, you might want to do a transfer. Rollover your old 401k to your new employer so that it?s easier to manage. This is especially important if your new employer offers better options. While you?re at it, you can also consider rolling your 401k to an IRA.

3. Increase Your Contribution

Are you maxing out your retirement plan contribution? Go through your finances and figure out whether or not you can add more to your 401k. Depending on the options provided, you might be better off concentrating on your IRA first, but if there are solid options in the 401k, you can consider upping your contribution. At the very least increase your contribution so that you get the full match.

4. What about a Roth?

Not too long ago, Congress introduced the Roth option for the 401k. It has the same tax benefits that come with a Roth IRA, but without the income restrictions. Evaluate your situation, and find out if your company offers a Roth option for the 401k. If so, consider whether or not it makes sense for you to make use of a Roth. Your money grows tax-free, meaning that when you withdraw it, you don?t pay taxes on it. You pay taxes now, to avoid paying them later. If you think that your taxes are likely to be higher in the future, this can be a way to avoid the increase.

5. Rebalance Your Portfolio

Don?t forget to rebalance your portfolio. Investing and retirement experts point out that asset allocation is one of the most important points of a successful investment portfolio. Consider whether or not you need to make some adjustments to your portfolio in order to arrange a more favorable asset allocation.

You can also evaluate whether or not your portfolio is still helping you meet your retirement goals. If it?s not, tweak your portfolio so that it better reflects your efforts to secure financial freedom during your retirement.
